Ingle sparks No. 20 Drake women to MWC Tournament title

MOLINE, Ill. (AP) — Caitlin Ingle’s jumper sent the game into overtime where she scored five points and led No. 20 Drake over Northern Iowa 74-69 on Sunday for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship and the Bulldogs’ conference-record 22nd consecutive victory.

The top-seeded Bulldogs (28-4) were making their 12th tournament title-game appearance, winning their sixth championship and first since 2007. Ingle, the tournament MVP and the conference’s all-time assists leader, scored a career-high 22 points, with seven assists and six rebounds.

With 5.5 seconds left in regulation, Ellie Herzberg came off a screen, took a pass from Madison Weekly and hit a 3-pointer to give UNI (24-8) the lead. After a timeout, Ingle made her tying jumper from the free-throw line.

In overtime, Herzberg and Becca Jonas exchanged 3-pointers before Ingle was fouled while scoring on a drive and completed the 3-point play. Ingle added a short bank shot before Becca Hittner made a free throw for a six-point edge. Herzberg made her fifth and final 3-pointer with 23 seconds left before Drake’s Lizzy Wendell capped the scoring with two free throws.

AP Source: Chiefs, S Sorensen reach $16M, 4-year agreement

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs and safety Daniel Sorensen have agreed to a $16 million, four-year contract that keeps the restricted free agent off the market, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The deal includes $8 million guaranteed and more than $2 million in incentives, according to the person, who spoke Saturday on condition of anonymity because Sorensen must still pass a physical.

Kansas City put a second-round tender on Sorensen this week, which meant he could have tested the market. But the Chiefs could then match any offer or get a second-round pick as compensation. But considering coach Andy Reid’s affinity for Sorensen and how well he played last season, both on defense and special teams, it made sense for the Chiefs to try to retain him. Sorensen has appeared in 16 games each of the past two seasons.

No. 23 Iowa State beats No. 11 W Virginia for Big 12 title

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Monte Morris scored 17 points, Deonte Burton and Matt Thomas helped him deal with West Virginia’s attacking defense, and No. 23 Iowa State beat the No. 11 Mountaineers 80-74 on Saturday night for the Cyclones’ third Big 12 Tournament title in four years.

Burton had 16 points and Thomas finished with 12 for the fourth-seeded Cyclones (23-10), who will enter the NCAA Tournament as one of the nation’s hottest teams. They’ve won nine of their last 10 games, with their only loss during that stretch coming a week ago in Morgantown.

They avenged that defeat in a big way at the Sprint Center.

Iowa State has never lost in four appearances in the Big 12 title game, while the Mountaineers (26-8) remain without a conference tournament title of any kind since winning the Big East in 2010.

Jevon Carter had 18 points for West Virginia.

MOLINE, Ill. (AP) — Lizzy Wendell scored 23 of her season-high-tying 34 points in the second half when No. 20 Drake rallied to beat Wichita State 86-68 on Saturday and advance to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship game with a record-setting 21st straight victory.

The top-seeded Bulldogs (27-4) were tied for the longest win streak in MVC history with the 2013-14 Wichita State team before beating this season’s Shockers for the third time and earning a title-game matchup Sunday with the winner of No. 2 seed Northern Iowa and No. 6 seed Evansville.

The Bulldogs scored only 20 points in the first half before breaking away with a 24-point third quarter in their Friday quarterfinal win over Illinois State, and Saturday found themselves trailing the fifth-seeded Shockers 33-27 at halftime. But they scored 37 points in the third quarter, including 13 from Wendell and 12 of Sammie Bachrodt’s 14, to lead by 12. They led by as many as 24 in the final quarter.

Caitlin Ingle had 11 assists and 11 points for Drake.

Rangie Bessard scored 27 points with 13 rebounds for the Shockers (15-16).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Deonte Burton scored 22 points, Monte Morris had 15 and No. 23 Iowa State routed TCU 84-63 on Friday night to reach its third Big 12 Tournament title game in the past four seasons.

The fourth-seeded Cyclones (22-10) clearly weren’t impressed – or intimidated – by the Horned Frogs’ victory against top-ranked Kansas in the quarterfinals. Iowa State used two big first-half runs to assume control, and then stretched its advantage to 26 points midway through the second.

Vladimir Brodziansky and Jaylen Fisher had 10 points apiece for the No. 8 seed Horned Frogs (19-15), but nobody seemed to have much pep in their step after their heart-stopping win over the Jayhawks.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Jesse Jansma scored 22 points, Ben Gesink added 21 and Hull Western Christian beat Pella Christian 62-50 Friday night to win its second straight Class 2A state championship and third in four years.

It was the ninth title overall for Western Christian (24-2), tying Davenport Central for the most in state history. And coach Bill Harmsen became the first to coach state championship teams in boys and girls basketball at the same school.

Harmsen, in his first season as the boys coach, guided the Western Christian girls to three titles.

Kenden Veenstra led Pella Christian (22-5) with 12 points, Levi Jungling scored 11 and David Kacmarynski had nine points and 10 rebounds.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Grant DeMeulenaere scored 17 points and sparked a fast start that carried Grand View Christian to a 61-50 victory over Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Friday night and the Class 1A state championship.

Mach Nyaw added 11 points and Bryce Crabb 10 for Grand View Christian (27-1), which has been open for only three years but already has become a force in small-school basketball. The Thunder lost only to Class 3A state tournament qualifier Pella and finished with 27 straight victories.

Joe Smoldt led Gladbrook-Reinbeck with 25 points but struggled early when Grand View Christian took control. Smoldt, averaging 30 points a game, missed his first seven shots and went 5-for-19 from the field.

Caden Kickbush, usually the No. 2 scorer for the Rebels (26-3), started 0-for-6 and scored only four points.
