IOWA CITY, Iowa — ESPN Events announced on Thursday the matchups for the 2022 Jimmy V Men’s Classic. The men’s college basketball doubleheader at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, Dec. 6 will feature the University of Iowa versus Duke and Texas versus Illinois.

Both games will air on ESPN, with times to be announced at a later date.

All four men’s programs advanced to the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Defending Big Ten Tournament champion Iowa is making its Jimmy V debut. Duke is undefeated in three previous Jimmy V appearances (1998, 2000, 2016). This will also be the fourth Jimmy V appearance for both Illinois (2003, 2014, 2020) and Texas (2003, 2008, 2012).

The Jimmy V Classic, named for legendary college basketball coach Jim Valvano, annually raises money and awareness for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The men’s classic began in 1995 and is in its 28th year — 19th at Madison Square Garden. The doubleheader is part of ESPN’s V Week initiative, which utilizes platforms to talk to sports fans about the importance of cancer research. To date, ESPN has helped raise more than $155 million dollars for the V Foundation. In 2021, V Week raised $13.35 million, surpassing the previous high of $8.8 million in 2019.

This will be Iowa’s fifth trip to Madison Square Garden under head coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes advanced to the NIT Championship in 2013, participated in the 2K Classic in 2014 and 2018 (champions), and competed in the 2018 Big Ten Tournament.

Tickets for the doubleheader will go on sale this fall. First priority and access to the best seats will be offered to fans who sign up for the pre-sale through Fevo.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa seniors Jack Campbell (linebacker) and Riley Moss (defensive back) were named first-team selections on the Athlon Sports preseason All-America teams announced Monday. Junior Tory Taylor (punter) was a second-team selection and senior Sam LaPorta (tight end) was a fourth-team selection.  

Campbell (6-foot-5, 243-pounds) was a second-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and Phil Steele in 2021. In addition, he earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and was second in the Big Ten with 143 tackles – the fifth-most ever in a single season at Iowa. He earned Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors following a career-best performance with 18 tackles in Iowa’s 24-14 win over Colorado State. A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Campbell was the recipient of Iowa’s Roy Carver Most Valuable Player (Defense) award last season and served as a permanent team captain. He has also been named to the Athlon Sports 2022 preseason All-Big Ten First Team, and first-team on Phil Steele’s preseason All-America team.  

Moss (6-1, 194) was a first-team All-America selection by Sporting News a season ago and was voted the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year. Additionally, Moss was a first-team All-Big Ten selection by both league coaches and media and was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. The Ankeny, Iowa, native was a recipient of Iowa’s Team Hustle Award and is second all-time at Iowa in career interception return yards (239). Moss is one of three players in program history with three interception return touchdowns. He has been named to the Athlon Sports 2022 preseason All-Big Ten First Team, and the Phil Steele’s preseason All-America First Team.  

Taylor (6-4, 231) handled all of Iowa’s punting duties in 2021, averaging 46.1 yards on 80 punts – 39 of which were downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. He was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award and appeared on the weekly Ray’s 8 list three times throughout the season. The Melbourne, Australia, native was named Big Ten Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against Iowa State and was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by league coaches and media a season ago. 

LaPorta (6-4, 249) was voted second-team All-Big Ten by Phil Steele and third-team by league coaches in 2021. The Highland, Illinois, native was named to the Mackey Award Preseason Watch List last season. As a junior LaPorta led the Hawkeyes in catches and yards, hauling in 53 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns. The Hawkeye tight end has been named to the Athlon Sports 2022 preseason All-Big Ten First Team, and third-team on Phil Steele’s preseason All-America team. 

The Hawkeyes open the season with three straight nonconference home games, each featuring a different start time. The season-opener Sept. 3 against South Dakota State is slated for an 11 a.m. (CT) kickoff on FS1. The annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game against Iowa State will follow on Sept. 10, with a 3 p.m. start time on BTN. Iowa’s final nonconference contest is an evening contest against Nevada beginning at 6:30 p.m. and being televised on BTN.

IOWA CITY, Iowa —University of Iowa Moon Family head football coach Kirk Ferentz is one 20 head coaches named to the 2022 Dodd Trophy Preseason Watch List. The announcement was made Tuesday by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc.

The Dodd Trophy, college football’s most coveted national coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity, the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd’s coaching philosophy.

The watch list was created through a selection process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc., taking into consideration each program’s graduation rate, commitment to service and charity in the community, projected success for the 2022 season and Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Ferentz is heading into his 24th season as Iowa’s head coach, the longest tenured head coach in college football. He became Iowa’s winningest head coach on Sept. 1, 2018 and earned Big Ten win No. 100 with a 41-21 victory at Penn State in 2020.

