Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Clayton Richard matched his career high with 10 strikeouts in eight strong innings for his first win in more than a month, and the San Diego Padres beat struggling Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 to salvage a split of their four-game series. Richard held the Cardinals to two runs and five hits while walking only one to win for the first time since April 9 at Colorado. Wainwright said he re-aggravated an elbow injury that had landed him on the disabled list.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Corey Kluber became the American League’s first six-game winner and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 11-2. The reigning Cy Young Award winner gave up two unearned runs in seven innings, scattering eight hits.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton guard Khyri Thomas says he will sign with an agent and remain in the NBA draft, meaning he’ll forfeit his final season of eligibility with the Bluejays. Thomas was the Big East defensive player of the year for the second straight season. Creighton coach Greg McDermott says he’s thrilled for Thomas, who is projected as a first-round pick in a number of recent mock drafts. Creighton had a first-round pick last year in center Justin Patton.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The nickname that Kevin Harvick was saddled with was supposed to be a playful jab at his occasional temper tantrums. But after setting a NASCAR record by winning for the fifth time in the first 12 races, Happy Harvick is just, well, pretty darn happy. But he still isn’t content, either. Harvick thinks his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing team can be even better.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Eric Hosmer hit an RBI double with no outs in the 13th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 2-1 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. Lindor hit solo home runs in the third and seventh, and scored four runs. His third career four-hit game extended the All-Star shortstop’s hitting streak to 13 games. Gyorko hits 1 of 5 Cardinals home runs in 9-5 win vs Padres

Sports

May 12th, 2018 by admin

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jedd Gyorko likes playing at Petco Park even though it hasn’t been his home ballpark for three seasons.

Gyorko homered and improved his batting average to .525 in 12 games against his old team, and Paul DeJong, Marcell Ozuna, Harrison Bader and Tommy Pham also went deep to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 9-5 victory against the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

“I’ve always felt like I’ve seen the ball decently here and I’ve had some seasons that I wasn’t very good here, either. I guess I’m comfortable here,” said Gyorko, who finished with three hits.

Gyorko is 21 for 40 with eight homers and 17 RBIs against his former team.

Gyorko was a second-round draft pick of the Padres in 2010 and played with San Diego from 2013 until being traded to St. Louis in December 2015. The Padres gave him a $35 million contract in April 2014, just 13 games into his second full big league season.

DeJong drove in a career-high four runs for the Cardinals, who scored all but one run on the homers. Four of the five long balls were off Padres rookie lefty Eric Lauer (1-2), who lasted only 2 1/3 innings.

DeJong hit a three-run shot to left in the second, with Ozuna and Gyorko having reached on singles. It was his eighth.

Bader homered leading off the third, his second, and Ozuna and Gyorko hit consecutive shots with one out to chase Lauer. It was Ozuna’s third and Gyorko’s fourth.

Bryan Mitchell, demoted to the bullpen after going winless in seven starts, allowed Pham’s two-run homer in the sixth that gave St. Louis a 9-0 lead. It was his seventh.

The only Cardinals run that didn’t come via homer was on DeJong’s single in the fifth, which scored Ozuna. Ozuna scored three runs.

UP NEXT

Cardinals: RHP Michael Wacha (4-1, 3.35) is scheduled to start Saturday night’s game. He’s 3-0 with 3.00 ERA in three career starts at Petco Park.

Padres: RHP Tyson Ross (2-3, 3.89) is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in six career appearances against the Cardinals.

EVANSTON, Ill. — The University of Iowa baseball team rallied late, but fell to Northwestern, 7-6, in extra innings on Friday night at Rocky Miller Park.

The Hawkeyes fought back from a 5-3 deficit to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning. Junior Robert Neustrom led off a single to centerfield before senior Austin Guzzo followed with a two-out single to put runners on the corners.

After pinch runner Kace Massner moved into scoring position on catcher’s indifference, sophomore Justin Jenkins tied the game with a two-run single, making the score 5-5 to send the game into extras.

The Hawkeyes took the lead in the 10th.  Junior Chris Whelan singled to start the frame before moving into scoring position on a Grant Judkins sacrifice bunt.  Senior Matt Hoeg gave Iowa a 6-5 lead with an RBI to right field, but Iowa missed a chance for more when Ben Norman struck out to leave the bases loaded.

Northwestern rallied in the bottom of the 10th against reliever Grant Leonard, using a one-out walk and single to put the game-winning run on base.  With two outs, the Wildcats’ Jack Dunn delivered a two-run single up the middle to give Northwestern the walk-off 7-6 victory.

The Hawkeyes will continue the series agains the Wildcats with a 2:00pm game on Saturday. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 1:30pm.
