ROBERT ALLEN MYERS, 83,of Shelby, died Saturday, December 3, 2022, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital, in Council Bluffs. A Memorial service for ROBERT MYERS will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, at the Shelby United Lutheran Church, in Shelby. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the Shelby United Lutheran Church, is on Saturday (12/10), from 10-a.m. until 11-a.m.

ROBERT MYERS is survived by:

His wife – Bonnie Myers, of Shelby.

His sons – Charles (Jody) Myers, and Steven (Natalie) Myers, all of Shelby.

His daughters – Laurie (Shane) Hoepner, of Hancock; Susan (David) Hulsebus, of Tennant, and Brenda Boyle, of Papillion, NE.

His sister – Darla (Homer) Buell, of Bassett, NE.

and 14 grandchildren.

Shelby County Sheriff’s report, 11/19-11/26/2022

(Harlan, Iowa) – The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office today (12/5/22), issued a report on arrests made from November 19th through the 26th.
11-19-22:  Two men from Council Bluffs, 22-year-old Kile Jaymes Bascue, and 18-year-old Brandon Phillip Crozier, were arrested after a call for service in the 100 block of Highway 173. Bascue was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance, Keeping Premises or Vehicle for Controlled Substance, Interference with Official Acts, OWI 1st, and Reckless Driving. Crozier was charged with Public Intoxication, Trespassing, and Person Under 21 Using Tobacco/Vapor Product.
11-20-22: Four men were arrested on separate charges: 22-year-old Andrew Aaron Burchett, of Harlan, was arrested following a traffic stop on Highway 44. Burchett was transported to the Shelby County Jail and charged with OWI 1st, Reckless Driving, and Speeding; 20-year-old Gage Mitchell Mundorf, of Atlantic, was arrested following a traffic stop on Highway 59. Mundorf was transported to the Shelby County Jail and charged with Driving while License Denied or Revoked, Operating Non-Registered Vehicle, Dark Window or Windshield, and Person under 21 using Tobacco/Vapor Products 2nd Offense; 37-year-old Christopher Neal McGuire, of Omaha, NE was arrested Nov. 20th, following a traffic stop on Highway F-32. McGuire was transported to the Shelby County Jail and charged with Controlled Substance Violation, Possession of Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Keeping Premises or Vehicle for Controlled Substance, Failure to Affix Drug Stamp, Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability, Operating a Non – Registered Vehicle, and Failure to Reduce Speed upon Approach of Emergency Stationary Vehicle; and, 43-year-old Melody Lynn Miller, Omaha, NE was arrested at the same scene. She was charged with Controlled Substance Violation, Possession of Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Failure to Affix Drug Stamp.
11-21-22: 35-year-old Ashley Joe Cibic, of Harlan, was arrested on a Shelby County Warrant. Cibic was charged with Controlled Substance Violation, Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drug 2 counts, Child Endangerment, Sexual Exploitation by School Employee. And, 31-year-old Michael John Tremayne, of Harlan, was arrested on the 21st, following a traffic stop on Chatburn Ave. Tremayne was transported to the Shelby County Jail and charged with Driving while License Denied or Revoked.
11-24-22: Shelby County Deputies arrested 21-year-old Ethan Michael Leinen, of Portsmouth,  following a call for service on 1100th St Just west of Hwy 59. Leinen was transported to the Shelby County Jail and charged with OWI 1st, Stopping, Standing, or Parking Where Prohibited, Operating non-Registered Vehicle, Fail to Give Notice of Address or Name Change, and Fraudulent use of Registration.
11-26-22: 36-year-old Jeremy James Carrier-Tischer, of Harlan, was arrested following a traffic stop on Highway 44. Carrier-Tischer was transported to the Shelby County Jail and charged with Driving while Barred.
Note: Criminal charges are merely accusations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Chiefs drop road game against Bengals

The Kansas City Chiefs came up short on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals 27-24 on Sunday afternoon.

The Chiefs fell behind 14-3 early in the game but rallied back to take a 24-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Bengals got a field goal to climb within four and then took advantage of a Travis Kelce fumble. Cincinnati capped off a ten-play drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Joe Burrow to Chris Evans to pull on top 27-24. The Chiefs missed a 55-yard potential game tying field goal and then the Bengals were able to run out the clock. A big pass from Burrow to Tee Higgins for 11-yards to get a first down was the final dagger.

Burrow finished 25 of 31 passing for 286 yards and two touchdowns. He also rand for 46 yards and one touchdown. The Bengals improved to 8-4.

Patrick Mahomes was 16 of 27 for 223 yards and 1 touchdown for the Chiefs. Isaiah Pacheco had 66 yards and one score on the ground. The Chiefs fell to 9-3 on the season.

Next up for Kansas City is a road trip to Denver next Sunday afternoon. We’ll have that game on KJAN with pregame at 2:00 p.m.

Shelby County Supervisors to discuss increase in Board members

(Harlan, Iowa) – The Shelby County Board of Supervisors will meet in their regular weekly session, 9-a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 6,2022), in Harlan. The meeting takes place in their Board Room at the Courthouse. Auditor Mark Maxwell says, among the items on the Board’s agenda, is discussion with regard to increase the number of Supervisors from 3- to 5-members. The Board is expected to act on:

  • A Utility Permit for the Nishnabotna Valley REC
  • A West Nishnabotna Water Trail Memorandum of Agreement
  • and, a Resolution for the 2023 County 5-year Program (Secondary Roads Dept.)

