Former Alabama OT Transferring to Iowa

Sports

January 21st, 2024 by Jim Field

Former Alabama offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor said he is transferring to Iowa.

Proctor, who is from Des Moines, started every game at left tackle for Alabama as a freshman this season.

He told On3.com on Saturday that he committed to play for the Hawkeyes. He had announced his intentions to leave the Crimson Tide on social media on Wednesday.

Proctor, who had verbally committed to the Hawkeyes in high school, made a late decision to sign with Alabama.  After one successful season, helping to lead the Crimson Tide to the college football playoff, Proctor entered the transfer portal Wednesday.  Saturday, he attended the Iowa men’s basketball game and announced he was committing to Iowa.

Proctor, a Southeast Polk High School star, was one of the most coveted offensive line recruits in the country.

DRAKE EARNS DRAMATIC VICTORY TO TIP OFF DES MOINES’ HOMETOWN TEAM WEEKEND

Sports

January 19th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

DES MOINES, Iowa – Grace Berg’s spin and Anna Miller’s hustle helped the Drake women’s basketball team take sole possession of first place in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Berg spun her way down the lane for a layup to put the Bulldogs ahead with 1:30 left. Miller then sped along the baseline to grab the ball after Courtney Becker’s shot was blocked and dropped in a layup, giving the Bulldogs the edge they needed to hold on for a 69-65 victory over Belmont at the Knapp Center on Friday night.

Drake (13-4, 6-0) rallied time after time to grind out a win over the league’s best defensive team and start the program’s Hometown Team Weekend on a high note and run its winning streak to seven, the longest in the three-year tenure of Suzie Glazer Burt Head Coach Allison Pohlman.

Belmont fell to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in league play and, with Murray State’s 95-75 loss at Northern Iowa, the Bulldogs remain as the only unbeaten left in league play. Murray State visits the Knapp Center on Sunday for a 2 p.m. Alumni Day game.

Hawkeyes Roll Past Boilermakers

Sports

January 19th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The third-ranked University of Iowa men’s wrestling team won eight of 10 matches to roll to a 34-6 victory over Purdue on Friday night on Mediacom Mat inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes won six bouts via bonus points, including ending four matchups early via technical fall.

Iowa recorded 34 takedowns to Purdue’s three. The Hawkeyes outscore the Boilermakers in match points, 118-38.

“I think that we have to continue that,” said head coach Tom Brands. “I think there were some key matches where we did not convert, guys rolled on us. Those were big takedowns at 125 and at 157. We have to keep cleaning that up and getting better. We’re up for that challenge, and we’ve gotten better there, but we can’t go to sleep on that, have to convert.”

Purdue came out on top to open the night in a battle of top ranked wrestlers at 125. No. 2 ranked Matt Ramos recorded a 4-1 decision over top-ranked Drake Ayala.

Cullan Schriever put the Hawkeyes back in front on the scoreboard at 133 where they would remain for the rest of the contest. Schriever tallied 20 points as he won a major decision over Dustin Norris.

Schriever started a run of three straight Hawkeye bonus point victories as Real Woods put together an 8-0 major decision over Greyson Clark at 141. At 149, Victor Voinovich III tallied six takedowns to record a 19-4 tech. fall over Marcos Polanco.

“I did a good job getting into my attacks and converting on my finishes,” said Voinovich. “I would get those takedowns and eventually just keep working the pace and get the tech. fall. It’s a competition in the room every day, and I just need to be ready when my opportunity comes to make the most of it.”

Second-ranked Jared Franek sent the dual to the break with a 2-1 decision over #16 Joey Blaze at 157.

Iowa won four of the five matches after the break. No. 6 Michael Caliendo won a 9-4 decision over Stoney Buell at 165. No. 9 Patrick Kennedy got the Hawkeyes some more bonus points with a 19-4 tech. fall at 174, and No. 14 Zach Glazier improved to 16-0 with a 20-5 tech. fall over Ben Vanadia at 197

“Hitting my stride, getting back into it, I don’t know,” said Kennedy. “I just know that every time I feel like I am on the mat, I just get a little better. You get more comfortable. Even though I’ve been doing this for a long time. I just love that, I love the floor, I love the competition of it. You know you get nervous, but man when I walk out there it’s so free. You walk out there and it’s a wrestling match, and it’s just you versus another guy an that’s the beauty of it.”

Purdue notched a win at 184 when James Rowley won a 5-1 decision over Aiden Riggins.

