Low expectations greet Hawkeye summer workouts

Sports

June 8th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Football team is flying under the radar this summer as the Hawkeyes get ready for a new season. Some of the preview magazines are picking the Hawkeyes to finish fourth in the Big Ten West and much of the doubt surrounds an offense that needs a new quarterback and a thin receiving corps. Junior defensive end Parker Hesse says the low expectations don’t bother them.

As the new players show up for summer workouts Hesse says the focus is on fundamentals and developing team leaders.

Iowa’s hopes on offense hinge on an a veteran offensive line that won the Joe Moore Award as the nation’s top line last season. Senior tack Ike Boettger.

There is not much of an off season anymore for college football players. Senior linebacker Josey Jewell spent some time away between the end of final exams and the start of summer workouts.

The Hawkeyes open next season at home on September 2 against Wyoming.

Scooter ends HR spree, but Reds rally to beat Cardinals 6-4

Sports

June 8th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

CINCINNATI (AP) — St. Louis kept Scooter Gennett in check a day after his four-homer game, but Patrick Kivlehan had a pinch three-run shot that sparked the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-4 victory on Wednesday night, extending the Cardinals’ longest losing streak in four years.

The Cardinals have dropped six in a row. They let a 4-1 lead slip away when Kivlehan — another utility player like Gennett — and Joey Votto homered during a five-run seventh inning.

Gennett became the first Reds player to homer four times in a game during the 13-1 win a night earlier. He connected in his last four at-bats and had a chance for more history on Wednesday — nobody has homered in five straight plate appearances.

Using the same tan bat that produced five hits overall the previous night, Gennett grounded into a double play his first time up against Lance Lynn, ending his homer streak. He also struck out, hit into another double play and singled as part of the Reds’ go-ahead rally.

Iowa loses 3 players, including WR Ronald Nash

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa says three of its players won’t be back in the fall. The Hawkeyes announced Wednesday that wide receiver Ronald Nash, linebacker Angelo Garbutt and kicker Mick Ellis are no longer with the team.

Nash’s absence might sting the most since Iowa is so thin at receiver. Nash caught two passes last season. Garbutt was listed as a third-stringer entering spring workouts, and Ellis had been beaten out to start by Keith Duncan. The Hawkeyes say Nash and Ellis will remain in school at Iowa, while Garbutt intends to transfer to another school.
