Atlantic Girls find momentum in win over Red Oak

Sports

January 31st, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Trojans Girl’s Basketball team looked impressive with a 60-27 road victory over the Red Oak Tigers on Tuesday night. Paytn Harter had 20 and Makenna Schroeder had 13 to help the Trojans get the win.

Atlantic started slow but got the last bucket of the first quarter to take a 18-16 lead. A couple of threes by Schroeder and another by junior Maddie Richter helped the Trojans push the lead to 16 by halftime 35-19. In the second half the Trojans stayed focused on feeding Katrina Williams the ball inside the paint scoring eight on the night, and it helped the Trojans blow the game open to a 48-21 lead.  In the fourth quarter Red Oak continued to miss shots and only scored four in the entire eight minutes.

Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason said it was nice to see everyone respond after starting the game slow.

The Trojans will be back home on Friday night to face the Denison-Schleswig Lady Monarchs. Coach Vargason will have his teams focus on executing their game plan well.

We’ll have coverage on KJANTV with pregame at 5:50pm and Tip-off at 6:00pm.

Trojans Basketball slip against Red Oak

Sports

January 30th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Boys Basketball dropped a tightly contested game losing 64-56 loss at Red Oak on Tuesday night.  The Trojans managed to keep it within five throughout the entire first quarter but could never take the lead thanks to the sharp layups from Hunter Gilleland.  The Tigers then took advantage of the hot hands from Max Devries who dropped four triples in the second quarter and gave Red Oak a 7-point lead at half 33-26.  Atlantic then grabbed the lead to start the fourth quarter but lost it midway through after a few missed threes and accurate shooting from Red Oak on the charity stripe going 10-13 to secure the victory.

Reflecting on the game Head Coach Dalton Franken explained how effective Red Oak’s defensive strategy was.

Red Oak was led by Max Devries with 21 points and Brayden Sifford with 14.  Atlantic got 22 points from Colton Rasmussen in the loss.

The Tigers improve to 8-9 with the win and head to Missouri Valley on Thursday. Atlantic’s record is now 5-11 with the loss and continue their road trip to Perry on Thursday. As much as a loss stings, Coach Franken is determined to stay focused and plan for the next two games.

Tipoff against Perry is set for 6:00 p.m.

Sports

January 30th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

Indiana outscored Iowa 8-0 to finish the game in a 74-68 win in Bloomington. The Hawkeyes had roared back from a 17-point first half deficit to lead it late.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes survived a bad start to make a run in the second half.

The Hoosiers outrebounded the Hawkeyes 45-32 and had several key offensive rebounds at crunch time. Benn Krikke and Owen Freeman combined for only five rebounds.

Payton Sandfort led Iowa with 26 points. The Hawkeyes are 4-6 in the Big Ten and host Ohio State Friday night.

Northern Iowa men visit Bradley Wednesday night

Sports

January 30th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Northern Iowa men take a 6-4 Missouri Valley Conference record on the road to Bradley Wednesday night. The Braves had a nine-game win streak snapped last Saturday with an overtime loss at Valley leader Indiana State and Panther coach Ben Jacobson says the return from injury of leading scorer Connor Hickman has been a factor.

Jacobson says Bradley’s size makes them tough defensively at the rim.

Bradley is 7-3 in the Valley.
