Fast start propels Exira-EHK past Woodbine in district hoops

Sports

February 18th, 2023 by admin

Exira-EHK opened up their Class 1A District Semifinal against Woodbine with a 17-0 run and never looked back, ultimately prevailing 70-50. After the quick start the Tigers could never really seize much momentum back in their favor. A six point spurt to start the second half got Woodbine within 13 but they would never get closer. The Spartans advance to the District 15 Final on Tuesday night against West Harrison in Harlan. Spartan senior Trey Petersen talked about what was working at the start.

Petersen hit 5 threes in the game and led the Spartans with 18 points. He said the shot just felt good and credited his teammates for getting him open looks.

The defensive effort was pretty solid for the Spartans as well, forcing 9 first half turnovers for the Tigers. Petersen said after losing in their last meeting to Woodbine they wanted to emphasize playing tough defense.

Cash Emgarten added 14 points and Aiden Flathers and Derrek Kommes each added 12 for Sparty, who improved to 19-4 on the season. Petersen said they’re excited to get the chance to face the Hawkeyes again.

Woodbine was led by 22 points from sophomore Carter Gruver. The Tigers finish the season at 16-7.
