SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Wesley Bryan took the lead in the rain-delayed John Deere Classic on Friday, five days after earning a PGA Tour card with his third Web.com Tour victory of the year. Bryan played 26 holes in 10 under Friday at TPC Deere Run, birdieing three of the final holes to finish off a first-round 66 and shooting a 64 in the second to reach 12-under 130.
Area favorite Zach Johnson faced a long day Saturday after not even getting onto the course Friday. Play resumed five hours late at noon after nearly 2.4 inches of rain overnight — on top of the inch Thursday morning and afternoon that delayed play 3 1/2 hours. Because of the wet conditions, the players were allowed use preferred lies in the fairways in the second round.
Bryan has made a fast rise since focusing on tournament golf last year after working as a trick-shot artist. The 26-year-old former South Carolina player dominated the Web.com Tour this season, winning in Louisiana, Mexico and Kansas and earning $449,392 in 13 starts.
Steve Marino was a stroke back after rounds of 66 and 65. Johnson opened with a 65 on Thursday. The 2012 tournament winner is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
CHICAGO (AP) — St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday will have his broken right thumb re-examined early next week, then he and the Cardinals will decide on treatments including surgery or letting the injury heal on its own, according to GM John Mozeliak. Holliday, who saw the team’s hand specialist in Chicago on Friday morning, is out indefinitely after getting hit by a pitch in the Cardinals’ 4-3, 11-inning loss to the Cubs on Thursday night. Neither Mozeliak or manager Mike Matheny could offer a specific timetable for the slugger’s return.
“I haven’t talked to him,” Matheny said. “What I did hear kind of confirmed what they saw yesterday. Now I’ve got to figure out how to move forward.” Cubs reliever Mike Montgomery plunked Holliday, a seven-time All-Star, with a 94 mph fastball on a 1-1 count with two outs and nobody on in the 10th on Thursday night. An X-ray showed the break.
The 36-year-old Holliday was in the clubhouse before Friday’s game against the Cubs and was joking with teammates, even though his right hand was wrapped.
CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Szczur hit two home runs and the Chicago Cubs won their 11th straight game, backing Jake Arrieta and battering Adam Wainwright to rout the St. Louis Cardinals 13-2 Friday. Willson Contreras launched a three-run shot to cap a five-run second inning, and Javier Baez and Jorge Soler also went deep to make things easy for Arrieta (14-5).
The Cubs’ winning streak is their longest since a 12-game run in 2001. They pulled 14 games ahead of scuffling St. Louis in the NL Central and improved the best record in the majors to 73-41. Szczur, who recorded his first multihomer game, and Kris Bryant each had three hits. The Cubs roughed up Wainwright (9-7) for seven runs and chased him after two innings, tying his shortest outing in 245 career starts.
Arrieta pitched one-run ball into the sixth inning and gave up four hits overall. Stephen Piscotty and Jedd Gyorko homered for the Cardinals, who remain in a tight race for the second NL wild card despite dropping six of their last nine.

Despite storms that rumbled through the area causing power outages and some tree damage, the Atlantic Golf & Country Club is in good shape this morning and the 58th Annual Tournament of Champions will begin as scheduled. Tournament chairman Matt Mullenix said this morning that there was no damage to the course and players will tee off as scheduled. The first group will begin their round at 8:30 am.
CHICAGO (AP) — Anthony Rizzo drew a bases-loaded walk from Zach Duke with two outs in the 11th inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Thursday night for their 10th consecutive win. Pinch-hitters Willson Contreras and Jorge Soler led off with singles against the lefty Duke (2-1) and Dexter Fowler walked to load the bases with one out. Kris Bryant struck out before Rizzo took a 3-1 pitch inside to give the Cubs their longest winning streak since getting 12 straight in 2001.
Mike Montgomery (4-5) allowed a single and two walks to load the bases in the 11th before striking out Matt Carpenter to end the threat. He won his first game for Chicago since being acquired from Seattle last month. The Cardinals fell 13 games behind Chicago in the NL Central and lost Matt Holliday in the 10th after he was hit on the right hand by Mike Montgomery’s 94 mph fastball.
Matt Holliday suffered a broken right thumb during the incident. He declined to speculate afterward on whether or not his season was over. Holliday, who left for a pinch-runner after being checked by the trainer, had singled and scored in the first inning. He’s hitting .242 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs. Holliday was to see a hand specialist today (Friday) and then return to St. Louis.

The 58th Annual Tournament of Champions is set to begin Friday at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club and KJAN will have live coverage throughout the weekend. The tournament features the top finishers from club championships around the state along with past champions and last year’s top-25 finishers. The event is a three-day 54 hole tournament played Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and is split into three different divisions: Open, Senior, and Super Senior.
Tournament Chair Matt Mullenix was featured on our Heartbeat Today Program on Thursday morning and he said 96 total golfers have signed up for play in this year’s event. He said it’s nice to see some familiar faces but great to see new participants as well and he anticipates around 30 new golfers in this year’s field. Mullenix also said 12 past champions will be back to compete this year.
