Iowa Junior College Forfeits Remaining 12 Games

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — The Southeastern Community College men’s basketball team is forfeiting the season’s remaining 12 games because 10 players have been dismissed for violating college and athletic department rules.

The Hawk Eye of Burlington reports that two other players have been declared academically ineligible.

That left only two players from the 14-man roster.

The team had gone 13-3 so far this year.

Terry Carroll is the men’s coach and the school’s athletic director, and he says the players violated the school’s athletic code of conduct.

In a statement, Carroll says “these have been good kids who made some incredibly irresponsible and poor choices.”

Because of confidentiality and student privacy laws, the college would not disclose details.

College President Beverly Simone says she supports Carroll’s decisions.

Guthrie County K-9 injured in 2010 to be retired

News

December 30th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

A Guthrie County Sheriff’s Department K-9 who was hurt when he was hit by a car in 2010, will be retired this weekend after six-years of service to the county. K-9 “Raven’s”  last day as a member of the sheriff’s department is January 1st.  Guthrie County Sheriff Marty Arganbright announced the news during this week’s meeting of the County Board of Supervisors. Raven was struck by a car in October 2010, and never fully recovered from a compound leg fracture he suffered during the accident. He also suffers from arthritis in his injured leg. Arganbright says even though Raven underwent surgery to repair the damage to his leg, the dog was unable to continue with the force. He’s served the county for six years.

Raven’s training was paid for entirely through donations, and cost about $10,000. His after-accident surgery exceeded $4,000, and was also fully funded by donations. The Sheriff said Raven will not be replaced any time soon. He hopes someone will step forward and adopt the dog, whom he says served the County well, and needs to be treated right, in his retirement years.

Poppens Leads Cyclones Over New Hampshire

Sports

December 30th, 2011 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Chelsea Poppens recorded her fifth double-double of the season (14 points/16 rebounds) to help Iowa State cruise to a 71-57 win over New Hampshire Thursday night in Hilton Coliseum.

Poppens was one of four Cyclones in double figures, including 14 points from freshman Brynn Williamson, one shy from her career-best. Hallie Christofferson added 15 points and six boards, as the Cyclones improve to 8-2 on the year and advance to the finals of the Cyclone Challenge tomorrow night.

Iowa State wasted little time taking control, mounting an early 23-8 lead with 11:36 left before the break. Christofferson scored seven points in the first nine minutes to put the Cyclones on track.

Iowa State then suffered a drought to help the Wildcats creep back into the game. The Cyclones went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal, as UNH cut the lead to 29-25 with under 3:00 minutes until the break.

Amanda Zimmerman finally ended the Cyclone dry spell with a big 3-point basket. Lauren Mansfield followed with another trey to push the Cyclone lead back to double digits (35-25). Iowa State led at the break, 37-27, as Chelsea Poppens had seven points and 10 boards in the first half to pace the Cyclones.

The Cyclones moved out in front 56-40 with 10:49 left in the game thanks to a 7-0 run. Christofferson buried a three and Poppens muscled a shot in down low to help Iowa State expand its lead.

The lead never dipped below 14 points the rest of the way and the Cyclones were up by as many as 20 points.

Iowa State outrebounded UNH, 43-32 and hit nine 3-pointers in the contest. The Cyclones held the Wildcats to 34.4 percent shooting from the floor, the ninth time this season Iowa State held a team to below 40 percent from the field.

Iowa State will play host to Buffalo tomorrow night in the finals of the Cyclone Challenge at 7:30 p.m. Buffalo defeated NJIT, 66-53 in its first round game.

No injuries, but citation issued after accident in Montgomery County

News

December 30th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

Sheriff’s officials in Montgomery County say a Glenwood man was cited for Failure to Yield, following a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon, about 4-miles north of Villisca. Authorities say a 1995 Toyota Camry driven by 49-year old Bruce Fitzwater, of Villisca, was traveling north on Highway 71, when a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am driven by 24-year old Tyler Wolfe, of Glenwood, exited westbound Highway 34 and didn’t see Fitzwater’s car. Wolfe attempted to turn south onto Highway 71 from the stop sign, when his vehicle pulled into the Toyota’s path.

The accident happened at around 3:35-p.m.  Damage from the incident amounted to $3,200. No injuries were reported.
