JOAN H. REED, 93, of Atlantic, died Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the Heritage House in Atlantic. A private graveside service for JOAN REED will be held at the Atlantic Cemetery. The staff of Schmidt Family Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for the Reed family.

Joan Reed is survived by:

Her daughter – Susan (Dan) Norman,

Her son – Kelly (Rondelle) Reed

10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and her daughter in law, Janet Reed..

Fourth Annual Youth Fishing Derby Results!

(Lewis, Iowa) – The Cass County Conservation Board held a youth fishing derby at Cold Springs Park on June 11th 2022. Prizes were awarded for the most overall weight: 1st Dayton Thomas ( 2nd from Right) , 2nd : Ethan Scoles( left), 3rd : Addyson Freerksen (Right). Awards also given for heaviest single fish and longest single fish: Ethan Scoles ( left) , and shortest single fish: Chloe Pendergast (2nd from Left).

MICHAEL DARLING, 75, of Greenfield, died Thursday, June 9, 2022, at his home in Greenfield.  A Celebration of Life service for MICHAEL DARLING will be held 2-p.m. Friday, June 17th, at the Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield.

The family will greet friends on Friday, June 17, 2022, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield ;Online condolences may be left to the family at www.lambfuneralhomes.com.

Burial is in the Victoria Township Cemetery, south of Massena.  Full Military Graveside Honors will be conducted by the Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post No. 265 and V.F.W. Post No. 5357.  

Memorials:  To the Michael Darling Memorial Fund to be established by the family at a later date.

His son – Greg Darling, of Omaha.

His daughters – Laura (Auby) Ninemire, of Pella, and Kathleen (Aaron) Short, of Des Moines.

His brother Chris (Sandy) Darling, of Urbandale.

Former Wheeler championship coach Howell passes away

Former Audubon state championship coach Frank Howell has passed away at the age of 52.

Howell had a long career coaching girls basketball at both the high school and collegiate level. He led Audubon to a state championship in 1999.

Howell had stops at Cedar Rapids Washington, Audubon, Dallas Center-Grimes, Central Decatur, and Graceland University. His teams made 8 state tournament appearances and he led his teams to over 350 wins.

Services for Coach Howell are pending.

Red Oak man arrested on OWI charge

Red Oak Police report an early morning arrest on Saturday. At 1:38 a.m. Officers arrested 27-year-old Trevor Allen Johnson of Red Oak following a traffic stop at the intersection of G Avenue and 200th Street on the charge of Operating While Intoxicated 1st Offense. Johnson was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $1,000 bond.

Former West Harrison School Teacher Arrested for Inappropriate Contact With Students

LOGAN, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Public Safety, Friday, said that on April 22, 2022, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible inappropriate relationship between former West Harrison School Teacher Benjamin J. Work and a minor student.  The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, along with agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, initiated an investigation into the allegation.  Mr. Work was placed on administrative leave by the West Harrison School District on April 22, 2022.

During the investigation, law enforcement identified six minor students that Mr. Work had reportedly had inappropriate contact with between the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022. On June 3, 2022, Mr. Work resigned from the West Harrison Community School District.

On June 10, 2022, Benjamin Work was arrested at his residence without incident.  He was transported and booked into the Harrison County Correctional Facility.  Work has been charged with five counts of Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee (Class D Felony), five counts of Lascivious Conduct with a Minor (Serious Misdemeanor) and two counts of Indecent Contact with a Child (Aggravated Misdemeanor).

Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation and defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
