Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson is leaving school early for the NFL. The Hawkeyes announced that Hockenson, a redshirt sophomore, will join teammates Noah Fant, Anthony Nelson and Amani Hooker as early entrees in the draft. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Hockenson won the Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end, in 2018.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Glynn Watson Jr. scored 15 points and Isaiah Copeland added 14 to help Nebraska upset No. 25 Indiana 66-51. The Cornhuskers have won two straight overall and three straight in the series. They never trailed Monday. Romeo Langford had 18 points and Juwan Morgan finished with 17 on a miserable shooting night for the Hoosiers, who have lost three in a row. Indiana’s 10-game home winning streak also ended.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Break out the parkas for Sunday night’s AFC title game at Arrowhead Stadium. The National Weather Service is projecting an arctic blast to settle over Kansas City for the Chiefs’ game against the New England Patriots. Temperatures at kickoff could range from 10 degrees to well below zero, potentially making it the coldest game in Arrowhead Stadium history.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid is trying to turn the page on a resume filled with postseason flops this season. No coach has ever been in more playoff games without winning a Super Bowl, let alone reached just one of them. But if the Chiefs beat the New England Patriots on Sunday, it would be a big step toward shoving all those disappointments into the shadows.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Following a regular season in which the Patriots lost five games, Bill Belichick recognized the need for his team to lean even more on its collective offensive strength. The result has been a team that has rediscovered its ability to run the football that doesn’t rely so heavily on huge games from 41-year-old Tom Brady. It will be needed to upend a formidable Kansas City team in the AFC championship game.

UNDATED (AP) — C.J. Anderson is shining in the playoffs just as he did in 2015 for the Denver Broncos. Anderson has topped 100 yards in all three of his games for the Rams and now he gives Los Angeles a 1-2 punch with Todd Gurley back healthy. Anderson was jettisoned by the Broncos, Panthers and Raiders this season, three teams sitting out this playoff party.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Megan Gustafson had 34 points, 13 rebounds and four assists for her nation-leading 15th double-double of the season and No. 22 Iowa beat No. 23 Minnesota 81-63 on Monday night. It was Gustafson’s 70th career double-double. She was 16 of 22 from the field and also had three blocks. Tania Davis added 21 points with seven assists for Iowa (12-4, 3-2 Big Ten). Hannah Stewart added 10 points and nine rebounds and Kathleen Doyle had 11 points, seven assists and a career-high four steals.

Iowa used a 24-9 third quarter to pull away as Minnesota was held to 23 second-half points. Kenisha Bell scored 22 points for Minnesota (12-4, 1-4), which has lost four straight under first-year coach Lindsay Whalen. Taiye Bello notched her seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. It was the Gophers’ second loss in 12 games this season at Williams Arena.

Hockenson joins list of Hawkeyes leaving for NFL

Sports

January 14th, 2019 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa –– Three additional University of Iowa football players have declared for the NFL Draft, forfeiting their remaining college eligibility. Juniors Amani Hooker and Anthony Nelson, and sophomore T.J. Hockenson announced their intentions recently following Iowa’s Outback Bowl victory. Junior tight end Noah Fant declared in December.

“Amani, Anthony and T.J. have been outstanding members of our team on the field and as leaders within the program,” said head football coach Kirk Ferentz. “While we are disappointed to see them leave, we recognize this is an important decision and we wish them the very best as they pursue the draft.”

The Iowa football program under Ferentz has sent 170 players to the NFL, including 66 draft picks and 104 free agents. At least one Hawkeye has been selected in the NFL Draft every year since 1978. In the past 11 seasons, 40 Hawkeyes have been taken in the NFL Draft, including four first round selections.

Hockenson and Fant are both tight ends, Hooker is a defensive back and Nelson a defensive end. Nelson has played three seasons after redshirting in 2015. Hooker played as a true freshman. Hockenson redshirted in 2016 before seeing action the past two seasons.

Iowa finished the 2018 season 9-4 overall and 25th in the final Associated Press rankings following a 27-22 win over No. 18 Mississippi State at the 2019 Outback Bowl. The Hawkeyes have posted a 37-16 mark over the past four seasons.
