The Cy-Hawk Trophy resides in Ames after Iowa State claimed a mistake filled 10-7 victory over Iowa in Kinnick Stadium. The Cyclones won despite three turnovers and two blocked punts.

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell. The Cyclones snapped the Hawkeyes six game winning streak in the series.

The game turned in the third quarter when Iowa fullback Monte Pottebaum fumbled inside the one as Iowa appeared ready to grab a commanding 14-3 lead. The Cyclones responded with a 99-yard scoring drive to take the lead for good.

The Cyclones host Ohio on Saturday.

Mahomes throws 5 TD pases to lead Chiefs to opening win at Arizona

Patrick Mahomes threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns and the Kansas City Chiefs rolled to an opening 44-21 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Chiefs jumped on top early with three touchdown passes from Mahomes on the first three drives for the Chiefs. The Chiefs led 23-7 by halftime and kept playing well in the 2nd.

The Chiefs outgained Arizona 488 to 282 yards. Mahomes finished 30 of 39 passing and he hit tight end Travis Kelce for 8 of those passes for 121 yards and the first touchdown.

Kansas City gets a season opening win for the seventh straight season, the longest active streak in the NFL and sixth longest in history. Kicker Harrison Butker injured his ankle during the game and safety Justin Reid had to kick a couple of kickoffs and extra points going 1 for 2.

Adams County Sheriff’s Office: 2 arrested for allegedly shooting at trail camera(s); 12-year-old faces Burglary & other charges

(Corning, Iowa) – The Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Sunday morning, issued several reports, two of which pertained to the shooting of a trail camera(s) on a landowner’s property. Authorities say On Sept. 4th, they were notified a trail camera was hit by a shotgun blast or blasts. Upon further investigation, Kai Turner, of Corning, and Ashton Turner, of Greenfield, were arrested. Ashton Turner was charged with Criminal Mischief in the 5th Degree, and Trespassing. Kai Turner was charged with Criminal Mischief in the 5th Degree, along with Aiding and Abetting. Both were booked into the Adams County Jail, and later released on a $300 bond, each.

A juvenile was arrested Sept. 4th, after authorities were notified of a burglary that had occurred at The Pub. Upon further investigation, a 12-year-old was taken into custody for Burglary in the 3rd Degree, Theft in the 4th Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the 2nd Degree. The youth was released to their parents, and the case was turned over to the Juvenile Court System.  On Sept. 3rd, Deputies with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle, at Highway 34 and Poplar Avenue. Authorities say following an investigation, Mateo Mancha, of Omaha, NE., was taken into custody on charges that include Possession of a Controlled Substance/Marijuana – 1st offense, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Macha was also cited for speeding. A passenger in the vehicle, Emme Eblen, of Omaha, was arrested and charged with PCS/Marijuana – 2nd offense, and Poss. of Drug Paraphernalia.

On Sept. 2nd, Adams County Deputies conducted a routine traffic stop for speeding, at Sycamore Avenue and Highway 34. Upon investigation, a Probable Cause search was conducted on the vehicle for the odor of marijuana. Joshua Villanueva, of Lenox, was arrested for PCS/Marijuana – 1st offense, and Poss. of Drug Paraphernalia. He was also cited for speeding Villanueva later posted a $1,300 bond and was released. And, on Sept. 1st, 23-year-old Moesha Garcia, of Lenox, was arrested for PCS/Marijuana – 1st offense, and Poss. of Drug Paraphernalia, following  a traffic stop for speeding, at the intersection of Highways 34 and 25. Her bond was set at $1,300.

Semi strikes cable barrier west of Adair – snarls traffic for hours

(Cass County, Iowa) – Traffic on Interstate 80 west of Adair was rerouted for hours, Saturday, following a semi tractor-trailer accident that caused both east- and westbound-lanes to be closed. Authorities say the semi struck the cable barriers and stretched those barriers across the interstate, along with the truck. All interstate traffic was diverted down Highway 148 for several hours.

Traffic in the crash zone was stalled from about mile marker 73.6 to near the Wiota Exit 67 (Wiota), while authorities worked to detour motorists who were not caught on either side of the blockage. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Agencies assisting with traffic control at the scene includes: the Cass and Audubon County Sheriff’s Offices; Iowa State Patrol (ISP); Iowa DOT motor vehicle enforcement (MVE), Anita and Atlantic Fire Departments; Cass EMS; the Iowa DOT, and Richter and Son Towing.

BEVERLY BENNETT, 93, of Atlantic, died Friday, Sept. 9th, at the Heritage House, in Atlantic. Services for BEVERLY BENNETT will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17th, at the First United Methodist Church, in Atlantic. Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation will held at the funeral home on Friday, Sept. 16th, from 4-until 7-p.m., and on Sat. Sept. 17th at the 1st United Methodist Church, from 10-a.m. until 11-a.m.; Online condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.

Burial is in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family, for later designation.

Iowa State @ Iowa: Iowa State used a 21-play, 99 yard drive that spanned the end of the third quarter into the fourth quarter to beat Iowa 10-7 at Kinnick Stadium. Hunter Dekkers hit Xavier Hutchinson for an 8-yard touchdown pass to cap off the drive that took 11:49 off the game clock. Iowa State survived three turnovers and two blocked punts to end the Hawks 6-game win streak in the series. Aaron Blom did have a chance to tie the game on the last play after a couple of penalties gave Iowa a shot at a 48-yard field goal attempt for Iowa but it sailed wide left.

UNI @ North Dakota: The UNI Panthers fell to 0-2 on the season with a 29-27 loss at North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks outscored the Panthers 22-17 in the second half to edge out the win. UND quarterback Tommy Schuster was 20-23 passing for 275 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. UNI’s Theo Day was 20-27 passing for 334 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception.

Drake vs. Missouri S&T: The Drake Bulldogs lost in overtime at home to Missouri S&T 17-14. The Miners got a field goal in the extra session to win it. Drake’s Ian Corwin went just 15-40 passing for 177 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 intereption.

STEVEN PAUL WESSLING, 63, of Anita, died Friday, September 9, 2022, at Caring Acres Nursing Home, in Anita. Funeral service for STEVE WESSLING will be held 10-a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15th, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Anita. Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family is at the funeral home on Wed., Sept. 14th, from 5-until 7-p.m.

Interment will take place following the service at Evergreen Cemetery in Anita.

Memorials may be directed to the Wessling Family in honor of Steven. Memorials will be directed at a later date to many of his favorite local charities and events and may be mailed to the Schmidt Family Funeral Home (P.O. Box 523, Atlantic, IA 50022).

STEVE WESSLING is survived by:

His wife – Lana Wessling, of Anita.

His sons – Robert Wessling, and Trevor (Christa) Wessling, all of Anita.

His daughter – Laura (Justin) Rumple, of Casey.

ATV fatality at Olin Access Wildlife Management Area in eastern Iowa

(Olin, Iowa) – Officials with the Iowa DNR report that a man from Jones County died, during an ATV accident, early Saturday morning. Authorities say that at around 3:30 AM, 35-year-old James Daniel Minor, of Olin, died when the ATV he was operating drove off the roadway at the Olin Access Wildlife Management Area. Minor hit an obstruction and was declared dead at the scene.

Jones County Sheriff assisted the Iowa DNR at the scene.
