Area rescue, fire and towing company personnel had their hands full, Saturday morning

(Cass County, Iowa) – Firefighter/Rescue, law enforcement personnel and tow truck crews had their hands full Saturday morning, as they responded to no fewer than three separate accidents, in Cass County.

As we mentioned previously, one person was injured during a single vehicle accident at around 8:35-a.m., on Interstate 80 eastbound at mile marker 54. Rescue crews from Marne, Atlantic, and Cass EMS responded to the scene. Two persons were in the vehicle, one was injured, but both were transported to Cass Health, in Atlantic. A witness saw the vehicle fishtail, lose control and entered the northbound ditch before it struck a tree.

At around 10:37-a.m., rescue personnel and law enforcement responded to a single-vehicle accident on 770th Street, north of Glendale Road (Near Anita). Cass County Sheriff’s Deputy Kyle Quist reports an SUV driven by Devon James lost control on the gravel and ended-up in a ditch near a field. James was cited for failure to show proof of insurance – accident related. No injuries were reported.

And, Atlantic, Anita and Wiota Fire personnel were dispatched at around 11:52-a.m., to a semi tractor-trailer fire on I-80 eastbound, near mile marker 60. The semi’s tractor was separated from the trailer before the fire spread. The trailer, which was hauling some pork products, went up in flames and was a total loss. No injuries were reported.

Richter Towing assisted at the scene of the incidents. Deputy Quist said “It was definitely not a warm day,” to be out in the elements fighting the fire and taking care of the accidents. We thank him for the information and photos!

DAVID JEFF BROWN, 64, of Fontanelle, died Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the Crest Haven Care Center in Creston.  Graveside services for DAVID BROWN will be held 2-p.m. Tuesday, DECEMBER 27, 2022 at the Dale Cemetery, in Centerville (IA). Lamb Funeral Home in Fontanelle has the arrangements.

1 injured in Cass County I-80 accident, Saturday morning

(Marne, Iowa) – Authorities say one person was injured during a single vehicle accident this (Saturday) morning, in Cass County. LANNY KITE, 77, of Marne, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, at home. Funeral Services for LANNY KITE will be held 2-p.m. Wednesday, DECEMBER 28th, at Roland Funeral Home, in Atlantic.

The service will be livestreamed and a link will be provided closer to the date of service, on the funeral home’s website.

An open visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Dec. 27th, from 9-a.m. until 5-p.m.; Visitation with the family present, will be held at the funeral home, beginning at 1-p.m. on Dec. 28th.; Online condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.

Burial is in the Monroe Cemetery, north of Walnut.

NICOLE LEE [Stierle] BRADSHAW-OPPOLD, 50, of Atlantic, died Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Atlantic Specialty Care. Open visitation with family of NICOLE OPPOLD will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Private interment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery just west of Brayton, IA.

2 men arrested on warrants Friday, in Montgomery County

(Red Oak, Iowa) – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, in Red Oak, reports two men were arrested on separate active Montgomery County warrants, Friday. Authorities say Kevin L. Ward, of Urbandale, was arrested on a warrant for Violation of Probation, on an original charge of Control of a Firearm by a Felon – a Class D Felony.

And, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Justin L. Marsden, of Council Bluffs, on a warrant for Violation of Probation, on an original charge of Attempted Burglary 3rd Degree and Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd Offense.

Friday’s High in Atlantic was 24. Our Low this morning, 13. We received a Trace of snow yesterday. Last year on this date the High in Atlantic was 41 and the Low was 25. The Record High on this date was 65 in 1939. The Record Low was -18 in 1951.

No. 12 Iowa women host UNI Sunday

There is a women’s in-state battle in Iowa City on Sunday when 12th ranked Iowa hosts UNI. The Hawkeyes are 8-3.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder who enjoys the emotions of in-state games.

Bluder says senior guard Kate Martin will play on Sunday. Martin suffered a shin injury in a win over Minnesota.

UNI enters the game with a record of 5-3.

That’s Panther coach Tanya Warren who calls Iowa junior Caitlin Clark the best guard in the country.

The Panthers opened in-state play with an 88-85 loss to Iowa State a month ago.

Iowa State men host Western Michigan Sunday

Iowa State returns from final exams on Sunday by hosting Western Michigan. The Cyclones are 8-2. The Broncos are 3-7 and former Michigan State assistant Dwayne Stephens is in his first season trying to turn the program around.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger whpo talks about the challenges the Broncos provide.

Western Michigan is coming off a loss to Illinois-Chicago last weekend.
