Iowa’s Gustafson earns BIG honor

Iowa center Megan Gustafson has been named the Big Ten Conference Freshman-of-the-Week. Gustafson averaged a double-double with 14 points and 10.7 rebounds per game to guide Iowa to a 2-1 record last week. She shot 56 percent from the field and averaged 3.3 blocks per contest in the three-game stretch.

Gustafson leads Big Ten freshmen with 50 blocks this season, which is the third-highest total among all freshmen in Iowa history. Iowa is 7-9 and visits Penn State on Wednesday night.

Paige, Phillip lead No. 14 WVU over No. 17 Iowa St. 97-87

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Jaysean Paige scored a career-high 34 points to lead No. 14 West Virginia to a 97-87 victory over No. 17 Iowa State on Monday night. The Mountaineers (21-7, 10-5 Big 12) avoided their first three-game losing streak in two years and swept the regular-season series from the Cyclones (19-9, 8-7).

Tarik Phillip added a career-high 22 points for West Virginia while Devin Williams had 13 points and nine rebounds. The Mountaineers let an 11-point first-half lead slip away early in the second half before Paige and Phillip carried them down the stretch.

Abdel Nader scored 23 points to lead six Iowa State players in double figures.

Hawkeyes fall to No. 8, Cyclones drop to No.17 in AP poll

Villanova remains No. 1 in The Associated Press college basketball poll, holding its comfortable lead over Kansas.

The Wildcats (24-3) received 45 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel on Monday for its third week on top of the poll. Kansas (23-4) was No. 1 on 20 ballots to hold second.

Villanova will have its toughest test yet as the top-ranked team when the Wildcats travel to No. 5 Xavier on Wednesday.

Oklahoma and Virginia are tied for third and are followed in the top 10 by Xavier, Michigan State, North Carolina, Iowa, Arizona and Maryland.

No. 21 Texas A&M and No. 22 Utah return to the rankings this week, replacing Dayton, which dropped out from 15th, and Providence, which was 23rd.

Boys Playoff Basketball tonight on KJAN

The Atlantic Boys Basketball team will begin playoff play tonight in Glenwood.  The Trojans will face the Winterset Huskies in a game that will tip off at 6:30pm.  That game will be followed by the other Class 3A District 16 Semifinal between Glenwood and Creston and 8:00pm.  Chris Parks and Seth Christensen will bring you coverage of both games tonight on KJAN AM 1220 and FM 101.1 as well as live audio at kjan.com and on the mobile app.

Atlantic gets a rematch of their first game of the season in which they beat Winterset 84-46.  The Trojans were led in that first meeting by Senior Ryan Hawkins and Junior Garrett Franken who both had 24 points in that first meeting.  Those two are also the leading scorers on the season for Atlantic, Hawkins with 22ppg and Franken with 17ppg.  Winterset is led by Sophomore Justin Henry who is averaging 14 points per game.

The second game of the night will be the third meeting of the season between Glenwood and Creston.  The Rams won both of the first two meetings 79-54 on December 4th and 86-72 on February 2nd.  The Rams are led by two Sophomores, Point Guard Nate Mohr who is averaging 18ppg and Forward Andrew Blum who is averaging 17 points per contest.  Creston has four players averaging in double figures on a very young squad. Freshman Kylan Smallwood has the highest average at 14ppg.

ISU’s Burton named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

The Big 12 Conference announced their weekly men’s basketball award winners on Monday. Iowa State Junior Guard Deonte Burton was named Newcomer of the Week for the second straight week after a career performance on Saturday against TCU.  Burton had a career best 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the Cyclones win over the Horned Frogs.  Burton has now been recognized by the conference 4 times this season.  The Cyclones play a Big Monday game at West Virginia tonight at 8:00pm.

Burton averaged a double-double for the Cyclones last week with 18.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. The junior guard connected on 56.0 percent (14-of-25) of his shots from the field and sank 88.9 percent (8-of-9) of the attempts from the free throw line. He ended the week by matching his career best with 23 points versus TCU while grabbing 14 boards. The rebounding total was eight more than his previous high. Burton also had 14 points and six rebounds in an overtime contest with Baylor. Since moving into the starting rotation, he is averaging 15.6 points and shooting 55.2 percent from the field.
