School Board elections in Cass County are set to take place on September 13 this fall.

Nomination papers for offices up for election must be filed with the appropriate school board’s secretary by August 4. All offices up for election this year are for four-year terms.

Hot Temps Cause Clarinda Sirens to Sound

Hot temperatures were the cause of an early wake up call for residents of Clarinda early Tuesday morning.

Emergency sirens in Clarinda accidently sounded for about five minutes at about 3:00 AM Tuesday morning.

Officials in Clarinda say the sirens went off due to atmospheric conditions and their effects on wireless technology. The heat caused radio frequencies to skip hundreds of miles across the atmosphere. Those skips usually occur during prolonged periods of warm temperatures.

ELDON E. SHERMAN, 93, of Stuart died Monday, July 18th at the Stuart Community Care Center.  Funeral services for ELDON SHERMAN will be held 10:00am Friday, July 22nd at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6-8pm on Thursday, July 21st at the funeral home.

PAUL MATHIAS VOGGESSER, 84, of Hancock died Tuesday, July 19th at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.  Funeral services for PAUL VOGGESSER will be held 10:30am Friday, July 22nd at the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut.  Pauley-Jones Funeral Home of Avoca has the arrangements.

Clarinda Man gets 15 years Prison on Child Porn Charges

A Clarinda man has been sentenced to over 15 years in prison on child pornography charges.

Robert Eugene Glassgow of Clarinda was sentenced to 188 months of prison Monday for receipt of child pornography. United States District Judge James Gritzner also ordered Glassgow to serve a ten year term of supervised release following incarceration.

Glassgow was found guilty of the charges by a jury in January. During the trial prosecutors claimed Glassgow had built his own computer and used it to share child pornography files.

The investigation was conducted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation-Cyber Crimes Unit, Clarinda Police Department, Page County Attorney’s Office and Department of Homeland Security. The case was prosecuted by the United State Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Cass County Board of Supervisors Preview

The Cass County Board of Supervisors are set to hold their regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday morning.

On the agenda for is a tourism report that features a proclamation of Cass County tourism week from July 31 – August 5.

Following reports from the Cass County attorney and Cass County Engineer about secondary roads updates, the board will discuss going into a closed session to discuss litigation matters. The board will go into a closed session on the matter if they deem it appropriate.

The board will then take action on a resolution to conduct a hearing on loan and bonds for the northwest Sewer and Water line extension project.

Following that discussion they’ll take action to approve changes to risk management programs. They include employee incident review and employee return to work programs.

A discussion and possibly action will then take place on the extension of tax credits for the fiscal year 2011-2012.

The meeting begins at 9:00 Wednesday morning.

Adair County Board of Supervisors Meeting Preview

The Adair County Board of Supervisors will have their regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday morning.

On the agenda is the Success 4 Kids Fiscal Agent Contract.

County Auditor Mindy Schaefer will make a presentation, and Custodian Rich Wallace will discuss construction contracts and longevity increases.

Assistant to Engineer Tom McGovern will discuss longevity raises for Bruce Brown & Mick Sherer. McGovern will also review delivery of freightliner per truck bids.

The meeting begins at 9:00 AM at the Adair County Courthouse.

DNR Open House on Dams in Atlantic

A DNR open house is coming to Atlantic in a couple weeks to help answer landowner’s questions about dams.

To assist local residents that own property with a dam and also owners of larger dams, the DNR is hosting seven open houses across the state this summer in cooperation with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. The session in Atlantic will primarily focus on maintaining dams and constructing ponds on an owners property.

Attendees will be able to ask DNR and NRCS staff questions about maintaining dams, constructing new ponds, fish management and stocking, regulations regarding dams, available technical and financial assistance, and water quality.

Those considering building a new pond or lake, as well as professionals who assist landowners with pond construction and maintenance, may also want to attend.

The Atlantic meeting is August 2nd at the Rock Island Depot from 3:00 to 7:00.
