I-29 damaged by Mo. River flood (updated 4:54-p.m.)

News

August 12th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

The Missouri River has yet to recede across Interstate 29 in southwest Iowa, and the full extent of the damage is uncertain, but one thing is known: the road is in worse shape than officials had hoped. Bob Younie, head of maintenance for the Iowa Department of Transportation said in a briefing Thursday, that an 11-foot deep hole has been scoured beneath I-29 where it goes up an embankment to an overpass, near Hamburg. The hole, he says, is getting bigger. Younie called the situation a “Setback…in the recovery from the flooding.”

That section of interstate he described was closed in June because of the Missouri River flooding. There are four Interstate bridges in that area. Younie said the worst case scenario would be for all four bridges to get washed out by flooding, but so far that, hasn’t happened. He said the best case scenario, which is no longer possible, would have been if the bridges and their approaches would escape without major damage.

Younies says so far, one bridge approach has seen significant scouring, and a parallel bridge is threatened by scouring. The only way to know for sure how much damage the bridges and roadway have sustained, is after the water recedes, and an assessment gets underway. The water may linger in the area for at least another month, but even that’s not a given.

Here’s the DOT Press Release issued today (Friday), at 3:41-pm

AMES, Iowa – Aug. 12, 2011 - The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is
reporting that the Missouri River flooding has undermined the south bridge
approaches of dual Interstate 29 bridges at mile post 1.4 in Fremont County and is
threatening the bridges. The seriousness of the damage will undoubtedly prolong
flood recovery efforts aimed at eventual reopening of the interstate when the waters
recede.

The dual set of bridges were constructed in 1972, are 40 feet wide and 179 feet
long, and located in the northbound and southbound lanes of I-29. The bridges take
I-29 traffic over Drainage Ditch Number 6.

The full extent of the damage to the bridges, roadway approaches and embankment are
not known at this time due to the high-velocity flood waters that are still rushing
under the bridge. But there is damage readily apparent at the site, including
collapsing of the pavement, loss of material and scouring at least 11 feet deep.

Mitigation efforts are underway to attempt to reduce further loss of the soil under
the bridge approach pavement. But the efforts have had little success as the rushing
flood waters continue to wash away the large rock placed at the site.

It is too soon to determine what corrective actions will be necessary, but stability
and safety of the structure is threatened primarily due to the extent of the scour.
The piling that support the bridge are 35 feet long and have been partially exposed
(no longer embedded in the river bottom) due to the scouring action of the flood
water.

Due to an earlier levee breach, flood waters from the Missouri River are flowing
inland, affecting I-29 and area tributaries and streams.

The Iowa DOT will continue to provide the public with regular updates on the damages
caused by the flooding, as well as recovery efforts when the waters begin to recede
later this month.

This is an unsafe area for the public to enter due to the possibility of undermined
pavement.

Due to these types of safety hazards, never enter a closed roadway, even after the
flood waters recede.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals have bolstered their bullpen for the stretch run by coming to terms with veteran left-hander Arthur Rhodes.  The 41-year-old Rhodes is scheduled to join the Cardinals on Friday prior to the start of three-game series against visiting Colorado. The Cardinals will make a roster move to add Rhodes after
reaching a deal with him Thursday.  Rhodes was released by Texas this week. He went 3-3 with a 4.81 ERA in 32 games for the Rangers. He held left-handed hitters to a
.216 average in 37-at bats.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Albert Pujols kicked off a 4-for-4 night with a solo homer and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 on Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep.  St. Louis pulled within four games of NL Central-leading Milwaukee, which has won 13 of 15. The Cardinals are the only team to beat the Brewers during their hot streak.  Pujols entered with just five hits in 42 at-bats against the Brewers. He ended the slide with a drive in the first against Yovani Gallardo (13-8), tying him with teammate Lance Berkman for the National League lead with 28 homers. Pujols added two singles off Gallardo, who lasted just five innings.

Cyclones Victorious In First Game In Italy, 96-55

Sports

August 12th, 2011 by Jim Field

OLEGGIO, Italy- The Iowa State men’s basketball team opened the second half on a 23-5 run en route to 96-55 win over Oleggio Basket Thursday evening in Oleggio, Italy. The game was the first of Iowa State’s Italian trip.

The Cyclones struggled at the beginning, holding a 43-32 lead at the half. But the decisive run to begin the second half broke open the game. Scott Christopherson capped off an 11-1 run with a trey to give the Cyclones a 66-37 lead with just over six minutes expired in the second half.

“I thought early on was to be expected,” Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. “We hadn’t played in three days and done anything basketball-wise. It took us awhile to get our legs underneath us. But once we got settled down, I was very pleased with the effort. That was one thing that was constant the whole game was how hard we played. We helped each other out on defense and got a lot of deflections and steals which led to some easy fast-break baskets.”

Melvin Ejim was one of five Cyclones in double-figure scoring, tallying a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards. Ejim was 7-of-10 from the floor. Chris Babb led all scorers with 16 points, followed by 14 points from Christopherson. Babb also recorded six steals.

Royce White scored six points on 3-of-5 shooting from the floor. But the Cyclone forward helped out in other ways, grabbing 12 caroms and dishing out a team-high seven assists.

Iowa State didn’t shoot it very well from long-range, going 5-of-22 from beyond the arc. The game featured four 10-minute quarters and a NBA regulation 3-point line.

“The one thing we didn’t do well tonight was shoot the ball well,” Hoiberg said. “If we made our normal shots, we score 110. If we play with this kind of effort and intensity we are going to be fine.”

The Cyclones will play again tomorrow vs. Sondrio All-Stars in Verase. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CST.
