Sports

February 9th, 2019 by Jim Field

Atlantic/CAM qualified five wrestlers for the state wrestling tournament next week at the Class 2-A District 4 meet in Harlan Saturday.

The Trojans had six wrestlers competing at the district meet and came away with two district champs and three runners-up.

At 106 pounds, freshman Garrett McLaren won the district title with a 6-3 win over Tyler Halloran of Clarinda.  McLaren had beaten Jake Porter of Winterset 8-6 in the semi-finals.  Mclaren is 40-13 for the year.

At 138 pounds, senior Chase McLaren pinned Colton Hauschild of Southwest Iowa in the semi’s and followed that up with a 17-2 technical fall over Isaac Bryan of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the championship match.  He improves his record to 48-3.

Joe Weaver lost a 6-4 decision to Nate Curry of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the 120 pound final and qualified as the runner-up at 120 pounds.  Weaver downed Kaden Bolton of Creston/O-M 9-1 in the semi’s.  Weaver is 42-12 on the year.

Connor Pellett is making a trip to state as the runner-up at 152 pounds after losing by fall to Easton Graff of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the finals.  He beat Tyler Brown of Winterset 16-6 in the semi-finals.  The senior is 44-9 for the season.

At 220 pounds, Cale Roller pinned Trevor Kinyon of Creston/O-M just as time ran out in the semi-final match to get to the championship, but was beaten by Joseph Arkfeld of Harlan with a late pin in the third period.  Roller got a lead and held off Colton Kinnison of Red Oak 4-3 in the wrestle back to earn a state tourney bid.  Roller is 43-9 on the year.

Kadin Stutzman lost his first match of the day to Jack West of Winterset by fall at 3:06 at 145 pounds.  He beat Mister McNaughton of Southwest Iowa by TECH FALL 15-0 at 5:30, but lost a wrestle back opportunity to Oscar Olmos of Harlan 9-6.  Stutsman endds his freshman season with a mark of 38-17.

TCU rides big first-half run to upset at No. 17 Iowa State

Sports

February 9th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kendric Davis scored a season-high 22 points, and TCU stunned No. 17 Iowa State 92-83 on Saturday for its first road win over a Top 25 team in 21 years. Kouat Noi, Desmond Bane and Alex Robinson each had 17 for the Horned Frogs (17-6, 5-5 Big 12). They used a staggering 27-4 first-half run to blow past the beleaguered Cyclones and greatly boost their NCAA Tournament chances.

TCU, a 9-point underdog that had lost its previous two road games by an average of 22.5 points, capped a stretch of seven straight makes to open the second half with a layup by Noi to jump ahead 54-36 with 15:32 left. The Horned Frogs opened the second half shooting 13 of 17 from the floor, and Davis’ scoop layup made it 69-50 with 8:14 to go. Bane’s steal and lay-in a few minutes later pushed TCU’s lead to 75-56.

Iowa State went on a late 10-0 run, but TCU had answers for everything the Cyclones threw at them. Marial Shayok scored 24 points and Michael Jacobson had 16 to lead the Cyclones (18-6, 7-4), who saw their winning streak snapped at four games. Iowa State missed 12 of its first 13 3s, falling into a hole that was too deep to climb out of.

Iowa State will likely stay in the rankings after beating Oklahoma on the road on Monday, but it’ll slide down at least a few spots. UP NEXT: Iowa State plays at Kansas State on Saturday.

Sports

February 9th, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team will head to Shenandoah tonight for a Class 3A Quarterfinal game and we’ll have it on KJAN. The Trojans are coming off a hard fought game against Harlan in which they came up short but showed some good things.  The 4-17 Trojans will try to carry some of the positives from that game into this postseason game with a 12-9 Fillies squad.

The Fillies are led by Logan Hughes who is averaging 24.2 points per game and also led her team with 235 rebounds and 35 steals.  The Fillies were able to beat the Trojans in their lone meeting of the regular season back on December 14th 70-46. Logan Hughes had 26 points and 15 rebounds in that first meeting. Atlantic had a nice outing from Haley Rasmussen with 21 points in that game and she’s coming off an 18 point performance against Harlan.

Rasmussen has averaged 11 per game for the Trojans and is joined in double figure output by McKenzie Waters who has dropped in 10 per contest. Baylee Newell is right behind them with 9.4 points per outing. The Trojans will need everyone firing on all cylinders if they want to keep their season moving tonight.

Chris Parks will have the call of the game on KJAN with pregame starting at 6:50pm and tip-off set for 7:00pm tonight. You can listen to the game on AM1220, FM101.1, and online at kjan.com. No video feed tonight, as it is not allowed in the postseason by the IGHSAU.

Sports

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — This could have been a lost season for Iowa State sophomore Cam Lard, who lost his starting job while serving a one-month suspension to open the year. Lard has settled into his new role as a reserve, and he’s starting to resemble the player he was a season ago. The 6-foot-9 Lard’s numbers are down considerably from where they were in 2017-18. But the 17th-ranked Cyclones are winning and Lard is doing his part. Iowa State hosts TCU on Saturday.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska is on a six-game losing streak as it heads into its visit to No. 15 Purdue on Saturday. The downturn comes after the Cornhuskers opened the season with wins in 11 of their first 13 games. They were picked to finish fourth in the Big Ten but now sit in 13th place. Nebraska is shooting 33 percent and averaging 59 points during the losing streak.

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals knew they were short a couple of pieces last season, even though they were in contention to make the playoffs until the final week. They may have plugged those holes with a trade for All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and star reliever Andrew Miller.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Veteran Adam Wainwright remains confident in his ability to still be effective on the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals. The team is believed to have one spot open for a starter and Wainwright wants to make his case as he goes into his 15th season in St. Louis. He says he is healthy after making just eight starts last year because of injuries.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas guard Lagerald Vick is taking a leave of absence from the basketball program. That means the No. 13 Jayhawks are even more short-handed in their effort to win a 15th straight Big 12 title. Jayhawks coach Bill Self said in a statement Thursday night that Vick has “some personal matters that require his immediate attention.” Vick is expected to be with family in Memphis when the Jayhawks host Oklahoma State on Saturday. Self said there is no timetable for his return.
