Stanley’s 4 TD passes send Iowa past Minnesota 48-31

Sports

October 6th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nate Stanley overcame two costly turnovers with four touchdown passes for an aggressive Iowa offense, and the Hawkeyes used four interceptions and five sacks of Minnesota’s Zack Annexstad to beat the Gophers 48-31 on Saturday for the fourth straight time.

Stanley completed 23 of 39 attempts for 314 yards, finding T.J. Hockenson, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Nick Easley and Noah Fant for scores. Hockenson added a short touchdown run on a fake field goal to help the Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) hoist the Floyd of Rosedale bronze pig trophy for the 14th time in the last 18 meetings.

Annexstad finished 17 for 33 for 218 yards and three touchdowns, as the Gophers (3-2, 0-2) continued their growing pains on offense behind the true freshman walk-on quarterback despite some flashes of success.

Anthony Nelson had three sacks for Iowa. Freshmen Riley Moss (two) and Julius Brents (one) got their first career starts at cornerback and picked off Annexstad a combined three times. Moss, a frequent target in man-to-man coverage, had an interception in the end zone late in the second quarter that he hauled in while landing on his back.

Hockenson, who teamed with Fant to give the Hawkeyes seven receptions for 105 yards from their tight ends, supplied the most exciting and surprising play in a game that was filled with highlight-reel moments between two typically defensive-oriented teams.

On fourth-and-goal from the 4, normally conservative Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz sent the field-goal team out but ordered the swinging-gate formation with the entire line except the center shifted right. The snap went diagonally to Hockenson, who hustled in to the corner of the end zone with plenty of blocking in front of him.
Though they trailed 14-0 and 21-7, the Gophers sure didn’t wilt. The fearless Annexstad, who hobbled off the field with an apparent aggravation of his sprained ankle after one of Nelson’s sacks in the second quarter, kept winding up and going deep. Sometimes he threw too high and other times into double coverage, but he found Rashod Bateman seven times for 65 yards and two touchdowns and Tyler Johnson six times for 107 yards and a score.

Stanley made a glaring mistake on the first play after the first interception by Moss, when he rolled right and threw into traffic with 1:12 left before halftime. Jacob Huff picked the ball off at the 27 and returned it to the 6, setting up Johnson’s touchdown catch. In the third quarter, Carter Coughlin blew by left tackle Alaric Jackson for a strip-sack of Stanley that was recovered by Thomas Barber at the 10 and returned to the 3 to set up a touchdown run by Seth Green that cut Iowa’s lead to 31-24.
PILING UP THE POINTS
This was the third-highest combined score in the 112-edition series. Iowa’s victories in 1994 (49-42) and 2005 (52-28) are the only ones higher.
THE TAKEAWAY
Iowa: Following the disheartening defeat by West Division favorite Wisconsin when they held a three-point lead with less than a minute left in the game, the Hawkeyes responded authoritatively on the road against one of their chief rivals that similarly followed a let-it-all-hang-out strategy. Stanley directed each of the first two drives for touchdowns, and he produced plenty of clutch throws throughout the afternoon as the Hawkeyes moved the chains on 12 of 21 plays on third or fourth down.
Minnesota: After giving up 315 yards rushing on 37 attempts to Maryland, the Gophers defense muscled up and limited Iowa to 106 yards on the ground on 40 carries. There were several costly coverage breakdowns in an inexperienced secondary that’s now missing star safety Antoine Winfield Jr. for the season because of a foot injury, but the way the front seven played against a typically overpowering Hawkeyes attack ought to serve Minnesota well the rest of the way toward trying to reach bowl eligibility. The only game of Stanley’s three-year career when he had more attempts (41) and yards (333) was a five-touchdown game last season at Iowa State.
UP NEXT
Iowa: Plays at Indiana next Saturday.
Minnesota: Plays at No. 3 Ohio State next Saturday.

Purdy leads Iowa State over No. 25 Oklahoma State, 48-42

Sports

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Third-string quarterback Brock Purdy completed 18 of 23 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns to help lead Iowa State to a 48-42 victory over No. 25 Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Purdy, a true freshman, had played just one series before this game. But he stepped in for Zeb Noland — who was starting his fourth straight game in place of injured starter Kyle Kempt — in the contest’s second series and immediately sparked Iowa State (2-3, 1-2 Big 12 Conference). He also had a rushing touchdown.

The Cyclones entered the day ranked last in the Big 12 in both scoring (17.5 points per game, 122nd in the nation out of 130) and yards (299.5 per game, 123rd overall) but reached season highs in both categories, amassing 465 yards overall.

With Iowa State missing leading rusher David Montgomery because of an upper body injury, Purdy also led the Cyclones in rushing. He had 84 yards, including a 29-yard TD run, on 19 carries.

