Iowa State women beat No. 15 Texas to win Big 12 Tournament

The Iowa State women won the Big 12 Tournament for the first time since 2001. The Cyclones outscored 15th ranked Texas 21-12 in the third quarter to beat the Longhorns 61-51 in Kansas City.

That’s ISU coach Bill Fennelly. The Cyclones held Texas to 24 second half points and pulled away for the win.

Ashley Joens scored 28 points and had 10 rebounds in being named the tournament most outstanding player.

Drake finishes MVC Tourney run with Championship win over Belmont

The Drake Bulldogs defeated the Belmont Bruins 89-71 on Sunday to win the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs won the tournament title for the first time since 2018.

Maggie Bair had 19 points, 15 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 9 assists to lead the Bulldogs. Anna Miller added 15 points and Grace Berg dropped in 14.

Drake made 18 of 19 free throws led by Katie Dinnebier’s 13 of 14 effort. The Bulldogs are headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Drake improved to 22-9.

Belmont saw their 16-game win streak snapped and fell to 23-11 on the season.

Drake drew a 12-seed for the NCAA Tournament and will face 5th-seeded Louisville in their opening game. Drake will play in Austin, TX at the University of Texas’ Moody Center.

The Iowa State women’s basketball team out-dueled Oklahoma to reach the Big 12 Tournament Championship on Saturday. The Cyclones outscored the Sooners 24-14 in the third quarter to take command of the game.

Ashley Joens led the way with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Lexi Donarski dropped in 20 points and Nyamer Diew splashed in 19.

The Cyclones improved to 21-9 and moved on to face Texas in the Big 12 Tournament Championship game on Sunday.

NANCY DeRUBY, 64, of Bellevue, NE,. died Friday, March 10, 2023, at the Hospice House of Omaha. Funeral services for NANCY DeRUBY will be held 11-a.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at the St. Boniface Parish Hall in Westphalia. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the St. Boniface Parish Hall will be held Wednesday, from 9-until 11-a.m.

Burial is in the St. Boniface Cemetery at Westphalia.

NANCY DeRUBY is survived by:

Her husband – Tom DeRuby, of Bellevue, NE.

Her brothers – “Larry” (Vicki) Schmitz, Norman (Gloria) Schmitz, and Roger (Judy) Schmitz, all of Westphalia; Marvin (Joan) Schmitz, of Harlan; Jim (Vicki) Schmitz of Omaha, NE;

Her sisters – Linda (late James) Bender, of Lambertville, MI; Velma (Bruce) Arkfeld, of Defiance; Doris (Lenny) Schmitz, of Harlan.

Her in-laws, many other relatives and friends.

(Update) Names released in Friday night triple fatal crash

(Walcott, Iowa) – The Iowa State Patrol, Sunday afternoon, released the names of the persons who died in a head-on crash on Interstate 80 in eastern Iowa, Friday night. Three died, and other person was injured.Those who died at the scene were identified as 46-year-old Tameka D. Paney, of Rock Island, Illinois, 34-year-old Jessica E. Carr, of Fresno, CA., and 23-year-old Brina Y. Anderson-Yoder, of Cedar Rapids.  The Patrol says Carr and Anderson were not wearing a seat belt. Paney was wearing her seat belt, but her injuries were still fatal.

29-year-old Andrea Rene Smith, of Davenport, was wearing a seat belt. She was injured in the crash and transported to Genesis East Hospital.

The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened at around 11:15-p.m. north of Walcott, in Scott County. The report says a 2014 VW driven by Tameka Paney, and a 2014 Chevy driven by Andrew Smith, collided head-on in the inside land of I-80 at mile marker 284.

The direction of travel for each vehicle was undetermined and under investigation.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Davenport Police, Iowa DOT, Walcott Fire and Medic EMS assisted at the scene.

Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputy struck on I-80 Saturday afternoon

(Adel, Iowa) – Sheriff’s officials in Dallas County, Sunday, reported on social media, that at around 4:20-p.m. on Saturday, March 11th, 2023, Dallas County Deputy Brandon Bjoin was assisting a motorist who had become stuck in the median at the 102.5 mile marker on Interstate 80. Authorities says there were several different accidents on Interstate 80 at this time.

Deputy Bjoin was speaking with the person who got stuck, when an accident behind him occurred, unbeknownst to him. As a result of that accident, a black suburban entered into the median where Deputy Bjoin was standing and sideswiped him, striking his right arm and knocking him to the ground. The motorist Deputy Bjoin was assisting was not hit.

Deputy Bjoin was transported by Dallas County EMS to Methodist Hospital in downtown Des Moines. Deputy Bjoin was released from Methodist with bruising to his right arm. The Sheriff’s Department says Deputy Bjoin was extremely lucky that he did not suffer a major injury or death. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office is grateful for the rapid response by Dallas County EMS, the Stuart Police Department, the Earlham Police Department, Earlham Fire Department, and the Iowa State Patrol.

“We hope this serves as a reminder to all motorists to slow down when you see flashing lights and to use caution in winter driving situations. “

2 accidents in Montgomery County, Saturday afternoon

(Red Oak, Iowa) – Sheriff’s officials in Montgomery County report there were two separate accidents Saturday afternoon, with two injured in one of the crashes. At around 1:45-p.m., a single-vehicle accident happened on Highway 34 near 210th Street. Alexander Guy, of Villisca, was traveling westbound in a 2006 Honda Accord, when the car began to lose control and entered the south ditch. Alexander and an 11-year-old male passenger were transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, for treatment of minor injuries.

And, at about 1:41-p.m. Saturday, Montgomery County Deputies came upon an accident on the Nishnabotna River bridge on Highway 48, east of Elliott. The driver of the 2015 Chrysler 200, 55-year-old Sherri K. Turner, of Elliott, was traveling west when her car lost traction due to the snow and slush covered road. The vehicle slid across the eastbound lane of traffic and following Turner’s attempt to avoid contact with the southeast bridge guardrail, the car crossed to the northwest and hit a concrete wall on the north side of the bridge.The right front wheel and entire right side of the vehicle were damaged.

The damage left the vehicle inoperable and located near the middle of the bridge deck surface. Damage the car was estimated at $10,000. No injuries were reported.

No citations were issued following either accident.
