Walnut woman wins $30k in a Christmas gift, scratch game ticket

CLIVE, Iowa — A southwest Iowa woman won $30,000 on a scratch ticket she received from her husband as a Christmas gift. April Miller, from Walnut, said her husband Mitch bought the ticket at the Walnut Kum and Go and put it in her stocking.

She won the big prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “Merry Money” scratch game.

Miller said she plans to put her winnings toward home improvements, a new purse and a tropical vacation.

Merry Money was a $3 scratch game with a holiday theme. It began sales in October and ended this month after the conclusion of the holiday season.

No. 12 Iowa women host Northwestern tonight (Wednesday night)

Iowa women’s coach Lisa Bluder says Northwestern is much better than its 0-5 Big Ten record. The 12th ranked Hawkeyes host the Wildcats tonight (Wednesday night).

Bluder says Northwestern has played a brutal schedule to start Big Ten play.

Iowa is coming off a win at nationally ranked Michigan that Bluder feels was their most complete performance to date.

The Hawkeyes are 3-1 in the Big Ten. Listen for the game on KJAN beginning at 6:15-p.m.

Northern Iowa women visit Drake tonight (Wednesday night)

The Drake and UNI women collide tonight (Wednesday night) in Des Moines. Both teams are 3-1 in Missouri Valley play and UNI coach Tanya Warren says the Bulldogs like to change defenses.

Warren says the Bulldogs will be difficult to guard.

The Bulldogs are coming off home wins over Belmont and Murray State.

That’s Drake coach Allison Pohlman. The Bulldogs have won three straight in conference play despite losing senior guard Megan Meyer to a season ending knee injury.

That’s senior forward Grace Berg.

Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly on the injury to Stephanie Soares

Iowa State women’s coach Bill Fennelly says replacing Stephanie Soares will be a work in progress. ISU’s senior center suffered a season ending ACL injury in Sunday’s loss at Oklahoma. The 15th ranked Cyclones are at home Wednesday night against Kansas State.

Fennelly says the Cyclones will be a different type of team going forward.

Fennelly says they will try to get Soares another season.

No. 14 Iowa State crushes Texas Tech

Iowa State is 4-0 in the Big 12. The 14th ranked Cyclones raced out to a 19-point lead at halftime and clobbered Texas Tech 84-50, Tuesday. Gabe Kalscheur had a season high 25 points to go along with seven rebounds.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger. The Cyclones dominated the glass and forced 18 turnovers.

Otzelberger says the key to the fast start was defense.

Drake ends string of frustrating road losses

Drake finally broke through on the road. Tucker DeVries scored seven points in the final minute-11 of overtime, Tuesday, as the Bulldogs won at Illinois-Chicago 76-71. Drake won despite squandering a late five point lead in regulation.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries who says while the Bulldogs made some mistakes a number of players stepped up when needed.

Drake improves to 4-3 in the Missouri Valley.

UNI stages late rally to beat Murray State

UNI used a late 18-0 run to beat Murray State 75-67 Tuesday night, in Cedar Falls. It was a game the Panthers trailed by nine with about eight minutes remaining.

That’s UNI coach Ben Jacobson. The win was the fourth straight for the Panthers who are now 5-2 in Missouri Valley play.

Traffic stop W. of Red Oak nets drugs and the arrest of 2 people

(Rural Montgomery County, Iowa) – A traffic stop at around 12:35-a.m. today (Wednesday), west of Red Oak, resulted in the arrest on felony drug charges, of two people. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports Deputies conducted a traffic stop at Highway 34 and E Avenue. During their investigation, the Sheriff’s K-9 “Riddick” alerted to the vehicle, which was searched. During the search, Deputies recovered 85 grams of Methamphetamine.

35-year-old Jessie Bruce Fitzwater, of Council Bluffs, and 26-year-old Summer Brooke French, of Red Oak, were taken into custody on Class-B Felony charges of Possession of Meth with the Intent to Deliver (Over 5 grams). They were being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Montgomery County Communications Center and Montgomery County K-9 Unit.

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley to have surgery this week

(Radio Iowa) – Senator Chuck Grassley will undergo surgery this week after hurting his hip. Senator Grassley’s staff released a statement yesterday at about 5:30 p.m., saying Grassley is in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery. The statement did not indicate how Grassley injured his hip or what kind of surgery would be performed. Grassley sent a tweet shortly after seven o’clock last (Tuesday) night, praising Governor Reynolds for her “Condition of the State” message, but not commenting on his own condition.

Grassley has just started his 8th term in the U.S. Senate and has the most seniority of any currently serving senator. Grassley, who is 89, is also the second oldest senator.