Tyler Cornelius was 19 of 33 passing for 289 yards and four touchdowns for Oklahoma State (4-2, 1-2), which lost its second consecutive home game. The Big 12’s leading rusher, Justice Hill, was limited to 66 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries, a 2.8-yard average. Purdy and Cornelius had one interception apiece.
TAKEAWAY
Iowa State: The Cyclones just needed an effective quarterback to get their offense going. In addition to Purdy, the Iowa State backup running backs also stepped up in Montgomery’s absence. Kene Nwangwu, who was listed as the fourth stringer, had 49 yards on 10 carries.
Oklahoma State: There is some frustration among the home fans with the offensive line’s inability to protect Cornelius adequately on passing plays, allowing seven sacks, and to block on rushes. And Hill, who rushed for 189 yards last week and topping 100 in four of the previous five games this season, went just eight yards in his longest run in this one.
UP NEXT
Iowa State: The path doesn’t get any easier for the Cyclones, as they return home to take on No. 9 West Virginia.
Oklahoma State: After losing two straight at home, the Cowboys might be glad to go back on the road next week, facing Kansas State.

Stick sparks N Dakota State to 56-31 romp over N Iowa

Sports

CEDAR CITY, Iowa (AP) — Easton Stick had two scoring runs and a touchdown pass and North Dakota State scored 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to turn a close game into a rout with a 56-31 thumping of Northern Iowa in Missouri Valley Football Conference play on Saturday.

The Bison (5-0, 2-0), the top-ranked FCS team in the coaches’ poll, trailed the 22nd-ranked Panthers (2-3, 1-1) by three points entering the fourth quarter. That’s when Stick took over the game.

NDSU’s senior quarterback started the scoring burst with a 75-yard strike to Bruce Anderson on the first play of a drive just 11 seconds into the fourth quarter for a 35-31 lead. Stick added a 1-yard TD plunge and a 31-yard TD run on the Bison’s next two possessions. Adam Cofield added a 25-yard TD run to cap the scoring as NDSU finished with TDs on all four fourth-quarter possessions.

Stick completed just nine passes for 179 yards, but four of them went for TDs. He added 35 yards rushing. Eli Dunne passed for 362 yards and three TDs for the Panthers.

Drake dominates Butler 36-6 behind Kraemer’s 3 TDs

Sports

October 6th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Grant Kraemer threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns and Drake dominated Butler 36-6 on Saturday. Drake (3-1, 2-0 Pioneer Football League) took a 7-0 lead when Kraemer connected with Devin Cates for a 42-yard score, and later, Braeden Hartwig plunged in from 3-yards out to make it 14-0. That score was set up when Will Warner intercepted Will Marty and returned it 45 yards to the Butler 3-yard line. In the third quarter, Hartwig ran it in from a yard out to make it 21-0.

Drake now has scored a combined 129 points in its last three games with Kraemer throwing for 12 touchdowns in the three contests. Defensively, Drake has surrendered just 19 points in the same three-game span.
Marty threw for 134 yards and a touchdown to Stephen Dennis for the lone Butler (3-2, 1-1) score. The Bulldogs did manage to dominate time of possession and held the ball for 41½ minutes.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Much of the success Iowa has had over time can be pinned on superior strength at the line of scrimmage. The Hawkeyes have long more than held their own in the trenches, and this point-of-attack prowess has been on full display so far this season. That’s another reminder for rival Minnesota of how much work is left to do in building the program under coach P.J. Fleck. The Gophers were outmanned on the lines in their last game at Maryland. They host the Hawkeyes for homecoming this weekend. (Pre-game today at 12:30-p.m., Kick-off at 2:30 on KJAN)

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — It could come down to defense on Saturday for No. 25 Oklahoma State when they face Iowa State at home. The Cyclones’ offense has struggled this season, ranking last in the Big 12 in both scoring and yards this season. So if Oklahoma State can unleash the pressure of its potent pass-rush that leads the nation in sacks, they should be able to prevail.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Winless Nebraska faces another tough challenge with a trip to No. 16 Wisconsin this weekend. The Cornhuskers are 0-4, having lost a program-record eight straight going back to last season. But coach Scott Frost says how his players respond to the hard times will make things sweeter when the team gets better. The rested Badgers are coming off a bye week. They feature the nation’s leading rusher, Jonathan Taylor, who is averaging 157 yards per game.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska running back Greg Bell has left the team and received a release from his scholarship. An athletic department spokesman said Bell didn’t make the trip for the Cornhuskers’ game at No. 16 Wisconsin on Saturday and planned to transfer. Bell started the first three games but lost his job to Devine Ozigbo last week.
