Tyler O’Neill also homered for St. Louis. Yasiel Puig hit his first home run for the Reds and Jesse Winker hit his second in two days at Estadio de Beisbol de Monterrey. The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels will play twice at this stadium in early May.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pinch-runner extraordinaire Terrance Gore stole a base and then scored on Hunter Dozier’s single in the ninth inning, lifting the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Indians 9-8 to complete a three-game sweep of the AL Central favorites. Ryan O’Hearn led off the ninth with a walk against Brad Hand and was replaced by Gore.

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Derek Dietrich hit a tiebreaking homer off Adam Wainwright in the seventh inning and added a two-run triple as the Cincinnati Reds won their fourth straight game, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 in the raucous Estadio de Beisbol de Monterrey. The start of the two-game series marked the first time either team had played in the regular season in Mexico. St. Louis had won five in a row.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Homer Bailey pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 3-0 for their second straight win after a 10-game skid. Ian Kennedy pitched a perfect eighth and Willy Peralta followed in the ninth for his first save to complete the two-hitter. Ryan O’Hearn homered, and Whit Merrifield and Adalberto Mondesi each had an RBI single for the Royals.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez exceeded the hype that followed him from Fresno, California, to Lincoln as coach Scott Frost’s first recruit. He was the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener for the Cornhuskers and became the most productive rookie in program history. Martinez has spent the spring adding polish to his game and is preparing to lead a team that is projected to be one of the most improved in the nation this fall. The Huskers hold their spring game Saturday.

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Derek Dietrich hit a tiebreaking homer off Adam Wainwright in the seventh inning and added a two-run triple as the Cincinnati Reds won their fourth straight game, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 Saturday night in the raucous Estadio de Beisbol de Monterrey. The start of the two-game series marked the first time either team had played in the regular season in Mexico. St. Louis had won five in a row. Wainwright hit an RBI single in the second off Tanner Roark for a 1-0 lead. Jesse Winker’s one-out homer in the sixth was the Reds’ first hit off Wainwright (1-1). Dietrich connected to lead off the seventh, finishing Wainwright. Dietrich tripled to cap a three-run eighth that made it 5-1.

Kolten Wong hit a leadoff home run against Zach Duke to begin the Cardinals ninth. Raisel Iglesias relieved and, after St. Louis put two runners on base, retired Paul Goldschmidt and Paul DeJong for his second save. Jared Hughes (1-0) got two outs for the win. Mexico is hosting major league games for the second year in a row. Last year, the Los Angeles Dodgers combined for a no-hitter against San Diego at Monterrey. Next month, the Los Angeles Angels and Houston Astros will play two games in this ballpark.

Tyler Cook to enter NBA Draft, will hire agent

Sports

April 12th, 2019 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa men’s basketball junior Tyler Cook announced on Friday his intentions to hire and agent and enter the 2019 NBA Draft.

“What a ride! These past three years have been arguably the most important of my life,” said Cook. “Going through what we did as a team allowed me to learn more than I can put into words. This year my teammates and coaches challenged each other to simply be better, and we did that. Although we feel we could have been playing longer, we achieved our goal of getting this program back to the NCAA Tournament. I’m honored that I was able to be a part of that.

“After weighing my options both last year and now, my family and I, along with the help of my coaches, have decided to enter the 2019 NBA Draft and hire an agent. This has been my lifelong dream. I am excited and ready to take on the challenge of making these dreams come to fruition. I want to thank each and every person who has supported me throughout my time at the University of Iowa.”

In his third season with the Hawkeyes, Cook was a second-team All-Big Ten selection by the media and earned all-district accolades by the NABC and USBWA. He led the team in both scoring (14.5) and rebounding (7.6), while ranking fifth in the Big Ten in free throws attempted per game (6.12), eighth in rebounding (7.6), 12th in scoring (14.5), and 13th in field goal percentage (.528).

Cook (6-foot-9, 250 pounds) is one of only nine players in Iowa history to total more than 1,300 points and 600 rebounds. The native of St. Louis, Missouri, posted a team-best six double-doubles this past season and is one of 15 players in Iowa history to record at least 15 career double-doubles. He recorded at least 15 points and five rebounds over a 10-game span from Nov. 30 to Jan. 12, becoming the first Hawkeye to accomplish the feat since James Winters 25 years ago (1993-94). The junior forward was named to the 2K Empire Classic All-Tournament Team, averaging 17.5 points and nine rebounds in wins over 13th-ranked Oregon and Connecticut at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

“We fully support Tyler’s decision to pursue his professional goals,” said Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery. “It has been an honor to coach Tyler the past three years and watch him develop both as a player and person. We are thankful for Tyler’s significant contributions that he has made to our basketball program. My staff and I look forward to supporting Tyler in the next steps of his journey.”

The NBA Draft will be held on June 20 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