Ferentz has led the Hawkeyes to a 178-110 overall record, including a 110-79 Big Ten Conference record. Ferentz ranks fourth all-time in the Big Ten Conference for both league wins and total wins. Iowa posted a 10-4 mark in 2021, winning the Big Ten’s West Division.

Ferentz has led the Hawkeyes to 12 January bowl game appearances and 19 bowl invitations. Iowa has won 10 or more games seven times under his direction and has been ranked in the final Top 25 rankings in each of the last four seasons.

Ferentz was named the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year in 2015. He has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year four times (2002, 2004, 2009, 2015) and was named the Woody Hayes and Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year in 2015 as well.

The 19 coaches joining Ferentz on the preseason list represent Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, BYU, Cincinnati, Clemson, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M, Utah, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — sophomore Patrick McCaffery (men’s basketball) and sophomore Bailey Ortega (volleyball) have been selected as Iowa’s 2022 Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners. The duo was chosen from Iowa’s list of 2021-22 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winners, which had a representative from each varsity sport.

McCaffery started 32 games on the nationally ranked and Big Ten Tournament championship men’s basketball squad. He ranked third on the team in points (10.5) and free throws made (1.7) per game, fourth in rebounds (3.6), 3-pointers made (1.03) and blocks (0.5) per game, and second in field goals made (3.9) and attempted (9.2) per contest. McCaffery was the co-recipient of the team’s Kenny Arnold Hawkeye Spirit Award following the season, which is presented to the Hawkeye(s) who exemplifies Arnold’s spirit of leadership, character, courage, determination and poise, and inspires teammates to be their very best. The small forward posted single season bests in every statistical category. He reached double figures 21 times in 2022, including leading the team in scoring (18) and 3-pointers made (4) in Iowa’s NCAA Tournament game versus Richmond (18).

Ortega started 27 of the 30 games for Iowa and saw action in all 107 sets for the Hawkeyes. She led the team in assists (838) and assists per set (7.83). She ranked third on the team in serving percentage (.918). She recorded double digit assists in all but one contest, amassing at least 40 assists six times. Ortega recorded a career high 57 assists against Air Force on September 17, the first Hawkeye to record 50 or more assists since 2019. She was named to the Academic All-Big Ten and the Fall Dean’s List. ​Ortega is ranked 10th at Iowa in all-time assists with 1225.

The Big Ten first awarded the Outstanding Sportsmanship honor in 2003. The student-athletes chosen were individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, were in good academic standing, and demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team will host NC State on Thursday, Dec. 1, as part of the 2022 ACC/Big Ten Women’s Basketball Challenge. The Hawkeyes and Wolfpack won their respective conference’s regular season and postseason tournament titles last season.

This will mark the first meeting between the two programs in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and will be the Wolfpack’s first visit to Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The two teams have met three previous times, all on neutral floors, including twice in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes cruised to a 79-61 victory in the 2019 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in Greensboro, North Carolina, and won, 56-50, in the 1997 NCAA Tournament First Round in Storrs, Connecticut. NC State edged Iowa in overtime, 69-66, in the first round of the Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Classic in Los Angeles in 2002.

Iowa won both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, totaling 24 wins and ascending as high as No. 8 in the national rankings a season ago. The Hawkeyes return all five starters, including All-Americans Caitlin Clark and Monika Czinano. Clark, who was honored as the Big Ten Player of the Year and a Naismith and Wooden Award finalist in 2021, averaged an NCAA best in points per game (27.0), assists per game (8.0), triple-doubles (5), free throws made (200) and 30-point games (11). In addition to earning honorable mention All-America accolades, Czinano was first-team all-conference and Lisa Leslie Center of the Year Semifinalist. The fifth-year senior led the nation in field-goal percentage (67.9) and ranked sixth in field-goals made (277), 11th in total points (656) and 12th in points per game (21.2).

NC State captured both the ACC regular season and tournament championships, finishing with 32 victories and making the program’s first Elite Eight appearance since 1998. The Wolfpack return two of their top two scorers from a year ago: Diamond Johnson (10.8 ppg) and Jakia Brown-Turner (9.8 ppg). Head coach Wes Brown has served as head coach the past nine seasons, leading the Wolfpack to three consecutive ACC Tournament titles (2020, 2021, 2022).

The Big Ten and ACC offices collaborate to determine challenge matchups each season. The Big Ten and ACC have been among the most competitive conferences on the national women’s basketball landscape for several years, with the two conferences sending 14 schools to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

The ACC won the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Challenge, 10-4. The Hawkeyes lost last season’s Challenge contest at Duke, but won their last Challenge home game, beating Clemson in 2019.
