Iowa State women visit No. 24 West Virginia Saturday

Sports

January 25th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Iowa State women have another road game on Saturday at 24th ranked West Virginia. The Cyclones are coming off a 60-58 loss at Kansas and have dropped their last two games. ISU coach Bill Fennelly says handing West Virginia’s pressure defense will be a key.

The Cyclones beat West Virginia two weeks ago in Ames but Fennelly says winning on the road offers a big challenge.

Atlantic Girls Basketball stagger against Harlan

Sports

January 25th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Girls Basketball team experienced a rugged loss at home Thursday night to the Harlan Cyclones 69-37.

It was a very poor shooting night for the Trojans and they found themselves down in an early hole trailing by 13 at the end of the first quarter and gap increased to 17 at halftime.  Atlantic tried to rally third and cut the Cyclones lead down with five quick points to start the third.  But Harlan was prepared for the attempted comeback and continued to bury shots to keep their lead in the double digits. The Cyclones with sharp zone play forcing turnovers, pushed their lead to 18 at the end of the third. Atlantic seemed to have no answer as Harlan won the fourth quarter 15-7.

Aubrey Schwieso had a big game the Cyclones with 32 points.  Erica Rust added 14 points for Harlan with 12 of the 14 coming from inside the paint.  With the win the Cyclones improve their record to 12-2 and will move on to face Creston on the road Friday evening.

Atlantic was led in the loss by Junior Maddie Richter with 9 points.  Zoey Kirchoff contributed 6 points and Claire Pellett chipped in 6.  The Trojans record drops to 6-11 and travel to face a skilled St. Albert team on Friday.

KJAN will bring you the coverage of that game with the pregame show starting at 5:50pm.

Governor says DCI ‘didn’t check with me’ when investigating UI, ISU athletes

News, Sports

January 25th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Governor Kim Reynolds says she had no role in the investigation of alleged illegal sports betting among college athletes in Ames and Iowa City. During an interview with Radio Iowa today (Thursday), Reynolds said state law requires the Division of Criminal Investigation through the Iowa Department of Public Safety to monitor sports gaming in Iowa.

PlayReynolds said.

Last May, officials at Iowa State University and the University of Iowa announced dozens of athletes at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University had been caught up in the DCI’s investigation of underage wagering as well as betting on teams at their own schools.

Court documents released this week allege a whistleblower in the DCI says he was misled about the investigation and asked to be reassigned after another agent congratulated him for getting an athlete to confess. Reynolds declined to comment on those allegations.

PlayReynolds said.

According to Reynolds, the state’s public safety commissioner is “getting ready to provide some information” about the investigation.

Sports

January 25th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State used a late 13-1 run and beat Kansas State 78-67 as the 23rd ranked Cyclones move to 4-2 in the Big 12. The teams combined for 46 fouls and 62 free throws.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger. K-State roared back from a 12-point halftime deficit, but the Wildcats never led in suffering their second Big 12 loss.

The Cyclones host seventh ranked Kansas on Saturday.

Otzelberger says the Cyclones will need to be better on defense against the Jayhawks.

Iowa State Falls at Kansas, 60-58

Sports

January 24th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State (12-6, 6-2 Big 12) came up just short in the two-point loss of 60-58 to Kansas (10-9, 3-5 Big 12) Wednesday night. In a game of 24 lead changes and 11 ties, the contest wasn’t over until the final buzzer sounded.

It was a tight matchup throughout, with just five points being the largest lead of the game. After a tie of 23-23 at halftime, Iowa State held the lead as late as 2:15 in the fourth, but KU went back up and held it. Audi Crooks had a career night while keeping her double-figure scoring streak alive, extending it to 17 games with an all-time best 25 points. It’s the rookie’s seventh 20-point game.

Addy Brown was her usual self, dialing in 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Jalynn Bristow had the next highest total with eight, all in a row in the second quarter.

Up Next

Iowa State now heads to No. 24 West Virginia for a Jan. 27 matchup at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

Iowa’s Tom Brands on the latest in a gambling investigation

Sports

January 24th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands is telling his Hawkeye wrestlers suspended due to a gambling investigation to be ready. Brands made his comments following court filings alleging misconduct against DCI agents in an investigation that shelved a number of Iowa starters.

Back in November Brands wondered why more questions were not directed toward the initiators of the probe and why athletes at Iowa and Iowa State were singled out.

Brands would not elaborate on what he means by “be ready” and if there are still options for the suspended wrestlers to compete.

S.W.A.T. Valkyrie is confident heading into Super Regional

Sports

January 24th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The (13-5) S.W.A.T. Valkyrie team has had a lot of success this season winning multiple tournament crowns at Audubon, Pride of Iowa, and S.W.A.T. scramble. When asked about what helped brew this year’s positives results, Head Coach Tiffany South credits the environment that the Valkyrie create at each match.

Helping create such an electric and cohesive unit is no small matter. Team bonding has been a focus for coach South beginning in the offseason and up until now.

Now with the Super Regional on Friday Coach South knows she has talented wrestlers like the second-ranked wrestler at 170 pounds, according to IAWrestle, Grace Britten who won another championship at the Valkyrie Invitational. She may not be a loud leader but has impressed coach South in the way she teaches her teammates.

Behind her is another talented wrestler at 190 Ellen Gerlock who also won an individual title at the Valkyrie Invitational. Gerlock has impressed coach South with her tenacity on the mat and the drive she carries to never quit.

Looking ahead to the Super Regional on Friday, Coach South is aware of the pressure that can bring. She’s kept pressure at bay but knows of the talent on this Valkyrie squad and how all 14 could advance.

The Super Regional starts at 10am on Friday January 26th. S.W.A.T. has been assigned region 1 and will battle at Tyson Arena in Sioux City.
