Iowa beats UConn for 2K Classic title

Sports

November 17th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — Iowa learned a lot last season. The Hawkeyes are putting those lessons to good use right now. Tyler Cook scored 26 points, Luka Garza had 22 and Iowa beat Connecticut 91-72 in the 2K Classic championship game on Friday night.

The Hawkeyes went 14-19 last season, losing to Michigan in the Big Ten tournament. But they shot 51 percent (29 for 57) from the field while improving to 4-0 this year. Cook said the biggest difference is the team is more together for this campaign. “We’re more connected on both ends of the floor,” he said. “And we’re playing for one another and our coaching staff and our program with more pride than we did a year ago.”

Garza was named MVP of the tournament. He also joined Cook, UConn’s Eric Cobb, Oregon’s Bol Bol and Syracuse’s Jalen Carey on the all-tournament team. Bol led No. 13 Oregon to an 80-65 victory over No. 15 Syracuse in the consolation game. He finished with 26 points and nine rebounds on his 19th birthday.

Iowa improved to 3-1 all-time against UConn. It was the first meeting between the schools since Iowa’s 70-68 win on Nov. 11, 1999, also at Madison Square Garden.

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) — Devon Goodman scored a career-high 27 points, and Penn rallied in the second half to defeat Northern Iowa 78-71 Friday at the Paradise Jam tournament. Down 41-34 with 18:49 left, the Quakers (4-0) fought back to tie the score twice before pulling ahead for good at 58-56 on Bryce Washington’s 3-pointer with 8:56 remaining. Penn would go on to extend its lead to seven points three times in the final 2 minutes.

Washington and Antonio Woods finished with 12 points each, and AJ Brodeur had 11 points for the Quakers, who advance into Sunday’s semifinal round at the University of the Virgin Islands’ Sports and Fitness Center.

AJ Green finished with 21 points, and Wyatt Lohaus and Luke McDonnell added 11 points each for the Panthers (1-2), who will play in the consolation round Saturday.

Iowa hunting, fishing and trapping license fees to increase

(Radio Iowa) — The fees for hunting, fishing and trapping licenses in Iowa will soon increase. A legislative committee has given final approval to the license fee increases, which were proposed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources staff. Bruce Trautman, the acting director of the Department of Natural Resources, says “Generally speaking, it’s about a 17 percent in those fees, so it’s a modest increase that is certainly going to cover some of our critical needs we have within the wildlife bureau, the fisheries bureau and also our conservation officers.”

It’s been 15 years since the state license fee for fishing was raised, as Republican lawmakers have vowed NOT to raise state taxes OR fees. So…Iowa legislators recently handed over authority to D-N-R staff to set hunting, fishing and trapping license fees. The fees go into the state’s Fish and Wildlife Fund and are used on staff salaries and to do things like improve wildlife habitat and run the state’s fish hatcheries. Trautman says the new fees won’t take effect until next year. “If we don’t have any reductions in the number of licenses — when you raise something, you take a bit of a risk (and) there might be a few folks dropping out — we’re anticipating about a $4.5 million increase,” Trautman says.

There’s been a growing reliance on FEES to run the D-N-R. The amount of GENERAL state tax dollars budgeted for the agency is less than half of what it was a decade ago. Sporting groups lobbied for the increase in hunting, fishing and trapping license fees for several years.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — The Iowa Hawkeyes look to slow the Illini running game and take advantage of one of the nation’s worst defenses to end a three-game skid. The Hawkeyes (6-4, 3-4 Big Ten) travel to Champaign on Saturday. Illinois (4-6, 2-5) will depend on tailback Reggie Corbin has rushed for 1,011 yards this season, averaging 8.9 yards per carry, and has nine touchdowns. He left last week’s game against Nebraska with a foot injury, but is expected to play Saturday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Texas Tech seems to relish playing on the road, and the Red Raiders have a visit to Kansas State looming on Saturday. They need to win at least one of their final two games to reach six wins and qualify for a bowl game. The Wildcats also need to win and then beat Iowa State in their regular-season finale to become bowl eligible.

UNDATED (AP) — The four teams fighting for two spots in the Big 12 championship game are led by quarterbacks who’ve proven they can take over a game. Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray, West Virginia’s Will Grier, Iowa State’s Brock Purdy and Sam Ehlinger of Texas have been impressive this season. They could determine which teams make it to the Dec. 1 title game in Arlington, Texas.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s offense has generated more than 450 yards in seven straight games. If the Cornhuskers put up the same numbers against Michigan State’s stout defense, it will be another sign first-year coach Scott Frost’s up-tempo spread option is a force in the Big Ten just as it was when he was at Central Florida in the American Athletic Conference. The Spartans rank first in the nation in rushing defense and allow fewer than 20 points per game.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Chiefs are visiting the Rams in one of the biggest games of the NFL season and a possible Super Bowl preview. The game was originally scheduled for Mexico City before poor field conditions at Azteca Stadium prompted the NFL to move the game to California on six days’ notice. Two offenses averaging 33 points per game have never met this late in a regular season, and the game is only the fifth meeting since 1970 between two one-loss or unbeaten teams in Week 11 or later.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ defense has been maligned all season, but one area that has stood out has been their ability to pressure the quarterback. Dee Ford has nine sacks, and the Chiefs have 31 as a team, helping to take some pressure off a mishmash defensive backfield.

Jordan Bohannon scored 16 points to lead Iowa to a 77-69 upset of No. 13 Oregon in the second semifinal of the 2K Classic on Thursday night.

Luka Garza added 12, and Ryan Kriener finished with 11.

The Hawkeyes (3-0) will play UConn in the championship game tomorrow, while Oregon (2-1) will meet No. 15 Syracuse in the consolation game. Connecticut upset Syracuse, 83-76, in the first game.

Iowa led throughout. The Hawkeyes jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first 2:36, and enjoyed a 39-28 advantage at halftime. The lead grew to 13, 52-39, on Kriener’s dunk with 12:19 left in the second half.

Oregon closed with seven, 76-69, in the final 23.6 seconds, but that was as close as the Ducks would come.

Ehab Amin led all players with 25 points. Bol Bol chipped in with 14, and Victor Bailey Jr. had 12.
