Drake women’s hoops beats Murray State

DES MOINES, Iowa – A big second half enabled the Drake women’s basketball team to overcome a 43-point performance by Murray State’s Katelyn Young and beat the Racers 80-67 at the Knapp Center on Sunday afternoon.

The 43 points were the most by a Missouri Valley Conference player this season, but Drake (8-4, 3-1) countered with balanced scoring and a quick-handed defense that produced a season-high 13 steals and led to a 26-14 margin in points off turnovers.

Maggie Bair and Sarah Beth Gueldner scored 18 points each to lead the Bulldogs, who shot 61.3 percent in the second half (19-for-31) and outscored Murray State (9-4, 2-2) 49-35 over the final two quarters.

The Bulldogs will conclude a three-game homestand by hosting Northern Iowa at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

CONNIE EDWARDS, 70, of Greenfield, died Saturday, January 7, 2023, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Celebration of Life services for CONNIE EDWARDS will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2023, at the Greenfield United Methodist Church with a luncheon immediately following the service.  Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the arrangements.

An open visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 13th, from 2-until 7-p.m., with the family greeting friends from 5-until 7-p.m.

Burial will be at a later date in the Bryant Cemetery northwest of Fontanelle.

Memorials may be directed to the Connie Edwards Memorial Fund to be established by the family at a later date.

CONNIE EDWARDS is survived by:

Her husband – Kevin Edwards, of Greenfield;.

Her son – Blake (Melissa) Norton, of Waukee.

Her brother – Larry (Audrey) Dietrich.

2 grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Barbara Dietrich;  other relatives and friends.

Red Oak man arrested Sunday afternoon

(Red Oak, Iowa) – Police in Red Oak have arrested a man for Violating a Protection Order. 30-year-old Michael David Sinnott, of Red Oak, was arrested at the Montgomery County Jail, at around 1:50-p.m.  Sinnott was already being held in the jail on a Domestic Assault charge. His bond was set at $300 for the latest offense.

Budget workshops to be held in Adair & Montgomery County, Monday morning

(Greenfield, Iowa) – The Adair County Board of Supervisors will hold a Special Session that begins at 9-a.m. Monday. During their meeting, which takes place in the Adair County Courthouse Courtroom, the Board will hear FY 2024 Budget requests at specified times, from the following department heads.

  • 9:00-a.m. – Brenda Wallace, County Treasurer
  • 9:15-a.m. – Leesa Lester, Southern Iowa Trolley
  • 9:30-a.m. – Janelle Schneider, County Recorder
  • 9:45-a.m. – Rich Wallace, Courthouse Maintenance.

Last Friday, the Board heard from Sheriff Jeff Vandewater, County Sheriff, with regard to a new hire; and FY 24 Funding Requests from:

  • Jotham Arber, Environmental Health
  • Kerry Aistrope, Ag Extension
  • Stephanie Claussen, Adair County Home Care
  • Adair County Library Association
  • Terri Queck-Matzie, Adair County Tourism
  • Adair County Veterans’ Affairs
  • Karen Varley, Stacie Eshelman, and Cheryl Marks, Midwest Partnership and, the
  • Adair County Fair Board.

No action will be taken on the requests at this time. The Board’s regular weekly meeting will be held 9-a.m. Wednesday.

In Montgomery County, the Board of Supervisors will meet at 9-a.m. in their Courthouse Meeting Room, to discuss the overall budget, including all departments, county expenses, revenues, levies subject to discussion, and set additional budget work sessions, if necessary. The regular Montgomery County Board of Supervisor’s meeting is at 8:30-a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 10th.

Budget discussions will take place during that meeting, as well, along with the setting of the date and time for a Public Hearing to review a subdivision plat for the Stanton Technology Park Subdivision, and action as necessary.

Taco Charcuterie Board – Spend Smart Eat Smart

(Guthrie Center, Iowa) – Guthrie County Extension & Outreach, in Guthrie Center,  is hosting a Taco Charcuterie Board class, bringing people together to learn about the Spend Smart Eat Smart website and create a delicious treat to take home.

The class takes place Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 5:30 pm at the Guthrie County Extension & Outreach meeting room. During this session you will learn about tools on the Spend Smart Eat Smart website and get to prepare various recipes, such as various salsa’s, bean dip, seasoning and more, for your taco board that come directly off the website.

Pre-registration is required to attend by February 2 by calling the Extension office at 641-747-2276. The cost to attend is $20 and that will cover all the materials, including the board.

REV. CLAUDE J. WOOD, 94, of Atlantic, died Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Heritage House in Atlantic, IA. A Memorial Service for REV. CLAUDE WOOD will take place 2-p.m. Sunday, January 15, 2023, at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic. Schmidt Family Funeral Home of Atlantic has the arrangements.

A visitation with refreshments will be held following the memorial service starting at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, in the fellowship room of the United Church of Christ.

CLEON E. KLEMISH, 81, of Adair,  died at his home on Friday, January 6, 2023. A Mass of Christian Burial for CLEON KLEMISH will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., Jan. 11, 2023, at St. John’s Catholic Church, in Adair. Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Adair has the arrangements.

Public visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Adair.

Interment will be held following the mass at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. A luncheon will be hosted at St. John’s Catholic Hall following the committal.

CLEON KLEMISH is survived by:

His daughter – Mary Beth (Donny) Martin.

Red Oak man arrested 3x this past week; Elliott man arrested on a warrant

(Red Oak, Iowa) – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday, that 43-year-old Jeffrey Christopher Potter, of Elliott, was arrested at around 7:45-a.m., Saturday. Potter was arrested in Elliott, on a Pottawattamie County warrant for Violation of Probation. His bond was set at $2,000.

And, the Sheriff’s Office says for the third time in the past week, 54-year-old Richard James Linfor, of Red Oak, was arrested. He was taken into Saturday morning on two Page County Bench Warrants for Violation of Probation, on original charges of: Burglary/3rd Degree; Criminal Mischief/4th Degree; and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.  During the arrest, Saturday, authorities say “Linfor thought it would be a good idea to take off running. After a two block foot pursuit, he was arrested in the 500 block of Grimes Street, in the creek bank.”

The Sheriff’s Department added, “He went to jail winded and tired.”  Linfor was charged with Interference with Official Acts, and was being held on a $4,300 bond.

Drake handles Murray State

The Drake men’s basketball team rolled to an 82-64 win over Murray State at the Knapp Center on Saturday. The Bulldogs led by 15 at halftime and cruised to the victory.

5 players finished in double-figures for the Bulldogs, led by 17 from DJ Wilkins and 16 each from Darnell Brodie and Sardaar Calhoun.

Drake improved to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in MVC play. Next up for the Bulldogs is a Tuesday night game at Illinois-Chicago at 7:00 p.m.

UNI beats Southern Illinois

The UNI Panthers beat the Southern Illinois Salukis 69-57 on Saturday in Cedar Falls. The Panthers jumped out to a six-point lead by halftime and outscored the Salukis by the same margin in the second half.

Bowen Born led the Panthers with 27 points and 3 rebounds. Tytan Anderson added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

UNI improved to 8-8 on the season overall and 4-2 in the Valley.

Next up for UNI is a home game on Tuesday night against Murray State
