Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Just as they did 17 years ago, St. Louis football fans will watch the Rams and New England Patriots play in the Super Bowl. This time, the rooting interest has flipped. Many fans in St. Louis will be pulling for the Patriots and not their former team. The franchise’s success is salt in the wound for fans still bitter three years after owner Stan Kroenke moved the team back to Los Angeles.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The NCAA has sanctioned Missouri’s football, baseball and softball programs after an investigation revealed academic misconduct involving a tutor. Among the penalties were three years of probation and one year of postseason bans for all three programs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A state panel in Missouri has ruled that the Kansas City Chiefs owe $930,000 in back tax plus interest on the decade-old Arrowhead Stadium renovation. The Kansas City Star reports the team argued it didn’t owe taxes on hundreds of items it bought to outfit the new stadium. But that argument was dismissed Tuesday by a state commission. An attorney says the team will likely appeal. The case stems from a 2014 audit in which the state challenged sales tax exemptions on $23 million in purchases.

Audubon boys survive slow second half to fend off CAM

Sports

January 31st, 2019 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers grabbed a lead midway through the second quarter and fended off the CAM Cougars the rest of the way with a 56-44 win on Thursday night in boys hoops.  The Wheelers dropped in 41 first half points and led by 13 at halftime but the lead went on the basket in the second half. The two teams combined for just 11 points in the third quarter and CAM only could close the gap to 9 a couple of times in the fourth quarter.

After the game Audubon Head Coach Colleman Mullenix said the defensive pressure was solid for much of the night but the offense has to be more productive than they were in the second half.

Coach Mullenix also talked about the mental errors that plagued his team and the message to his team for the end of the season.

Audubon was led in the win by 19 points from Lane Lawson and 16 from Tate Killeen. The Wheelers are now 13-5 and will head to Underwood on Saturday.

CAM got 12 points from Lane Spieker but he was the only Cougar in double figures. The Cougars fall to 6-10 and will host Glidden-Ralston on Friday before heading to Woodbine on Saturday.

Ticknor hits game winner as CAM rallies to beat Audubon

Sports

January 31st, 2019 by admin

Macy Ticknor hit what would be the game winner with about 6 seconds left as CAM rallied to beat Audubon 52-50 in girls hoops on Thursday. The Class 1A 9th ranked Cougars found themselves down by 12 points heading into the fourth quarter on the road. The Cougars then turned up the defensive pressure to slow the Audubon offense and force some Wheeler turnovers to climb back in the game. Audubon scored 11 points in the fourth quarter but they all came from the free throw line. CAM eventually tied the game up at 48 and the teams traded single points to make it 50-all with a little over a minute left. The Cougars benefited from the possession arrow on a jump ball to get the ball back with just under a minute to play. The Wheelers allowed the Cougars to dribble the clock down to 13 seconds left and Coach Joe Wollum called a timeout to set up the final play. Zoey Baylor got the inbound pass in the corner then dribbled around to the top and down the right side of the lane. She drew defenders away from Macy Ticknor who she then lobbed the ball to for the winning bucket. Ticknor caught the pass, spun to the basket and finished. Aleah Hermensen had a chance at a long three for Audubon at the buzzer that was off the mark and CAM got the win.

Coach Wollum gave a lot of credit to Audubon for their strong effort but was proud of the way his team executed at the end of the game.

CAM lead after the first quarter 8-6 and the Wheeler led by just a point at 21-20 at halftime. The Wheelers then led 39-27 heading into the final quarter.

The Cougars were led by 17 points from Paige McAfee, 12 from Macy Ticknor, and 10 from Zoey Baylor. Star forward Madison Gettler sat much of the game with foul trouble and eventually fouled out late. The Cougars improved to 15-2 with the win and will host Glidden-Ralston on Friday night before traveling to Woodbine for a makeup game on Saturday.

The Wheelers were led by 16 points from Aleah Hermensen and 15 from Leah Subbert. Audubon is now 7-11 and will travel to Underwood for a makeup game on Saturday.
