Cardinals, Matheny agree to 3-year contract extension

Sports

November 4th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, whose team missed the playoffs in 2016 for the first time in his five-year tenure, has agreed to a three-year contract extension. The Cardinals announced the new contract Thursday, a day after the rival Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Terms were not disclosed.

Matheny is 46. The Cardinals have averaged 92 wins per season since he took over after Tony La Russa retired following the World Series-winning 2011 season. Overall, Matheny is 461-349.

The former Gold Glove catcher led the Cardinals to playoff appearances in 2012 through 2015 before falling one game short this season, including NL Central titles in 2013-2015. He also led St. Louis to the 2013 World Series, losing in six games to Boston.

Baker Mayfield, No. 12 Sooners hold off Iowa State 34-24

Sports

November 4th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Baker Mayfield threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns and 12th-ranked Oklahoma held off Iowa State 34-24 on Thursday night for its sixth straight victory. Dede Westbrook caught seven passes for 131 yards and a score for the Sooners (7-2, 6-0 Big 12). They beat the Cyclones (1-8, 0-6) for the 18th time in a row and the 74th time in 81 meetings.

Mayfield threw TD passes to Westbrook and Dimitri Flowers in the final 4:16 of the first half, extending his streak of games with at least four touchdown tosses to an FBS-high four games. Mayfield has 31 scoring passes, good for second nationally, with just six interceptions.

Oklahoma’s defense stiffened after some early struggles, allowing just seven points in the second half. Jacob Park passed for 160 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones. They’ve dropped five straight. Iowa State played without rushing leader Mike Warren. He sprained an ankle last week in a loss to Kansas State.

Iowa State next travels to face Kansas in the least appealing matchups in the Big 12 this year. The Jayhawks are 1-7 and have lost their last three games by an average of 40 points

Spartans will try to turn the tables on Fremont-Mills

Sports

November 3rd, 2016 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans were able to avenge one regular season loss in the first round of the 8-Man Football Playoffs and they are aiming to do it again in the Quarterfinals.  Exira-EHK ran past Bedford in the first round last week 56-12, avenging a 40-6 loss in week 2 of the season.  Now the Spartans have the tall task of trying to repeat that feat with a meeting against the undefeated Fremont-Mills Knights, a team they lost two on October 7th 50-21.  Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen knows it will be a tough task to turn the tables on the Knights from the first meeting but his team is excited for the opportunity.

Big plays were the major difference in the first meeting between the two teams. Knights Quarterback Mason Vanatta had a big game throwing for 241 yards and 4 touchdowns while also carrying the ball 4 times for 89 yards and a score.  Coach Petersen knows the Spartans will have to prevent the big play in order to have success this time.

The Spartans have gotten great play down the stretch from a number of players and a couple that stand out are Quarterback Connor Westergaard and Fullback Cole Madsen.  Westergaard has settled in nicely to the Spartans offense rushing for 694 yards and 16 touchdowns while throwing for 585 yards and 9 scores.  Westergaard is averaging a whopping 10.8 yards per carry and a big reason for that is Cole Madsen.  Coach Petersen has repeatedly said Madsen is their most improved player and is doing a great job blocking.  He also made some great plays on defense in the round 1 win over Bedford including two tackles for loss.  Fremont-Mills Head Coach Jeremy Christiansen knows slowing down the Spartans backfield is a strong challenge.

The Knights seem to rise to the occasion every time they are challenged and Coach Christensen knows this will be another tough challenge. He said winning the line of scrimmage is where success starts against a physical team like the Spartans.

We’ll have coverage of the Spartans and Knights for you on KJAN. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call from Tabor with Pre-Game at 6:00pm and Kickoff at 7:00pm. Tune in on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, and on the KJAN mobile app.

Cardinals sign Mike Matheny to three-year extension

Sports

November 3rd, 2016 by admin

ST. LOUIS, Mo., November 3, 2016 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed Manager Mike Matheny to a three-year extension through the 2020 season.

Matheny, 46, has led the Cardinals to a 461-349 record over his five seasons as manager, averaging 92 wins per season, the most wins among all Major League managers since 2012.  The Cardinals won three consecutive National League Central Division titles (2013-15), a National League Championship in 2013 and made the postseason in four of Matheny’s first five seasons.  Matheny’s .569 winning percentage currently ranks 18th all-time in the history of Major League Baseball managers and he stands 5th on the Cardinals all-time managerial wins list.

“Mike has continued the Cardinals tradition of winning in his first five years as manager and we are happy to extend his contract leading our club on the field through 2020,” said Cardinals Principal Owner and CEO, Bill DeWitt, Jr.

The Cardinals coaching staff has promoted Palm Beach manager Oliver Marmol to the Major League first base coaching position, while Memphis manager Mike Shildt was promoted to the Cardinals Quality Control Coach, a uniform position on the Major League staff.  Bill Mueller will return to his duties as Assistant Hitting Coach, a position he held in 2015.  All of the remaining coaches will return to their positions in 2017 except for Assistant Hitting Coach Derrick May, who will not return.  May was added to the staff for 2016 when third base coach Jose Oquendo had to take a medical leave of absence.

Several transactions were made in the Cardinals Scouting Department.  The Cardinals hired Bob Gebhard as a Senior Special Assistant to the General Manager.  Gebhard was a past member of the Cardinals front office staff from 2000-04 and will be entering his 53rd season working in professional baseball.  Jared Odom was promoted to Manager of Pro Scouting, giving Baseball Operations Analyst Tyler Hadzinsky an increased role in amateur scouting.

Matt Bayer received a new title of Amateur Baseball Analyst, increasing his role in scouting players with an emphasis on the department’s new incorporation of video scouting.

Long-time Cardinals National and Southeast Regional Cross Checker Roger Smith announced his retirement at the conclusion of 2016, leading to several promotions in the Cardinals Scouting department.

Aaron Looper was promoted into Smith’s role of National Cross Checker, Aaron Krawiec was promoted to West Regional Cross Checker, Ty Boyles was promoted to Midwest Regional Cross Checker and Kevin Saucier (saw-SHAY), a 25-year veteran of the Major League Scouting Bureau, was hired as the Southeast Regional Cross Checker.

Changes in the Amateur Scouting department of the Cardinals include the hiring of Brock Ungricht, a former assistant baseball coach at Stanford University, as a Southern California area scout.  Jabari Barnett, who was the Amateur Scouting Video Coordinator with the Los Angeles Dodgers, will take over the role of an area scout for the Cardinals in South Texas and Western Louisiana.  T.C. Calhoun, a 4th Coach with the Cardinals Texas League affiliate in Springfield (AA), takes over as area scout in the Virginias and North Carolina.  Nathan Sopena, the Cardinals 4th Coach with the Cardinals Midwest League affiliate in Peoria (A), will become an area scout in the Upper Midwest.

“We are pleased to move forward with Mike’s contract and a revamped coaching staff.  We are excited about the changes to our scouting department and look forward to finalizing our Player Development staff in the near future,” said Cardinals Sr. Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak.
