Iowa’s Jake Adams is Big Ten Player of the Year

Sports

May 24th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Iowa junior Jake Adams is the Big Ten player of the year. Adams is a rare combination of average and power. He finished fourth in the conference with a .344 average and led the Big Ten in home runs and RBI. His 24 homers broke Iowa’s single season record. His numbers also show how far the Iowa program has progressed. Four years ago the Hawkeyes had two home runs, as a team.

Iowa coach Rick Heller says Adams is a complete hitter. He says Adams is a professional level hitter already. The Hawkeyes are 34-19 and open the Big Ten Tournament tonight (Wednesday night) in Bloomington, Indiana against fourth seeded Maryland.

Forsythe, Dodgers win it in 13th after Kershaw duels Lynn

Sports

May 24th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Logan Forsythe doubled in a run in the 13th inning to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers over the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Tuesday night after a stellar duel between starters Clayton Kershaw and Lance Lynn.

Forsythe played for the first time in a month and struck out in his first four at-bats before walking in the 11th and delivering the winning hit in the 13th. His double off Jonathan Broxton (0-1) scored Enrique Hernandez.

Kershaw and Lynn struck out 10 batters and allowed a run each, with Kershaw going nine innings and Lynn pitching eight. The Cardinals got just three hits against Kershaw, and the Dodgers had two off Lynn, including Yasmani Grandal’s homer in the first inning.

Kershaw missed out on his majors-leading eighth victory by giving up a run in the ninth. Randal Grichuk singled, advanced to second on a groundout then scored on a wild pitch to tie it at 1.

Josh Fields (1-0) pitched the 13th for Los Angeles.

Joc Pederson left the game after a frightening collision with Yasiel Puig in the 10th inning.

ST. LOUIS, MO., May 23, 2017 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s game in Los Angeles that they have activated left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons (right intercostal strain) from the 10-day disabled list.  The team optioned right-handed pitcher Sam Tuivailala to Memphis (AAA) following Sunday’s win.

Lyons, 29, who began the 2017 season on the disabled list while recovering from off-season right knee surgery, has appeared in just two games for St. Louis this season, allowing one run in 3.0 innings pitched.

Lyons made three injury rehabilitation appearances at three levels (Peoria-A, Memphis-AAA, Springfield-AA) after going on the 10-day disabled list May 28.   He was a combined 1-1 with a 5.56 ERA in those three appearances, striking out seven.   His last appearance came on May 20 in a 5.0 inning start for Springfield against Northwest Arkansas.

Tuivailala has logged 11.0 innings in his 10 appearances for the Cardinals this season, going 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA.
