The defending champion Gamecocks took control in the second quarter to beat Maryland 86-75, Monday night in Greenville, South Carolina. South Carolina takes a 36-0 record into the Final Four

It’s South Carolina’s third straight trip to the Final Four and their fifth in eight years.
Wide receiver and offensive line have been two trouble spots for Iowa’s struggling offense and both areas lack depth at the start of spring drills. Ankeny native Brody Brecht announced he is stepping away to concentrate on baseball and injuries have left the Hawkeyes short on wideouts.
That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. The offensive line struggled last season for one of the nation’s worst offenses and while that unit has experience, many of the players are sidelined this spring.
Despite being thin up front this spring Ferentz believes the offensive line will be improved next season.
The Hawkeyes finished 8-5 last season.
Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell says the Cyclones aren’t changing their style of offense but are hoping for better results. Campbell fired offensive coordinator Tom Manning after a 4-8 season in which the Cyclones finished at the bottom of the Big 12 in scoring and total offense. Nate Scheelhaase was promoted to offensive coordinator.
Campbell says they have looked at all facets of how the play offense.

(Radio Iowa) – Four bills introduced in the Iowa legislature this year have been designed to set a new statewide policy for determining how much elected officials in Iowa’s 99 counties are paid, but lawmakers are still working out the details. Senator Mike Klimesh, a Republican from Spillville, says an alternative that may be debated in the Senate this week is still being drafted.
“We’re going to not allow counties to not have a compensation board. The supervisors must have a compensation board in the county, Klimesh says. “We’re going to make the county compensation board show their work.” Klimesh says it would involve showing base salaries for all county officials who are elected to their positions and how those salaries compare to pay for officials in counties of similar size. The Iowa House has already approved a bill that would let county supervisors dissolve compensation boards and make the salary decisions themselves.
Representative Amy Nielsen, a Democrat from North Liberty, says the bill also forbids counties from reducing one elected official’s salary, while all the rest are increased. “They could not be targeted for a reduction in pay for any retaliatory or political reasons,” Nielsen says.
Compensation boards currently meet annually to make salary recommendations for each elected official in their county — the supervisors as well as the county attorney, county auditor, county treasurer and county sheriff. The supervisors may reduce the board’s recommendations, but current state law says they have to make the same percentage reduction for all officials.

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa D-C-I has released updated information on the woman killed in Sheldon last week. The woman has been identified as 62-year-old Jody Lynn Duskin. Duskin was found dead inside her home last Thursday by a family member. The State Medical Examiner determined her death was a homicide.
Duskin’s son, Nathaniel Kassel of Rock Rapids was arrested in South Dakota for first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Kassel is being held at the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office in South Dakota awaiting a judge to approve his extradition to Iowa.
No other details of the shooting are being released as police continue to investigate.

(Atlantic, Iowa) – Much of the City of Atlantic was without power for about an hour this (Monday) afternoon. The lights went out at around 4-p.m. and came back on right around 5-p.m. Atlantic Municipal Utilities General Manager Steve Tjepkes initially said the problem was with a feeder line, but he said right after the power came on, that a contractor working on a substation ran into an issue which resulted in the widespread outage.
Street lights were out across town, causing the Police and Street Departments to roll-out temporary 4-way stop signs. There were reports earlier in the afternoon, of a separate power outage in Council Bluffs that left 5,500 people in the dark.
CLEVELAND – For the second time since 2019, Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard has been selected as one of 28 Cushman & Wakefield AD of the Year (ADOY) honorees by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Pollard was one of four 2023 winners from the Football Bowl Subdivision and will be honored in conjunction with the 58th Annual NACDA & Affiliates Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla., June 13.
“I am honored and humbled to accept this award on behalf of our entire athletics program,” said Pollard, the 20th individual to earn multiple FBS AD of the Year honors in the award’s 25-year history. “The award is a great testament to the success our department has experienced as the result of the hard work performed by our coaches, staff and student-athletes. In my opinion, this award not only recognized the Athletics Director of the Year, but also acknowledges the Athletics Department of the Year!”
Pollard, Iowa State’s longest-tenured Director of Athletics and fourth-longest serving individual at their current Power Five institution, is in his 18th year leading the Cyclones. His vision for ISU student-athlete’s academic and athletic success, coupled with an unbridled passion to execute that vision, continues to impact the campus and Ames communities, the Big 12 Conference and intercollegiate athletics.
Based upon the NCAA’s 2022 Division I metrics, Cyclone student-athletes continue to thrive academically under Pollard’s leadership. ISU led the Big 12 and set school-records for both its overall (95 percent) and female (99) Graduation Success Rates, while its male GSR (90) was a school-record.
