JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – Mike Fiers worked three perfect innings for a Houston Astros split squad in a 4-3 loss to a St. Louis Cardinals split squad on Saturday.

Non-roster invitee Danny Worth homered and had an RBI double off Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright in his first two trips to the plate. They were his first two RBIs of the spring.

They accounted for both runs off Wainwright, who worked four innings and gave up four hits.

Fiers struck out four and has thrown five scoreless innings in two outings. Astros starters have a 1.73 ERA this spring.

Tommy Pham homered in the ninth to tie it and St. Louis scored the winning run on a throwing error with the bases loaded, with pinch hitter Harrison Bader getting the RBI.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Jesse Jansma scored 15 points and Hull Western Christian gave outgoing coach Jim Eekhoff a record eighth state championship Friday night, beating Cascade 42-35 for the Class 2A title.

Eekhoff prevailed in a matchup with veteran Cascade coach Al Marshall, who also is retiring. It was the first time in a 47-year career that Marshall had a team in the state championship game.

Jansma hit a 3-pointer and scored on a drive late in the first half to put Western Christian (25-2) ahead to stay. The Wolfpack eventually built their lead to nine points, which proved to be enough to hold of Cascade (22-4).

Josh VanLingen added 10 points and nine rebounds for Western Christian and Dustin Marra grabbed 10 rebounds. Cascade’s Devin Green led the Cougars with 17 points.

Girls bowling team notices scoring error, gives up 3rd place trophy

A scoring mistake turned into a superb display of sportsmanship this week in Iowa. At last month’s girls state bowling tournament in Des Moines, Charles City took home the third place trophy in class 1A. But, team members later discovered a 10 pin error in their scoring. Jason Eslinger, with the Iowa Girl’s High School Athletic Union, is praising the Charles City girls for reporting the mistake, which resulted in the third place trophy going to Le Mars.

“The (Charles City) team wanted the right team to have the trophy and not only that, but they wanted to deliver the trophy to Le Mars in person. It was just a tremendous amount of sportsmanship on their part,” Eslinger said. The two bowling teams met on Tuesday in Humboldt to make the trophy exchange. That’s where the Le Mars girls turned the feel good story up a notch further.

“They actually made fourth place medals to give to the Charles City team,” Eslinger said. “The ribbons were made with the Charles City school colors.” The two teams had lunch together in Humboldt and the Girls Athletic Union picked up the bill.

Molina in lineup for second time this spring training

Sports

March 11th, 2016 by admin

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Yadier Molina was in the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting lineup for the second time this spring training but again is unlikely to hit.

Molina was batting ninth against the Atlanta Braves on Friday. As in his 2016 debut Wednesday, he probably will play a couple of innings and come out of the game when it is his turn to bat.

Manager Mike Matheny said Molina took batting practice from a machine for the first time Friday, but Molina has not yet hit against a pitcher. Matheny said Molina’s left thumb, operated on twice during the offseason, was not an issue when he made a sweeping tag to save a run on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old Molina expects to be ready for opening day.

Autopsy reveals Spencer wrestler, 18, died of heart defect

News, Sports

March 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SPENCER, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa medical examiner’s office has concluded that the death of a Spencer High School wrestler who collapsed at a December match was likely caused by a congenital heart defect. The Sioux City Journal reports an autopsy on 18-year-old Austin Roberts’ body Dec. 22 determined the cause of death. The medical examiner’s office also listed “probable dehydration” and “other significance” in his death. The manner of his death will be certified as natural causes.

Roberts, at 220 pounds, collapsed at a tournament Dec. 19 in Spencer after taking injury time when he couldn’t catch his breath. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital later that day. He was ranked sixth in the state in Class 3A at the time of his death.
