AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State insisted on playing 12 games, cycling through a pair of FCS opponents before settling on tiny Drake. That decision nearly resulted in the most embarrassing loss in school history. David Montgomery ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns and No. 24 Iowa State survived a near-upset by the non-scholarship Bulldogs on Saturday, winning 27-24.

Brock Purdy had 153 yards passing and a TD and ran for another score for the Cyclones (8-4), who fought through persistent rain and a muddy, torn-up field for their seventh win in eight games.
It hardly felt like a victory, though, against a team that agreed to play this makeup game only two weeks ago, and Iowa State coach Matt Campbell blamed the close call on execution instead of effort.
“I don’t know that we played with great detail on a surface like that, where every inch matters,” Campbell said.

It was so muddy that Iowa State’s band wasn’t allowed to perform at halftime. Still, the Cyclones looked uninspired at best — and it might have made them less desirable when bowls make their picks on Sunday. “If it does, so be it. All we can be is us,” Campbell said.

The Atlantic/CAM Wrestling team took third at the Joe Fitch Wrestling Tournament at Humboldt on Friday. The Trojans finished with four champions and three runners-up. Emmetsburg was the team champion with 281 points, followed by Humboldt (265.5), Atlantic/CAM (256), Sheldon-South O’Brien (175) and Forest City (121) the top five.

Chase McLaren won his fourth title in four years at the Joe Fitch Tournament by winning at 138. Connor Pellett took the 160 crown. Kenny Jimerson won at 170, and Cale Roller took the 220 title.

Aybren Moore (113), Joe Weaver (120), and Steele McLaren (126) were all runners-up.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa junior tight end Noah Fant says he is leaving school early to enter the NFL draft. Fant announced on his Instagram page that he intends to skip his final season of eligibility to turn pro. Fant, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, also told the Omaha World-Herald that he plans to skip Iowa’s upcoming bowl game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs released running back Kareem Hunt after video surfaced that showed the NFL’s reigning rushing champion knocking over and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel hallway in February. The team issued a statement shortly after the NFL had placed Hunt on its Commissioner Exemption List that said the running back had lied when asked about the incident by team officials.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Left-hander Chasen Shreve and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a $900,000, one-year contract. The 28-year-old was 3-4 with a 3.93 ERA and one save in a career-high 60 appearances this year for the New York Yankees and the Cardinals, who acquired him on July 28.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Left-hander Chasen Shreve and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a $900,000, one-year contract. Shreve can earn an additional $400,000 in performance bonuses for games pitched as part of the deal announced Friday: $50,000 each for 35, 40, 45 and 50; $75,000 apiece for 55 and 60; and $50,000 for 65.

The 28-year-old was 3-4 with a 3.93 ERA and one save in a career-high 60 appearances this year for the New York Yankees and the Cardinals, who acquired him on July 28 along with right-hander Giovanny Gallegos for first baseman Luke Voit and $1 million in international signing bonus pool allocation. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs released running back Kareem Hunt on Friday night after video surfaced that showed the NFL’s reigning rushing champion knocking over and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel hallway in February. The team issued a statement shortly after the NFL had placed Hunt on its Commissioner Exemption List that said the running back lied when asked about the incident by team officials. The team said “the video today confirms that fact. We are releasing Kareem immediately.”

Hunt was at the Chiefs’ facility earlier Friday in preparation for Sunday’s trip to Oakland, but he was excused and sent home shortly after TMZ posted the video online. It shows Hunt being restrained several times by friends before pushing a woman to the ground, where he proceeds to kick her.
Police were called to the scene during the Feb. 10 incident, no charges were filed. The Chiefs and the NFL have been aware of Hunt’s incident since it occurred, but much like the case involving former Ravens running back Ray Rice, the shocking video brought a new dimension to the case. It showed Hunt lunging toward a woman and several others in the hotel hallway, and the second-year pro being restrained several times before knocking two people down.

While no charges were filed from the altercation, two police reports were created. Hunt is listed as the suspect in one of them and a woman, Abigail Ottinger, is the suspect in the other one. Hunt also was involved in a June incident, according to TMZ, in which he allegedly punched a man at an Ohio resort. The man Hunt struck declined to press charges.

Hunt led the NFL in rushing as a rookie with 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns in helping Kansas City make the playoffs. He had run for 824 yards this season, with seven touchdowns passing and seven more receiving, in helping the Chiefs to a 9-2 start and a stranglehold on the AFC West.
Spencer Ware is expected to take over as the lead running back.

Trice scored 20 points, including a crucial 3 with 20 seconds left, and 22nd-ranked Wisconsin held off No. 14 Iowa 72-66 on Friday night in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Ethan Happ had 13 points, seven boards and five assists for the Badgers (7-1), who handed the Hawkeyes their first loss of the season in a back-and-forth affair.

The Hawkeyes, much like they did in Tuesday’s 69-68 win over Pittsburgh, have shown the ability to fight when things don’t always go their way. Iowa center Luka Garza had 11 points but just three rebounds, and Bohannon finished with 11 points for the Hawkeyes. Iowa had just nine assists on 23 made baskets.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Learfield Sports and some of its Iowa affiliates will not air a radio ad supporting suspended Iowa play-by-play broadcaster Gary Dolphin. Loyal Hawkeye Fans, Inc. is sponsoring the pro-Dolphin ad that will run on several stations during his two-game suspension. Learfield suspended Dolphin for comments directed at Hawkeyes guard Maishe Dailey that inadvertently made it to air during Tuesday’s game against Pitt.

Hawkeye booster Nick Ryan says he’s behind the pro-Dolphin group and his family’s putting $12,000 into the campaign. The ad calls the broadcaster a Hawkeye “down to his core,” notes that he’s apologized and says it’s time for him “to get back behind the mic.”

A Learfield representative told a media buyer that it appreciates the “immense passion” for Dolphin but that it’s unable to consider the spot for broadcast. The ad includes play-by-play audio that Learfield says the group doesn’t have permission to use. Ryan says some Learfield affiliates have also declined the ad.