Bradley Hill closed out the dual with a tech. fall over Tristan Ruhlman winning 19-4. Hill recorded six takedowns and needed just 4:05 to dispatch Ruhlman.

“Kennedy, Glazier and Hill those matches were tech. falls, that’s a lot of takedowns,” said Brands. “Didn’t go to sleep, a three-point takedown helps with the quick tech. fall, but it can also bite you and get a guy back into it quick too. It goes both ways, and you can’t go to sleep.”

The victory moves Iowa’s dual record to 8-0 and 3-0 in Big Ten Conference action. The Hawkeyes travel to Illinois on Friday at 8 p.m.

Atlantic Boys Basketball stumbles against Clarinda

Sports

January 19th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Boys Basketball team is now 3-10 midway through season after a 63-52 loss at Clarinda on Friday night.  The Trojans suffered from poor shooting in the fourth quarter and couldn’t keep out of foul trouble with a Clarinda team that answered every Atlantic basket throughout the game.  The Cardinals took advantage of a scoring drought for the Trojans in the third quarter and grabbed a 5-point third quarter lead.  Atlantic tried to cut into that lead to start the fourth quarter but Clarinda pushed back and went on a 10-0 run midway through tthe fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Clarinda was led by Creighton Tuzzio with 25 points and Dalton Wright with 10.  Atlantic got 21 points from Colton Rasmussen in the loss.

Clarinda improves to (6-7) with the win and host Stanton on Monday. Atlantic’s new record is (3-10) with the loss and continue their road trip to Creston on Monday. Tipoff for that contest is 7:30 p.m.

Trojan Girls lose momentum in Clarinda

Sports

January 19th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Girls basketball team struggled to hold together any momentum in the second half in a road loss at Clarinda 49-36 on Friday night.  The Trojans started off the first quarter strong with a 10-0 run and looked calm. In the second quarter Atlantic struggled to find consistent scoring and take care of the basketball but still found themselves up by two at halftime leading 21-19. But the second half would see Clarinda grab just enough of a run to pull out of reach for Atlantic.  The Cardinals outscored the Trojans 15-7 in the fourth quarter and that was enough to push them to the win as Atlantic didn’t catch many breaks all night.

Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason explained that a lack of aggression hurt Atlantic’s chances of winning Friday night.

Addy Wagoner and Maddie Cole led Clarinda with 16 each points each in the victory and the Cardinals picked up their eighth win of the season overall.

Atlantic was led by Paytn Harter with 19 points and Maddie Richter with 6 as their two-game winning streak comes to an end.  The Trojans travel to face a competitive Creston team on Monday. It’s another matchup that Coach Vargason is making sure his team isn’t taking lightly.

Tipoff for that game is set at 6 p.m.

CAM Girls Basketball is leaning on senior experience for second half of the season

Sports

January 19th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The (10-1) CAM Cougars are sitting atop of the Rolling Valley conference thanks to the fiery play of Eva Steffensen and her veteran heavy team. CAM is currently riding an eight-game winning streak and have been a dominant team to play in the Rolling Valley Conference. Head Coach Joe Wollum credits the attitude of his players for one of the reasons as to why they’ve been so successful this season.

One player that brings a positive attitude and love for the game of basketball is leading scorer Eva Steffensen. Steffensen is averaging 21 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She can do just about anything on the team as she is also the currently leading the team in blocks with 23 and steals with 39.

The talent on CAM is not just limited to the efficient scoring by Steffensen. Senior Meredith Rich has been making an impact on defense for the Cougars and has earned credit from her Coach. Rich is third on the team with total points at 96 through 11 games.

Another senior who has played selfless basketball and contributed to the offensive prowess of Cougar basketball this year is Kiera Nichols. Who sits at second in scoring and rebounding for CAM.

It is easy to get complacent while being on an 8-game winning streak and with over a week of games being cancelled coach Wollum has had to be creative with the practice schedule to keep his team sharp.

The Cougars are back at it Saturday afternoon when they travel to Coon Rapids to take on the Crusaders.

Drake men host Evansville Saturday

Sports

January 19th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Drake takes a share of the Missouri Valley Conference lead into Saturday’s game at home against Evansville. The Bulldogs are 6-1 in the Valley. The Aces are 2-5 but leading scorer Ben Humrichous (hum-rick-house) returned from injury in this week’s win over Valparaiso.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries. A key for the Bulldogs has been efficiency on offense. They lead the Valley at better than 51 percent from the field and also average a league low seven turnovers per game.
