(Des Moines, IA) – After a three-game losing streak, the Hawkeyes jumped back on the rails as they were able to beat Florida 88-52 in Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday. The Hawkeyes have now won seven of their last eight games in Wells Fargo Arena since 2013.

Four players knocked in double-digits on the night as the leader in the game for the Hawkeyes was Owen Freeman. The freshman knocked in 14 points while grabbing 11 boards for a double-double. Payton Sandford was right behind him with 13 points and three rebounds while Tony Perkins and Brock Harding combined for 22 points with 12 and 10 points respectively. Iowa shot 54% from the field while going 10-26 on the night from the perimeter.

On the opposite end, Florida A&M was led by K’Jei Parker with 11 points and three rebounds. Both Hantz Louis-Jeune and Love Bettis knocked down seven points each. The Hawkeyes outrebounded the Rattlers 52-34 and had a 22-9 advantage in the assist game.

Iowa is one of the top defensive teams in the country as they knocked down 88 points tonight and average 84.8 points per game as they rank second in offense in the Big Ten. Coach McCaffery is now just five wins from becoming the winningest coach in Iowa basketball history. He needs just one more win to have the most Big Ten victories in program history.

The Hawkeyes are going to take on UMBC this Wednesday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m.

(Des Moines, IA) – The Iowa women’s basketball team defeated Cleveland State onSaturday 104-75. The Hawkeyes are now 11-1 on the season for the ninth time that the Hawkeyes are 11-1 to start their season in program history.

Leading in the game was none other than Caitlin Clark as she put down 38 points, dished out five assists, and five boards. Clark shot 61% from the field while also knocking down nine threes in the game. This was Clark’s 13th game with 35+ points 5+ assists, and 5+ rebounds which is the most in women’s college basketball since 2009-10. She is now the all-time leader in 30+ points performances with 42 for the most in both men’s and women’s college basketball. Right behind Clark was Hannah Stuelke as she put down 17 points and 13 rebounds for another double-double which marks the second in her career. Kate Martin also put down 15 points and grabbed six boards while Sharon Goodman ended up second on the team in rebounds with ten.

On the opposite end, Cleveland State featured four double-digit scorers including Mickayla Perdue who knocked down 24 points against Iowa. Colbi Maples was able to put down 18 points while dishing out six assists. Carmen Villalobos and Sara Guerreiro finished the game with 13 and 10 points respectively.

Head Coach Lisa Bluder has brought the Hawkeyes to five 11-1 starts. In the postgame, Bluder thanked fans for the sold-out Wells Fargo Arena in which, “I (Bluder) thought we did a nice job putting on a good show.” Iowa is currently on an eight-game winning streak with their only loss this season to the Wildcats of Kansas State. Iowa also has won eight games this season by 20+ points or more.

The Hawkeyes will be taking on Loyola-Chicago in their last non-conference matchup this Thursday at 5:00 p.m.

Two Atlantic wrestlers won individual titles at the Jim Kinyon Norseman Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Roland-Story High School.

Taye Jordan (17-4) defeated Drake Howard (16-7) of Sergeant-Bluffs-Luton in the (106) weight class finals by fall in 2:41.  Aiden Smith, at (126), now 19-1, pinned Kolton Munson, now 14-1,  of Ogden in 1:10. Braxton Hass (113) finished in third place.

In the Shenandoah Girl’s Wrestling Tournament, Missouri Valley ended out on top as they won with 207.5 points. The Lady Reds featured five first-place finishers in the tournament. Those first-place finishers include Jordan Buffum (120), Brooklyn Lange (135), Nicole Olson (155), Maya Zappia (190), and Jocelyn Buffum (235). Clarinda finished in fourth with 95 points while they featured Jalon Olson (170) Randi Welchans (115), Kylar Downey (130) in first, Kambry Gordon (110) in second, and Alayna Shepherd (145) in third. Harlan came in 11th with 33 points but did place both Ivy Stevens (130) and Kyrsten Madden (140) in fourth while Secilia Kurtz (125) came in fifth. LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team went three-for-three today at the Las Vegas Desert Duals in the Flamingo Hotel and Casino. The top-ranked Hawkeyes faced Adams State, fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa, and eighth-ranked Simon Fraser.

