Trojans use loss to Denison-Schleswig as learning experience

Sports

September 14th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans football team is using the close loss to Denison-Schleswig in week 3 as a learning experience to prepare for their next game at home against Winterset.  Atlantic fought hard and made a lot of big plays last Friday but the Monarchs came up with a couple more at the end to out-duel the Trojans. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said they were obviously disappointed to lose the game but they were pleased with the team’s compete level.  He said it wasn’t a lack of effort that cost the Trojans the game and ultimately a game like that can be a valuable learning tool to clean up the details.

The Trojans get their next opportunity to show that improvement on Friday night at the Trojan Bowl against Winterset. The Huskies are 2-1 on the season and are coming off a nice win over ADM last week. Coach McDermott says the Winterset offense uses a lot of variety which makes them tough to prepare for.

Winterset quarterback Casey Kleemeier has completed 63% of his passes for 481 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season. He has also rushed for two scores and Coach McDermott said keeping him in the pocket will be a big key.

Offensively Atlantic hopes that the line can continue to improve and give quarterback Jaxson Eden time to be comfortable for throws throughout the game. Coach McDermott also said the run game will need to improve to have success.

The Trojans and Huskies will meet up for a 7:30pm kickoff at the Trojan Bowl. Catch a full interview with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45pm on Friday evening on KJAN.

Rookie Luke Weaver shines again, Cardinals top Reds

Sports

September 14th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Luke Weaver threw six innings of two-hit ball, Tommy Pham drove in two runs and stole two bases, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-2 on Thursday afternoon.

The Cardinals, who are chasing the first-place Cubs in the National League Central and the Rockies in the wild-card standings, have won five of their last six and nine of 12.

Weaver (6-1), a rookie right-hander who has boosted the St. Louis rotation, allowed one unearned run, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.

Weaver was 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA in four appearances, including three starts, in June. He’s now 3-0 with a 0.99 ERA through his first three starts in September.

Rookie left-hander Amir Garrett (3-8) was charged with four runs in four innings. He struck out seven and walked five.

Griswold excited for challenge against Southwest Valley

Sports

September 14th, 2017 by admin

The Griswold Tigers got their ground game running full bore last week against Riverside and hope to carry that momentum into a tough challenge against Southwest Valley on Friday night. The Tigers (1-2, 1-0) had four players top the 100-yard mark on the ground last week. Griswold Head Coach Andy Everett said they were finally able to get their full line together for a game and they played really well in the week 3 win.

Southwest Valley Head Coach Anthony Donahoo knows slowing down the run game is paramount against Griswold and he told his team the Tigers will be coming into the game with a lot of confidence after their performance last week.

The Timberwolves (3-0, 1-0) have been able to keep some balance in their offense through a tough stretch of games to open the season and Coach Donahoo says it all starts up front.

Senior quarterback Chance Cobb has thrown for four touchdowns and rushed for two more in the Timberwolves 3-0 start. Griswold Head Coach Andy Everett thinks Southwest Valley is talented across the board but had really high praise for Cobb.

The Timberwolves have strong numbers in their program and that allows them to platoon a few guys on either side of the ball to keep everyone fresh. Coach Everett says that will make them a tough team as the season moves along but more importantly he thinks his line will need to make proper reads to give the Tiger offense a chance to have success against a tough Timberwolf defense.

We’ll have coverage of the Tigers versus the Timberwolves on KJAN. Pregame starts at 6:30pm with kickoff from Griswold at 7:00pm. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at kjan.com, on the KJAN mobile app, and live streaming video on KJANTV.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Tyler Mahle threw five innings, Eugenio Suarez hit a grand slam and the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0. Jesse Winker added a home run and Joey Votto had two hits and drove in a run for the Reds, who had lost four of their last five games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City is coming off a big win over New England heading into Sunday’s home game against Philadelphia. The Eagles started their season with a win over Washington.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia drove in runs in the ninth inning as the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3.
