NASCAR driver Austin Dillon previews the Iowa Corn 350

Sports

June 12th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

NASCAR veteran Austin Dillon says Friday’s practice session will be crucial leading into Sunday night’s Iowa Corn 350. After crashing out early in last week’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 in Sonoma, California, Dillon’s car will be the first one to make a qualifying run Saturday afternoon at the Iowa Speedway.

Cup Series cars will have 50 minutes of practice time on Friday afternoon and based on that will set the car up for a qualifying run.

The 2018 Daytona 500 champ has had a lot of success at the Iowa Speedway over the years. He won a truck race in 2010 and finished second a year later. He also has three top five finishes in six Xfinity Series starts.

Dillon says he was excited to see the Iowa Speedway added to the Cup Series schedule.

It will be the first Cup Series race at the Iowa Speedway but Dillon is one of 19 drivers expected to be in the field who have won a race at the track.

The first of three days of action on Friday is capped off by an ARCA/Menard Series race.

Former Iowa State All-American prepares for his third season in the NFL

Sports

June 12th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Former Iowa State All-American Breece Hall hopes to become one of the top running backs in the NFL as he prepares for his third season in the NFL with the New York Jets. Hall suffered a season ending ACL injury as a rookie in 2022 and last season finished with nearly 16-hundred yards of rushing and receiving. He averaged 119 yards or rushing and scored four touchdowns in the final three games of the season.

With quarterback Aaron Rodgers coming back from injury and an upgraded offensive line Hall feels the offense has the weapons needed for him to become one of the top running backs in the league.

Hall had 76 receptions last season but feels he can be even a bigger receiving threat out of the backfield.

Rodgers was a no-show at Jet’s mini-camp this week.

NASCAR champ hosts Iowa fundraiser to honor his late grandfather

News, Sports

June 12th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The champion of last year’s NASCAR Cup Series will be in Iowa for Sunday’s race at the Iowa Speedway, but also to raise money for the Iowa chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association on Saturday night. Ryan Blaney (BLAY-nee), who drives the number-12 Mustang, will host “Dinner with the Champions” at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum in Knoxville. Association spokeswoman Lauren Livingston says Blaney is bringing his dad and his uncle, both of whom were top drivers as well.

Established in 2018, the Ryan Blaney Family Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to supporting brain health causes, with a focus on Alzheimer’s disease and concussion — so she says donations for the event are tax deductible.

The Blaney Family has many ties to not only dirt racing, but to Knoxville and Iowa. Ryan Blaney’s mother, Lisa, is a Chariton native, and Ryan’s father, Dave, won the Knoxville Nationals in 1997. Ryan’s uncle, Dale, competed in the Knoxville Nationals several times, and his grandfather, Lou, finished 4th in the Knoxville Nationals in 1974. Speaking of Lou, Livingston says the Blaney family has a personal connection to Alzheimer’s.

Those resources include the Alzheimer’s Association’s free 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900. Some seven-million Americans have Alzheimer’s dementia, including more than 62-thousand Iowans, while nearly 100-thousand Iowans provide unpaid care to loved ones living with the disease.

Lady Vikes Softball complete comeback against Riverside

Sports

June 11th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The AHSTW Lady Vikes softball team had a well-earned 7-4 victory against the Riverside Bulldogs on Tuesday night. Tuesday’s matchup started as a stalemate as neither team was able to get past second through 2 innings of softball. Then in the top of the third Riverside had 3 straight hits and a 2 RBI Double from Kayden Schnack who went 1-4 on the night to take a 3-0 lead. Madison Kelley would tack on one more run with an RBI grounder towards third base to make the game 4-0. AHSTW would respond in the bottom of the third with an RBI triple from Bella Lamp chipping into the lead at 4-1.

The bottom of the fourth is when things turned around for the Lady Vikes thanks to an Addison Carroll sacrifice fly making the game 4-2 and a go ahead 3 RBI homer off of Kendra Hansen’s bat with AHSTW taking the lead at 5-4. Hansen would go 1-3 on the night with 4 RBI’s. The Bulldogs would manage to load the bases up in the top of the sixth with only out to try their turn at a comeback, but the Lady Vikes Etta Partlow stayed calm and retired the next two batters leaving three runners stranded. AHSTW scored two more runs in the bottom of the 6th making the game 7-4 and Riverside had no answer in the top of the 7th.  Etta Parlow secured the win pitching 7 innings, having 3 earned runs, 8 hits, 7 strikeouts, and 4 walks.

Lady Vikes Head Coach Kathleen Pace message to her players after the win was to carry this positive energy into the rest of the week.

The sharp pitching from Partlow caught coach Pace’s eye and she gave credit to her starting pitcher.

The win improves AHSTW to 7-7 on the year as they head to Treynor on Thursday. Coach Pace would like to see continual improvement throughout the year.

The Riverside Bulldogs now sit at 8-8 with the loss and will host Tri-Center on Thursday at home.