The Hawkeyes defeated Adams State, 34-11, in their first dual of the day, earning three pins, one technical fall, and three forfeits. At 109, Sterling Dias started the dual off with a pin, 1:37 into the first period over Julianna Candelaria. Emily Frost defeated Trinity Perez at 130 with a 12-2 tech. fall. Reese Larramendy notched the second fall for Iowa in just 42 seconds at 143 over Liana Fernandez. At 155, Ella Schmit made quick work with her 58 second pin over Miranda Sanchez. Ava Rose, Haley Ward, and Alivia White all won via forfeits.

Iowa continued with a win over Colorado Mesa in the second dual of the afternoon, 25-20. Dias kicked it off at 101 with a 6-0 decision over eighth-ranked Isabella Morales. With the Hawkeyes giving up two forfeits at 109 and 116, Rose came in at 123 and secured a tech. fall over Hania Halverson, 16-6. Frost continued the dual at 130, notching a decision over Kaydence Boyd, 6-1. With Iowa behind 17-10, Schmit closed in the gap securing a pin in 1:06 over Erica Schroeder at 143. Larramendy gave Iowa the lead at 155 with her 10-0 tech. fall over Celina Cooke. At 170, Haley Ward brought another five team points in downing Samantha Vasquez via a pin in 1:01.

The Hawkeyes finished their dual sweep clinching the win against Simon Frasier, 24-23. Dias opened at 101 with a 1:00 pin against Gina Bolognese. After three forfeits and two losses favoring the Red Leafs the Hawkeyes trailed 5-23. Schmit put Iowa back on the board with a 26-second pin against Clara Scaglioni at 143 pounds. Larramendy continued with a 10-0 tech. fall over 10th-ranked Paige Maher at 155, cutting the Iowa deficit to nine. Ward and Alivia White persisted, putting Iowa ahead with two pins. Ward notched a pin in 1:49 over Mikaela Trolland at 170, while White took just 2:25 to finish her pin against fourth-ranked Julia Richey to secure the win for the Hawkeyes.

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake women’s basketball team caught Creighton on an afternoon the 20th-ranked Bluejays rarely missed and lost 89-78 in the Bulldogs’ final nonconference game at the Knapp Center on Sunday.

The Bulldogs (6-4) were not bad themselves, shooting 62 percent in the second half and 53 percent for the game, but they couldn’t make much dent in the 12-point lead Creighton built at halftime because the Bluejays (8-2) kept answering at the other end.

Creighton shot 60.6 percent in the second half, including 8-for-12 from three-point range, and 54.5 percent for the game. It was just the second time this season a Drake opponent has shot better than 50 percent.

Drake got another outstanding game from Missouri Valley Conference scoring leader Katie Dinnebier, who filled the stat sheet with 26 points, seven assists to match her season high and three steals. The fiery junior made 8-of-12 shots and went 4-for-5 from deep, tying her career high for triples. It was Dinnebier’s ninth career game of 20 or more points and fifth this season.

Anna Miller just missed her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Grace Berg added 14 points and passed Kristin Turk for 21st place on Drake’s career scoring list, running her total to 1,410.

Courtney Becker had seven points, five rebounds, two assists and a block for the Bulldogs, who shot better than 50 percent for the sixth time this season.

Emma Ronsiek scored 25 of her career-high 31 points in the second half to lead Creighton, which won at the Knapp Center for the first time since a 108-100 four-overtime thriller on Dec. 3, 2017. Ronsiek made her first 10 shots of the second half and finished 13-of-19 from the field, including 3-for-6 from deep.

Creighton’s Lauren Jensen went 5-for-8 on treys and scored 22 points as the Bluejays finished 14-of-31 from behind the arc.

Drake took the early lead, getting a 3-pointer from Berg to start the game and a steal and layup from Taylor McAulay for a 5-3 edge. Creighton answered with 10 straight points and the Bulldogs had to play catch-up the rest of the way.

