Podcasts, Sports

January 26th, 2018 by admin

Scott Leonard had a career night in the post for the Atlantic Trojans boys basketball team on Friday night with 40 points and Atlantic beat Red Oak 76-52. The Trojans fed the ball to Leonard inside early and often and he kept delivering. The senior dropped in 21 of the Trojans 36 first half points and continued to pour in shots in the second half. Atlantic had a 23-10 lead by the end of the first quarter but their struggles to defend the perimeter kept them from pulling away in the first half. Red Oak had 5 threes in the first half and 9 by the end of the game.  Atlantic’s defense improved in the second half and they were able to put together a couple of runs to put the game out of reach.

Logan Reilly finished with 9 points while Chase Mullenix and Grant Podhajsky finished with 8 each. The Trojans improved to 9-7 with the win and next have a big road game at Harlan on Tuesday night.

Red Oak was led by Owen VonDielingen with 15 points and Garrett Rolenc with 12 points on four threes. The Tigers fall to 2-12 and will travel to Shenandoah on Tuesday.

Sports

January 26th, 2018 by admin

The CAM Cougars took two wins in a road basketball doubleheader at West Central Valley on Thursday night.

In the girls game the Cougars raced out to an early 17-6 lead and controlled the lead throughout. CAM got a big night from both Madison Gettler and Paige McAfee. Gettler finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. McAfee had 18 points and 6 rebounds. The Cougars improved to 13-4 with the win. West Central Valley was led by 14 points from Kennedy Lose and they fall to 7-10 on the season.

The boys game turned into a tight battle. CAM had an early 8 point lead but West Central Valley hit a pair of late threes in the first half to tie the game at 31 by the break. CAM was able to grab a three point lead by the end of the third quarter and then only led by one early in the fourth quarter. They then used a 10-2 run to secure a lead that they would hang onto for the win. Thomas Hensley overcame a slow shooting start and was very effective playing along the baseline in the second half. He finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 steals. Nic Holste dropped in 26 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for the Cougars. CAM improves to 11-4. West Central Valley’s leading scorer was Kaleb Badker with 19 points. The Wildcats are now 2-15.

Racist chants rain down on Iowa high school basketball team

News, Sports

January 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

SPENCER, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say some student spectators at a predominantly white school in northwest Iowa greeted a visiting rival boys’ basketball team with racist chants. The chants and slogans at the Jan. 19 game at Spencer High School included some fans yelling that the Storm Lake players should “go back where you came from.” Other students chanted, “USA.”

The school superintendents say the Storm Lake district has 2,400 students, and 84 percent are non-Caucasian. The Spencer district has 1,900 students and is predominantly white. Spencer Superintendent Terry Hemann told The Des Moines Register that administrators have disciplined the Spencer students involved, but he declined to provide details. A similar situation occurred during a football game last October between the rival schools.

Former Illinois QB Scheelhaase named Iowa State Running Backs Coach

Sports

January 26th, 2018 by admin

(From cyclones.com) AMES, Iowa – Nate Scheelhaase, who spent the last three seasons on the football staff at Illinois, has been named the running backs coach at Iowa State, head coach Matt Campbell announced today.

“Nate will be a valuable addition to our staff,” Campbell said. “I feel Nate is a rising star in this profession. He is energetic, has a high football I.Q., and will fit in perfectly with our current staff. We can’t wait for Nate to get started here at Iowa State.”

Scheelhaase was on staff at Illinois from 2015-17, spending his first season as assistant director of football operations and running backs coach on Bill Cubit’s staff. He was retained by current head coach Lovie Smith and worked the last two seasons as an offensive analyst for the Fighting Illini.

A 2012 graduate of Illinois, Scheelhaase finished his career as the Illini’s all-time total offense leader with 10,634 yards, a total that ranks seventh in Big Ten history. In 2013 he had one of the best offensive seasons in Illinois football history, leading the conference in passing yardage (272.7 ypg), total offense (295.2 ypg) and completion percentage (66.7) during his senior campaign, while also breaking the school record for passing efficiency (140.7) to earn All-Big Ten honors.

A four-year starter and two-time team captain, Scheelhaase is the only quarterback in UI history to lead the Illini to bowl victories in back-to-back seasons and is one of just two players in Big Ten history to amass over 8,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards in his career. He finished among the Illinois career leaders in almost every quarterback category, ranking first in starts (48), second in completion percentage (63.0), completions (775) and rushing yards by a QB (2,066), and third in passing yardage (8,568), touchdown passes (55) and passing efficiency (130.2).

Scheelhaase earned the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor in 2014, was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and earned two degrees from the University of Illinois – a bachelor’s degree in communication (2012) and a master’s in sports management (2013).

Scheelhaase and his wife Morgan have a son, Cru.

Legalizing fantasy sports an issue again at statehouse

News, Sports

January 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Wagering on “fantasy” sports teams would become legal in Iowa under legislation that’s cleared one statehouse hurdle, but it would only be legal if the organization hosting the fantasy gaming is licensed by the state to do so. John Cacciatore has been hired by DraftKings and FanDuel to lobby legislators.

“There are hundreds of thousands of Iowans today who play season-long fantasy sports with their friends and neighbors and co-workers, etc.,” he says. “Those same Iowans would like to also play daily fantasy sports which is basically in an online platform but that’s not allowed because, technically, fantasy sports is illegal in Iowa.”

The bill that cleared a five-member House subcommittee Thursday would allow the state’s casinos to take wagers on fantasy sports teams. Businesses like FanDuel and DraftKings would have to apply for a state license, pay state taxes and be subject to oversight from state gambling regulators. Reverend Brian Carter is lobbying against the bill on behalf of the United Methodist Church. He says gambling “fosters greed” and puts faith in chance.

“We would rather support Iowa values of education, hard work and perseverance,” Carter says. “Gambling is a menace to personal character and social morality.”

A lobbyist for the 19 state-licensed casinos says DraftKings and FanDuel ultimately aim to “morph” into online sports betting sites. He points to what happened last weekend as one site allowed “fantasy” teams to be assembled from N-F-L playoff game rosters — and he says the other site plans to offer fantasy sports betting on the Super Bowl.

Gustafson scores 29, Iowa women top No. 12 Ohio State 103-89

Sports

January 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s Megan Gustafson scored 29 points, winning a shootout with Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell on Thursday night, and the Hawkeyes ended a three-game losing streak with a 103-89 win over the No. 12 Buckeyes, who have now lost three straight.

Kathleen Doyle added a career-high 25 points and tied her career best with 11 assists. Makenzie Meyer had 18 points, matching Doyle’s four 3-pointers, and Chase Coley had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (16-5, 4-4 Big Ten), who dropped out of the rankings this week.

Mitchell led the Buckeyes (16-5, 5-3) with 27 points but the NCAA 3-point record-holder and second-leading scorer at 24.8 was just 3 of 11 from deep. Linnae Harper had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Stephanie Mavunga had 15 points and 10 boards and Asia Doss 14 points.

Gustafson, fourth in the nation at 24.8 points, had the last nine in a 14-0 run that made it 20-6. Ohio State only got it down to a one-possession game three times after that but Iowa never got the lead to 14 again until the final free throw. The last challenge was late in the third quarter but Gustafson then scored five straight points. Gustafson was kept from a double-double for only the second time this season, getting just five rebounds, more than seven below her average.

Iowa was 9 of 17 from distance, shot 54 percent overall (37 of 68) and made 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes were 5 of 23 from deep and shot 41 percent overall (35 of 86).