The Shelby County Supervisors will discuss and act on the matter of a Jail Administrator/Sheriff Secretary, A grounds use permit for the “Roar into Harlan” Summer 2023 event, and evaluations and budget discussion/notification. The Board will discuss Public notification pipeline issues facing Shelby County, and, they are expected to receive a report from Todd Valline, with the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.

Iowa edges out Iowa State in exciting wrestling dual

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Senior Tony Cassioppi’s 9-2 victory over No. 9 Sam Schuyler propelled the second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team to an 18-15 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series victory over No. 7 Iowa State on Sunday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

With the dual tied 15-15, Cassioppi had three takedowns and piled up 2:46 of riding time to clinch Iowa’s 18th straight victory in the series. The Hawkeyes move to 6-0 this season.

The Hawkeyes and Cyclones split the 10 matches in the dual, but the difference was Iowa posted three bonus-point victories – major decisions by Spencer Lee, Cobe Siebrecht and Nelson Brands.

Iowa ended Iowa State’s 18-dual winning streak and improved to 12-0 with the Dan Gable Traveling Trophy on the line.

Lee, the nation’s No. 1 ranked 125 pounder, made his season debut and came out with a flurry with two takedowns and two four-point near falls to build a 12-2 first-period lead.  Lee finished with 1:23 of riding time to post a 16-5 major decision victory over Corey Cabanban to give Iowa a 4-0 lead.

Siebrecht used a six-point move in the first period en route to a 10-2 major decision victory at 157 over Iowa State’s Jason Kraisser.  Siebrecht, who is ranked 14th, improves to 5-0 with five bonus point wins this season.

No. 15 Nelson Brands secured Iowa’s final bonus point win, majoring MJ Gaitan, 13-5, at 174.  Brands had a takedown and two-point near fall in the first and led 9-5 through two.  The Iowa City, Iowa, native had a late takedown to secure the major and he finished with four takedowns and 2:12 of riding time in the win.

Iowa also got a victory from No. 2 Real Woods at 141 in his Hawkeye and Carver-Hawkeye Arena debut – a 4-2 win over 10th-ranked Casey Swiderski.  Woods rode out Swiderski the entire second period and ended with 1:40 of riding time in the match.

Iowa State posted wins at 133, 149, 165, 184 and 197 with four of the five wins coming by two or fewer points.

Atlantic Area Chamber Ambassadors Visit B Designed

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Atlantic Chamber Ambassadors were hosted by Barb Hofeldt, owner of B Designed, on Thursday, December 1st, 2022. The Ambassadors welcomed Barb as a new Chamber Member and viewed her showroom.

Barb Hofeldt graduated with an Architectural Engineering degree from Iowa Western in 2003 and went on to work for various businesses in her Interior Designing career. For the last three years, Barb has created her own small business and is located under Brymons Interiors. Barb’s favorite part of the design process is seeing the final product and comparing to the “before.” Barb shared with the Ambassadors that she can start a project with as little as a napkin drawing to as much as a clean slate in a new build.

B Designed specializes in cabinetry, countertops, backsplashes, and flooring and enjoys meeting clients and creating the kitchens bathroom or closet of their dreams. Barb works with a team of flooring and countertop installers and has great recommendations of other professionals for any project need.

Creston man arrested for more than 18-counts of Child Sexual Abuse & related charges

(Creston, Iowa) – Officials with the Creston Police Department reports 41-year-old Gregory James Clair, of Creston, was arrested Thursday night (12/1/22) at the Creston/Union County Law Enforcement Center. Clair faces charges that include 18-counts of Sex Abuse of a Child Under 12, four-counts of Incest, and two-counts of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child. He was being held in the Union County Jail on a $495,000 cash or surety bond.

Authorities said also, 35-year-old Brandon Hurshel Whitfield, of Creston, was arrested at a residence in the 300 block of Pine Street, Friday morning, on two Union County warrants. The first warrant was for Failure to Appear (FTA) on a charge of Eluding/speeding 25 mph or more over the legal limit. The second warrant was for FTA on an original charge of Domestic Abuse Assault (With injury of mental illness)/1st offense. He later posted bond and was released from the Union County Jail.

And, 44-year-old Michelle Robin Spaulding, of Creston, was arrested following a traffic stop Sunday morning. She was charged with OWI/1st offense, and later released on bond.

The Creston Police Department said also, that a woman residing in the 800 block of W. Adams Street, in Creston, reported Saturday morning, that her green, Chevy Suburban was stolen from her driveway. The vehicle does not run, and has a broken-out back window. The loss was estimated at $500.

SANDRA HANSON, 84, of Atlantic (& formerly of Manilla), died Friday, Dec. 2, 2022, at the Heritage House, in Atlantic. Funeral services for SANDRA HANSON will be held 2-p.m. Thursday, December 8, 2022, at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 12:30-p.m. until the time of service, Thursday.

Burial will take place in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla.

Her daughters – Julie (Doug) Schechinger, of Manilla; Jody (Reed) Chittenden, of Omaha; Jill (Kevin) Andresen, of Schleswig, and Jena (Chris) Larson of Atlantic.

Her sons – Joel (Julieann) Hanson, of Lincoln, NE, and Richard (Christy) Hanson, of Westside.

17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
