Purdy Named Big 12 Sportsmanship Award Winner

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s Brock Purdy has been named a recipient of the 2021-22 Big 12 Sportsmanship Award, the Conference announced Tuesday. Purdy won the award along with Anna Dong (Texas Tech women’s golf).

The awards, previously called the Sportsperson of the Year, began in 2000-01 to annually recognize student-athletes who displayed an extraordinary degree of sportsmanship, community service and academic achievement. This year’s winners were selected by a 10-person media panel.

Purdy was the Iowa State football team’s advocate for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, presenting to groups, leading bible studies and taking speaking engagements, with little notoriety for his contributions. He was involved in events such as Night to Shine, a special-needs prom, Iowa State’s Victory Day, an event for individuals with disabilities to compete in drills at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium, and the Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids. He visited with students at local high schools, both as a keynote speaker for Fields of Faith and with regular in-person and zoom visits.

Purdy was a two-time CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-America selection and three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree. The Gilbert, Arizona, native graduated cum laude with a degree in communications studies.

He was ISU’s starting quarterback for 46 consecutive games, and finished his career with 32 Iowa State records. After the season, he was selected in the NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

Purdy is the third Iowa State student-athlete to earn the honor, following wrestler Cael Sanderson (2001-02) and football player David Montgomery (2018-19).

Schools had the opportunity to nominate for the Big 12 Male and Female Sportsmanship Award. Ruby Chou of the Iowa State women’s golf team was also nominated. Chou, a sophomore from Taipei, Taiwan, volunteers heavily with the Rosedale Shelter through her degree program of criminal justice.

Hawkeyes Announce Football Schedule Updates

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa announced on Tuesday updates to future football nonconference schedules.

It was previously announced that Iowa would host Northern Illinois in 2025, but that game has been moved to Sept. 5, 2026. Joining the Huskies on Iowa’s 2026 nonconference slate will be Northern Iowa on Sept. 19 in Kinnick Stadium.

In 2027, the Hawkeyes will host Ball State on Sept. 4 in Iowa City.

Iowa and Northern Illinois will also play on Sept. 15, 2029 in Iowa City, a game that was previously scheduled for 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Big Ten schedules for each season will be released at a later date.

Moss Named Walter Camp Preseason All-American

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Senior Riley Moss has earned Walter Camp Preseason Second-Team All-America honors, it was announced Tuesday by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Moss, a defensive back from Ankeny, Iowa, has also earned preseason All-America honors from Phil Steele and he is a preseason All-Big Ten selection by Phil Steele and Athlon Sports. He was also named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List.

During the 2021 season, Moss was a first-team All-America selection by Sporting News and he was voted the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year. Moss was a first-team All-Big Ten selection by both league coaches and media and was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. He also earned Iowa’s Team Hustle Award.

Moss is second in school history in career interception return yards (239) and he is one of three players in program history with three interception return touchdowns. In 41 career games, Moss has 111 tackles (92 solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, 10 interceptions and 25 pass breakups.

Bateman Steps into Cass County Youth and 4-H Role: Alumni brings experience and enthusiasm to local program

(Atlantic, Iowa) – Cass County Extension Director Kate Olson reports Katie Bateman is the new, Youth Programs Coordinator at the Cass County Extension Office. Olson says Bateman is no stranger to the 4-H program, and that knowledge will serve her well in the role she began in Mid-May. She’s has jumped right in to working with youth, parents, volunteers, and partners across the county, Olson says. The Youth Program Coordinator role is a full-time position, with responsibility for youth outreach programming and 4-H program management in Cass County. Katie’s first month on the job has been a flurry of activity with livestock weigh-in and entries, county fair preparation and summer daycamps and programming.

Katie is a graduate of Atlantic High School and was active in the Cass County 4-H program throughout her early years, serving in leadership roles at the club and county level. She remained involved in college, interning for several years at the Cass County extension office during the summer and helping form a collegiate 4-H club at the University of Northern Iowa, where she graduated with a degree in Leisure Youth and Human Services. Following graduation, she worked as a CYC in the Story County extension office for two years, in addition to other work experience with youth organizations and senior living communities around Iowa. She has also stayed involved as a volunteer in 4-H programs as she has moved across the state. Katie is excited to get back involved with the Cass County 4-H program to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

2 arrests in Harlan late last week

The Harlan Police Department says two people were arrested on separate charges late last week. On Saturday, 52-year-old Anthony Elwood Rikle, of Harlan, was arrested for Domestic Abuse Assault. And, on June 23rd, 19-year-old Morgan Ann Schwery, of Harlan, was arrested for Possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and prohibited acts.

And, no injuries were reported following a property damage accident in Harlan Monday. Harlan Police say a 2006 Peterbilt semi driven by Jeremiah Sunderman, of Clarinda, was turning south onto Highway 59 from the 2300 block of 23rd Street, when the semi’s trailer hit a stop sign, causing minor damage to the sign.
