Cardinals Announce Coaching Changes to the Major League Staff

Sports

June 9th, 2017 by Jim Field

St. Louis, Mo., June 9, 2017 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon a series of coaching moves at the Major League level.  Senior Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak announced that Mike Shildt will assume third-base coaching duties and handle outfield defense, as coach Chris Maloney will be re-assigned to a new role within the organization.  Maloney was in his sixth season with the Major League team and second as third-base coach.  Shildt joined the Major League club this season as a quality control coach, and has been in the organization since 2004.

The team also announced that assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller has taken a leave of absence.  In his place, Mark Budaska will join the Major League club as assistant hitting coach.  Budaska is in his 10th season with the Cardinals, spending all previous nine seasons as the hitting coach at Triple-A Memphis.  Additionally, Ron “Pop” Warner will join the Major League club to assist the coaching staff.

Mozeliak also announced that second baseman Kolten Wong will be activated from the disabled list prior to tonight’s game vs. Philadelphia.  To make room on the club’s 25-man roster, infielder Jhonny Peralta will be designated for assignment.  Wong had missed 13 games on the disabled list with a left elbow strain and had played in three games at Peoria (A) on a rehabilitation assignment (1-7, HR).  This season the second baseman is hitting .278 (37-133) and ranks 3rd on the team with 11 doubles.  Peralta missed 26 games earlier this year with an upper respiratory condition, and had appeared in 21 games with 14 starts at third base.

Budaska will wear uniform No. 79, Warner will wear uniform No. 75.

Small town Iowa marathon comes to an end after 20 years

June 9th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

MARATHON, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa marathon that gained national recognition for its small-town ethos and quirky name will end because of a lack of volunteers and organizers becoming exhausted. Race director Al Pierce tells the Sioux City Journal the Marathon to Marathon will end after Saturday’s event.

The race starts in Storm Lake and ends in the small town of Marathon. It began in 1996 as a celebration of Iowa’s 150-year anniversary. The race is USA Track and Field certified and sanctioned, which allows entrants to be eligible to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

Pierce says the final marathon has participants from nearly 40 states. A spaghetti dinner for runners, supporters and community members will be offered the evening before the start of the race.

Votto leads Reds to 5-2 win, 4-game sweep of Cardinals

Sports

June 8th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

CINCINNATI (AP) — Joey Votto had a two-run homer among his four hits, Adam Duvall had three hits off Mike Leake and the Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Thursday to complete a four-game sweep.

The Reds hadn’t swept the Cardinals in four games since 2003 in Cincinnati, during the first season at Great American Ball Park. St. Louis has lost seven in a row overall for the first time since 2013.

Scott Feldman (5-4) limited the Cardinals’ slumping lineup to four singles in seven shutout innings. Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Austin Brice. Raisel Iglesias got his 12th save.

The Reds traded Leake (5-5) to the Giants for Duvall in 2015, and the right-hander signed with the Cardinals after that season. Leake has yet to beat his former team, going 0-4 in seven starts with a 4.79 ERA.
