Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns general manager John Dorsey will see his past, present and future on Sunday. Dorsey, who has had perhaps his roughest week since coming to Cleveland, will get an up-close look at the Kansas City Chiefs, a team he helped build before being fired in 2017. Dorsey was responsible for drafting many of K.C.’s top players, including star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield will renew their college rivalry for the first time as pros when the Kansas City Chiefs visit the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The previous time the two quarterbacks squared off they re-wrote the NCAA record book. Mayfield threw seven TD passes as Oklahoma beat Texas Tech and Mahomes 66-59 in 2016. Mahomes leads the NFL with 26 TD passes this season with the high-flying Chiefs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz will return to Cleveland on Sunday with the snap streak he started with the Browns intact. Schwartz has played nearly 7,000 straight snaps covering more than 100 games, and is currently helping Patrick Mahomes become one of the league’s most prolific quarterbacks.

Exira-EHK and Fremont-Mills set for playoff showdown

Sports

The Exira-EHK Spartans (9-1) are set to host the Fremont-Mills Knights (9-1) in the Class 8-Man Quarterfinals on Friday night in Exira and we’lll have coverage on KJAN. It’s a rematch of the opening game of the season in which the Spartans were able to come away with a 45-27 victory. Both teams are very different from that week one match-up and Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen has been impressed with what the Knights have done since that game.

Fremont-Mills has a dynamic backfield with Seth Malcom rushing for 1,012 yards and 21 scores, Jaeger Powers gaining 681 yards with 14 scores, and quarterback Mason Vanatta adding 657 rushing yards and 17 more scores. Coach Petersen said they will need to get a lot of guys flowing to the football to slow down the Knights.

Fremont-Mills Head Coach Jeremy Christensen said it is a unique situation playing a team again in the quarterfinals that they saw to start the season with so much growth in between.

Exira-EHK has been able to spread the ball out to multiple weapons despite some late season injury issues. Cole Burmeister leads the way with 820 yards rushing for 18 touchdowns and 803 receiving yards with 10 more scores. Coach Christensen said it will be tough to stop the Spartans’ offense but hopes his team can win the battle up front.

The Spartans and Knights are set for a 7:00pm kickoff and we will start our pregame coverage at 6:00pm on KJAN. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call from the top of the hill in Exira. Catch the game on-air, online, on the web app, and audio streaming to our Facebook page as well. Jim Field will be in Avoca to provide updates throughout the night of the AHSTW vs. Newman Catholic Quarterfinal game in Class A.
