Four-star prep forward Tyler Cook is among the players who signed with Iowa and coach Fran McCaffery on Wednesday. Cook joins Iowa high school stars Ryan Kriener and Cordell Pemsl in the Hawkeyes latest class. Cook, who is 6-foot-8, is considered among the nation’s top power forwards. Kriener is a 6-foot-9 forward out of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Pemsl, from Dubuque Wahlert, is also a forward who should help Iowa compensate for losing the likes of Jarrod Uthoff and Adam Woodbury in the post following this season. The Hawkeyes open play Friday by hosting Gardner-Webb.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Two of the nation’s top junior college stars highlight the recruiting class signed by Iowa State coach Steve Prohm on Wednesday. Prohm signed four players; including junior college standouts Emmanuel Malou and Donovan Jackson.

Malou, a 6-foot-9 forward from Yuba College in California, was the nation’s second-best junior college player by recruiting service 247sports.com He averaged nearly 15 points and 8.5 rebounds last season and turned down Arizona and Kansas to play for Prohm. The Cyclones will likely need all four to contribute next season since they lose Georges Niang, Jameel McKay and possibly Monte Morris. No. 7 Iowa State faces Colorado Friday.

Cardinals’ Lance Lynn has Tommy John surgery

Sports

November 11th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn has had Tommy John surgery and will be sidelined all of next season. St. Louis said the 28-year-old Lynn had the surprise surgery Tuesday. The operation repaired a torn ulnar collateral ligament while having the ulnar nerve transposed and bone chips removed. The 28-year-old Lynn missed a couple of starts in June with a forearm strain.

Lynn’s health was not mentioned by the Cardinals at their season-ending news conference. Lynn was 12-11 with a 3.03 ERA last season. He was an All-Star in 2012 and has three straight seasons of 30 or more starts. He’s among 16 pitchers to work 175 or more innings each of the last four years. The loss of Lynn is the latest blow to the NL Central champion Cardinals pitching depth.

Talented youngster Carlos Martinez was shut down at the end of the season with a shoulder strain. John Lackey is a free agent and Adam Wainwright made only a handful of relief appearances at the end of the regular season and in the division series in his comeback from an Achilles injury. Top pitching prospect Alex Reyes was suspended Monday 50 games for testing positive for a drug of abuse.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Georges Niang has been named an Associated Press Preseason All-American, announced Monday by the organization. Also on the team are Kyle Wiltjer (Gonzaga), Buddy Hield (Oklahoma), Kris Dunn (Providence) and Ben Simmons (LSU).

The Cyclone forward is the school’s first preseason All-American since Jamaal Tinsley in 2000.

Niang, a Methuen, Massachusetts, native, earned a spot on the top team after averaging 15.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists last season. He was one of just two players in the nation 6-8 or taller to average at least 15.0 points and 3.0 assists in 2014-15.

Niang enters his final season as a Cyclone with 1,510 career points, which is fifth among active Division I players. Niang had 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in 23 minutes in Iowa State’s exhibition win against Grand Valley State. The Cyclones open the regular season Friday against Colorado in Sioux Falls, S.D.
