KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Jeremy Maclin will miss his third consecutive game when Kansas City visits the Denver Broncos for a pivotal AFC West showdown Sunday night. Maclin hurt his groin early against Jacksonville on Nov. 6 and has not played since. His absence has coincided with a pronounced drop in production by the offense.

Outside linebacker Dee Ford, who has 10 sacks this season, has also been ruled out after hurting his hamstring in last week’s loss to Tampa Bay. Defensive tackle Jaye Howard is out with a hip flexor.

The Chiefs hope to get top cornerback Marcus Peters back from a hip pointer. He was questionable on the final injury report Friday, along with linebacker Derrick Johnson, defensive tackle Dontari Poe, defensive end Kendall Reyes and cornerback Steven Nelson.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) – Monte Morris scored 20 points and No. 21 Iowa State took the lead for good in the final minute before holding off Indiana State 73-71 in the opening game of the AdvoCare Invitational at Disney World on Thursday.

Joe Thomas shrugged off a poor shooting performance to put the Cyclones ahead with a 3-pointer with 54 seconds remaining. Nazareth Mitrou-Long made one of two free throws with 7.6 seconds left, and Indiana State’s hope for an upset ended when Brenton Scott’s 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

Iowa State (4-0) advanced to the tournament semifinals, despite going 5 for 15 from the foul line over the final 10 minutes. The Cyclones trailed for most of the first half before using an 11-0 run to wipe out a nine-point deficit. Scott led Indiana State (2-2) with 20 points on 7 of 18 shooting, a pair of long 3-pointers that gave the Sycamores leads in the closing minutes.

CANCUN, Mexico (AP) – Monique Billings scored 27 points to help No. 9 UCLA beat Iowa 78-65 on Thursday night at the Cancun Challenge. Billings made nine of her 12 shots and was 9 for 9 from the free throw line for the Bruins (4-1). Jordin Canada and Kennedy Burke each added 13 points for UCLA.

UCLA led by four at halftime and Iowa (4-2) cut the margin to two early in the third quarter, but was unable to get any closer. Ally Disterhoft scored 16 points and Megan Gustafson added 15 to lead the Hawkeyes. After a back-and-forth first half, UCLA led 42-38 at the break. Trailing 35-30, the Bruins went on a 12-3 run to close the opening 20 minutes.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Sam Cassell Jr. had 15 points and seven assists, and Iona beat Drake 64-53 on Thursday night in the Great Alaska Shootout for its first victory of the season. Iona trailed 38-28 early in the second half but the Gaels hit three straight 3-pointers – two by Jon Severe – to pull to 38-37. Severe gave Iona its first lead of the second half at 42-41 after another 3.

It was tied at 52-all with 5:46 left but Iona went on a game-clinching 12-0 run, highlighted by three 3-pointers. Half of Iona’s 24 made field goals were from 3-point range.

Severe and Deyshonee Much each added 14 points for Iona (1-2). Much made four 3-pointers and had six assists and six steals. Severe also hit four 3s and Cassell added three. Jordan Washington scored 10 of his 13 points in the first half but Iona was behind 30-25. Reed Timmer led Drake (1-3) with 14 points and three 3-pointers. De’Antae McMurray added 12 points – all in the first half.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The former top-ranked female administrator for the University of Iowa athletic department has taken her lawsuit against the school from state to federal court. Jane Meyer filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday accusing the school, athletic director Gary Barta and the Iowa Board of Regents of violating her First Amendment and Title IX rights.

Meyer says that discovery and deposition testimony in her state-level case led her to believe that Barta’s decision to remove her from the athletic department was made only after Meyer had presented Barta a memo in which she complained about gender equity, equal pay and retaliation against her and others.

The Atlantic Boys Basketball team is entering the 2016-17 with a lot of excitement.  The Trojans are coming off an 18-5 season and return a number of key players on the roster.  The Trojans ended last season with a disappointing loss in the District Final to Glenwood and this year’s team is using that disappointment as motivation. Atlantic hopes they can build off the momentum of last season and achieve even more.

That’s Senior Garrett Franken who was second on the team with 16 points per game last year and was also the Trojans second leading rebounder. Franken recently signed to play Division 1 basketball at the University of North Dakota and will be counted on as the main leader this year with the graduation of leading scorer Ryan Hawkins.

The 6’7″ Franken will slide back to a more natural position as the stretch 4 after playing some point guard last year. Austin Alexander will be one of a number of players enjoying an increased role as he takes on the point guard role. Chase Mullenix became an impact player toward the end of last season as a Freshman and will have a much larger role to start this season. Jake Olsen, Grant Podhajsky, and Scott Leonard will also be counted on for large roles for the Trojans.  Leonard is the Trojans inside presence but said he has worked hard to improve is shooting through the off-season.

Podhajsky played important minutes for the Trojans last year and will be counted on to have a larger scoring role this season.

The Trojans open up the season on Tuesday, November 29th at Winterset with a 7:30pm tip time.

Nodaway Valley’s Shane Breheny held a signing ceremony on Tuesday at Nodaway Valley High School to announce his decision to attend Southwestern Community College to run track and cross country.

Breheny was a standout runner for the Wolverines finishing 3rd recently at the State Cross Country Meet. He was a four time individual state qualifier.  He also had success on the track qualifying three times for state in the 3,200 meters.

Breheny will join Atlantic’s Phoenix Shadden on the SWCC Cross Country squad as he also recently announced his decision to become a Spartan.