With Creighton up 19-10 after one quarter, Dinnebier led a 9-0 charge that pulled the Bulldogs into a tie at 19, hitting a three-pointer from the left wing, drawing a foul and making both free throws and feeding Ashley Iiams for a fastbreak layup after stealing the ball.

The Bluejays answered with eight straight points and went on to build a 40-28 halftime lead. Then came a third quarter that was both productive and frustrating for the Bulldogs.

Drake shot 65 percent in the period, went 4-for-5 from three-point range and made all five of its free throws, but could slice only one point off the lead. That’s because Creighton went 13-for-19 from the field and also buried four shots from deep.

The end result was a 70-59 lead after the two teams combined for 61 points in the quarter – 31 by Drake. The Bulldogs kept pace through the fourth quarter but never got the difference into single figures.

“We needed to run this team off the three-point line a little bit more, especially early in the game,” Suzie Glazer Burt Head Coach Allison Pohlman said. “We also didn’t have the most opportunities to get our transition game going and take advantage of the dribble-drive. [Creighton] ended up with some 50/50 balls and tipped plays, and I’d like to see us make those plays. Hats off to Creighton and that squad, they really stuck it to us on those.”

Drake completes the nonconference portion of its schedule at North Dakota on Thursday, Dec. 21. The game tips off at noon. The Bulldogs start MVC play on Dec. 30 at Southern Illinois, with the next home game Jan. 4 against Indiana State.

FORT WORTH, Texas – Two University of Iowa women’s wrestlers had top-five finishes at Senior Nationals this past weekend in Fort Worth, Texas. Senior Marlynne Deede finished in second place and freshman Rose Cassioppi had a fifth-place finish, both at 76kg.

Deede and Cassioppi are both now qualified for the 2024 Olympic Trials in State College, Penn. April 19-20.

At 76kg, Cassioppi went 4-2 in the tournament with wins via fall, decision and two technical falls. She had losses to fellow Hawkeye Deede in the second round and Brooklyn Hays in the consultation semifinals.

Deede went 3-0 on the first day of competition with wins over Hannah Sjostrom, Cassioppi and top-seeded Skylar Grote. She fell in the finals to Precious Wieser.

Four players scored double figures to lead Lewis Central over Atlantic 77-41 in boys’ basketball at Atlantic on Friday.

Jackson Larsen led the team with 16 points, Nash Paulson and Garret Rutledge 12, and Kamdyn Cross added 11.

The Titans led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter and 39-33 at the half. Colton Rasmussen carried the Trojans offensively with 14 first-half points and 23 for the game.

Lewis Central pulled away in the second half. Six players contributed to outscoring Atlantic 21-11 in the third quarter. Jackson Larsen drew the hot hand in the final frame with four three-point shots and 12 of the Titan’s 27 points., while holding the Trojans to 11 and seven respectively.

Besides, Rasmussen’s 23-points, Gavin McLaren posted 10, Brock Henderson, 4, Tyrell Williams, 3, and Zaydin Parker, 1.

Atlantic travels to Shenandoah on Tuesday. Lewis Central plays Gretna-East at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs today.

Nodaway Valley continues to win tournament after tournament as they won the Pride of Iowa Conference Tournament on Friday night with a total of 195 points. The Wolverines featured four first-place finishers which include Keyin Steeve (120), Carmine Shaw (144), Ashton Honnold (215), and Trenton Warner (285). The Wolverines were able to come over Martensdale-St Marys by just 17.5 total points. Lenox finished with 105 points in sixth place as they featured Dylan Stein (138)and Jorda Martin-England (175) in first. While in second place, they featured Chase England (157) and Jace Smith (285). The final results for each individual weight class are listed below while the team results are at the bottom of the page

The girl’s Western Iowa Conference Tournament wrapped up on Friday night as Missouri Valley won the tourney with 186.5 total points. Area first-place finishers include Elsie Mausbach of Treynor (100), Chloe Roane of Riverside (110), Carly Henderson of Riverside (115), Molly Allen of Riverside (125), and Ana Wilson of Riverside (140). Both Missouri Valley and Riverside dominated the top as they featured a wrestler in almost every weight class other than four on the night. All final results are posted below and the team scores are listed at the bottom of the page.
