Iowa State Wins 2018 NIVC, Schaben named MVP

Sports

December 12th, 2018 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State claimed the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) title with a 3-0 (25-21, 30-28, 25-16) sweep of Tulane Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The win gives ISU a record of 21-13 to finish the season, with the Cyclones claiming their last nine matches. Tulane finishes the season at 29-9.

Iowa State was led by NIVC All-Tournament Team MVP Jess Schaben, who posted 14 kills and 10 digs for her fifth-straight double-double. Josie Herbst finished with 14 kills at .414 hitting and Eleanor Holthaus, another All-Tournament Team member, had 13 kills at .522 hitting.

Set One: Iowa State 25 Tulane 21

Iowa State broke open a close set with a 4-0 run to get ahead 13-7. The Cyclones offense stayed balanced to get ahead with four Cyclones recording kills and hitting over .400 to build the advantage. The Green Wave did good work behind the service line to bring the Cyclones within two at 16-14, but the Cyclones strung three in a row to get back ahead by five at 21-16. The Cyclones hit .382 in the first, led by five kills from Eleanor Holthaus. ISU moved ahead 1-0 when TU’s Lexie Douglas hit it into the net at 25-21 ISU.

Set Two: Iowa State 30 Tulane 28

The Cyclones attack got off to a slow start, with three-straight hitting errors allowing the Green Wave to move ahead 6-3. Hannah Bailey’s trip behind the service line resulted in a 3-0 run to tie the match at 10-10 on a block by Holthaus and Candelaria Herrera. ISU moved back ahead at 13-12 when Herrera put down a kill on the slide. Tulane moved back ahead at 18-17 when Schaben fired long, but ISU was able to get the lead again at 22-21 when Erika Hansel hit it into the net. Tulane got to set point first at 24-23, but Iowa State was able to survive five set points to stay in the set. The Cyclones got to a set point at 29-28 on a Josie Herbst kill to the back corner, which ISU put away on first asking when Schaben pulled out a roll shot from the back row to take it 30-28.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 Tulane 16

A 5-0 run keyed by a pair of Herrera solo stuffs allowed ISU to get ahead 8-3. It was all Iowa State from there, as the Green Wave attack was smothered for the remainder of the evening. The Green Wave was restricted to .000 hitting in the final set. Match point came up at 24-16 and was put away on the first asking via Holthaus’ 13th kill of the night at 25-16, Cyclones.

Player of the Match

Jess Schaben. In her 120th and final match as a Cyclone, Schaben put up yet another strong performance, finishing with 14 kills and 10 digs for her fifth-straight double-double and 20th of the season. The NIVC MVP, Schaben finished the tournament with an NIVC-record 99 kills.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse has rejoined his team in Los Angeles after the death of his 94-year-old mother. Nurse says his mother, Marcella Nurse, died in Iowa, where he was born in the city of Carroll.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Cornhuskers are a hungry and humble basketball team. Hungry because they just missed out on making the NCAA Tournament last season despite winning 22 games, setting a school record with 13 conference wins and finishing fourth in the Big Ten. Humble because for all the success they’ve had getting out to an 8-2 start, they still have a couple disappointing losses to remind them they aren’t good enough to win most nights unless they bring their best effort.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals and speedy outfielder Billy Hamilton have finalized a $5.25 million contract that includes up to $1 million in performance bonuses and a mutual option for 2020. His deal calls for a $4.25 million salary next year and a $7.5 million mutual option with a $1 million buyout He can earn $100,000 each for making 325 plate appearances and every additional 25 through 550.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill returned from a wrist injury and a heel injury to help Kansas City beat the Ravens in overtime last week. In doing so, Hill proved he has more in his arsenal than simply world-class speed.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Melvin Gordon wants to suit up for the Los Angeles Chargers’ biggest game of the season Thursday at Kansas City, but he says his status will likely not be decided until 90 minutes before kickoff. The fourth-year running back was listed as limited on the team’s Tuesday practice report, which was the first time he has participated in a practice since the injury.

Raptors coach Nick Nurse’s 94-year-old mother dies in western IA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse has rejoined his team in Los Angeles after the death of his 94-year-old mother. Nurse says his mother, Marcella Nurse, died Monday in Iowa, where he was born in the city of Carroll. He plans to coach tonight (Wednesday night) at Golden State before returning to Iowa.

In June, Nurse was promoted from assistant to head coach of the Raptors after Dwane Casey was fired. He has led the team to a record of 21-7, best in the NBA. “She had a big impact because she had nine of us and I was the last one,” the 51-year-old coach said. “Lots of games — 94 years, nine kids and about 80,000 games watched are her final stats.”

Marcella Nurse lived in Carroll for more than 60 years. She endured a suspenseful wait in June before Nurse was elevated to head coach of the Raptors. “The anticipation was just something you wouldn’t imagine,” she told the Daily Times Herald newspaper in Carroll. Marcella Nurse followed her youngest son’s playing exploits in basketball, football, baseball and track and field. “He was always busy, trying to learn about all kinds of sports,” she said.

Marcella Nurse was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice. He died in July 2015 at age 89.

3rd quarter barrage leads Atlantic past Glenwood in boys hoops

Podcasts, Sports

December 11th, 2018 by admin

The Atlantic boys basketball team climbed out of a 6-point halftime deficit to Glenwood by erupting for a *29-8 advantage in the third quarter Tuesday night. The Trojans were efficient down the stretch and secured an 85-74 victory over the Class 3A 8th rated Rams. The Trojans led 18-16 at the end of the first quarter but the Rams grabbed back some momentum in the second. A shot at the buzzer before halftime by Cade Van Ness gave Glenwood a 41-35 halftime lead.

Halftime would flip a switch for the Trojans. Atlantic got hot from downtown and forced some timely turnovers in the third quarter to grab a lead that would grow to as much as 15. Chase Mullenix hit a three late in the quarter and Atlantic got the ball back with just a few seconds left in the period. Skyler Handlos fresh off the bench nailed a three from the right side at the horn to give Atlantic a ton of momentum heading into the fourth. The Trojans hit 6 threes off the hands of five different players in that big third quarter run.

Glenwood would get it all the way back to a three point game late in the fourth but Atlantic secured the win at the foul line. The Trojans went 13 of 17 at the charity stripe in the fourth, including six straight makes from Chase Mullenix.

Chase Mullenix was the leading scorer with 31 points on the night for the Trojans. Tyler Moen dropped in 23 and Logan Reilly had 11 for Atlantic. With the win Atlantic moves to 3-2 on the season and will host Shenandoah on Friday night.

Christian Stanislav led the Rams with 34 points and Zach Carr had 15. Glenwood falls to 3-2 and will host Denison-Schleswig on Friday.
