Chiefs place offensive lineman Grubbs on injured reserve

Sports

December 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have placed offensive guard Ben Grubbs on injured reserve with a neck injury and brought in back backup center Daniel Munyer to help with their ailing offensive line. The Chiefs announced the moves before Wednesday’s practice.

Grubbs, a two-time Pro Bowl selection with New Orleans, was acquired by Kansas City prior to this season. He started seven games before the neck problem cropped up, and the Chiefs were hopeful that he would be able to return to the field this season.

In other injury news, outside linebacker Justin Houston is day to day with a hyperextended left knee. Offensive lineman Jeff Allen has an ankle injury, while center Mitch Morse and wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas are undergoing concussion testing.

Royals acquire catcher Cruz from Cardinals for minor leaguer

Sports

December 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals have acquired backup catcher Tony Cruz from the St. Louis Cardinals for minor league infielder Jose Martinez while designating catcher Francisco Pena for assignment. The teams announced the trade Wednesday.

Cruz hit .204 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 9 games for the Cardinals. The 29-year-old, who can also play third base, could compete with Drew Butera for the backup catcher job behind Sal Perez. Butera is eligible for arbitration after arriving in Kansas City in a trade this past season. Cruz also is arbitration eligible.

The 19-year-old Martinez spent most of last season at rookie-level Burlington, hitting .243 with four doubles, a homer and 24 RBIs in 57 games.

ISU’s Campbell makes first 4 hires

Sports

December 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Matt Campbell’s first staff at Iowa State will apparently look a lot like his last one at Toledo. Campbell announced his first four hires Tuesday, and all four have connections to Campbell while with the Rockets.

Former Toledo assistant Tom Manning will be Iowa State’s offensive line coach. D.K. McDonald will work with the cornerbacks and John Kuceyeski will be Campbell’s director of scouting. Alex Golesh, who spent the last four seasons at Illinois, will be Campbell’s tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator.

Campbell, hired Sunday to replace Paul Rhoads, says he has a “pretty good idea” of who his coordinators will be but didn’t offer specifics.

Atlantic Boys open up season with emphatic win over Winterset

Sports

December 1st, 2015 by admin

The Atlantic Boys Basketball team got their 2015-16 season off to a great start on Tuesday night at the Atlantic High School with an 84-46 win over Winterset. The Trojans jumped out to a 30-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by 15 at halftime.

Head Coach Alan Jenkins thought his team played a great overall game but felt like their defensive effort wasn’t great in the first half with a lot of missed assignments. The Trojans responded to that challenge in a big way in the third quarter as they held Winterset to just 4 points in the quarter while stretching their lead to 38 points at 73-35.

Atlantic was led in the win by Ryan Hawkins and Garrett Franken with 24 points each. Two other players also finished in double figures as Austin Alexander had 12pts and Scott Leonard at 11pts. The Trojans dominated the rebounding effort throughout the game and shot 14-20 from the free throw line.

The Trojans now travel to Council Bluffs on Friday to take on Hawkeye 10 foe St. Albert.

Sports

December 1st, 2015 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Abdel Nader scored 21 points, Jameel McKay had 15 to go with a career-high 19 rebounds and fifth-ranked Iowa State beat North Dakota State 84-64 on Tuesday night

Monte Morris had 18 points and six assists for the Cyclones (6-0), who overcame a sluggish outing to post their fifth straight win by double digits.

The Bison made things tough on the Cyclones for about 30 minutes. But Iowa State’s 13-2 run midway through the second half ensured its 30th straight non-conference win at home.

A.J. Jacobson and Paul Miller each had 17 points to lead North Dakota State (4-2).

Oklahoma safely No. 3 in College Football Playoff rankings

Sports

December 1st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Oklahoma is No. 3 in the College Football Playoff selection committee rankings, putting the Sooners safely in position to be in the final four with their season completed. The Sooners locked up the Big 12 championship with a blowout victory at Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Clemson is still No. 1 and Alabama remained No. 2. Both the Tigers and Crimson Tide head into their conference championship games Saturday needing just a victory to lock up a playoff spot. The top seed gets to play closest to home, so for Clemson a semifinal game at the Orange Bowl in Miami is also on the line against North Carolina.

Iowa is No. 4 and Michigan State is No. 5, setting up a playoff play-in game in Saturday’s Big Ten title game.
