Iowa Scores 12 unanswered for win number 30

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University of Iowa baseball team spotted Michigan State a 2-0 lead before scoring 12 unanswered to post a 12-2 series-clinching victory on Saturday afternoon at McLane Baseball Stadium at Kobs Field.

The victory is the Hawkeyes’ 30th of the season, giving the program 30 or more wins in each of the seven “non-COVID” seasons under head coach Rick Heller.  It is Iowa’s fifth straight series victory (and seventh in eight weeks), moving the record to 30-16 overall, 14-6 in Big Ten play.

“It was great to get win No. 30, especially with all this team has gone through,” said Heller. “The injuries, fighting, scrapping, clawing with our early season schedule.  Getting to that number is great and even bigger yet, we’re still in the race.”

The Hawkeye bullpen was superb in the game, tossing 8 1/3 shutout innings.  Davitt, Ben Beutel and Cam Baumann scattered five hits, struck out five and issued two walks.  Beutel (3-0) earned the victory, while Baumann earned the three-inning save.

Iowa collected 12 hits in the game with Williams, Keaton Anthony and Hojnar tallying multi-hit games.  Williams was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and four runs scored, Anthony was 3-for-4 with his 20th double and Hojnar finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Atlantic Head Coach Kathy Hobson: “This was our first time playing in this tournament and on this course. Very flat, big greens and a lot of places to get into trouble. Pleased with our team score on this course.
This tournament was also an opportunity to see two of the teams that we will complete against at regionals. We know we need to show improvement if we are going to reach our ultimate goal of advancing to state. We have a challenge ahead of us but if we all play like we are capable of playing we have a good opportunity.”

GOP candidates in Iowa’s third district raise concerns about aid package for Ukraine

News

May 15th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The three Republican candidates running in the third congressional district primary are raising concerns about sending U.S. aid to Ukraine. During a debate this weekend on -C-C-I television in Des Moines, candidate Nicole Hasso of Johnston said America has always helped its allies, but the money would be better spent on fortifying the U.S.-Mexico border.

Gary Leffler of West Des Moines is also opposed to the 40 billion dollar package that passed the U.S. House last Tuesday.

Zach Nunn of Bondurant says House-passed bill lacks sufficient oversight, but he supports sending aid to Ukraine.

Congresswoman Cindy Axne, the Democrat from West Des Moines who will face one of these Republicans in the General Election, voted for the 40 billion in aid to Ukraine. The three Iowa Republicans who serve in the U.S. House voted for it, too. The U.S. Senate is set to vote on it in the next few days.

Nebraska teen dies from injuries in a Pott. County SUV-Semi TT collision

News

May 15th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Pottawattamie County) – A collision between an SUV and a semi Saturday evening south of Missouri Valley, claimed the life of a teenager from Omaha, Nebraska. The Iowa State Patrol reports the accident happened at around 5:50-p.m. in a construction zone on Interstate 29, between mile markers 70-75.

The 17-year-old male driver of a 2014 Subaru Forester died, when the vehicle crossed from the northbound lane into the southbound lane, and collided head-on with a 2016 International semi tractor-trailer. The accident happened while traffic was in a head-to-head area, with no separation between the lanes.

Following the collision, the Subaru became fully engulfed in flames when it came to rest on the traveled portion of the road. The semi left the road to the west and came to rest in the ditch. The driver of the semi, 39-year-old Robert D. Taylor, of Pensacola, FL, was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation.
