(Radio Iowa) – Severe weather caused power outages and property damage in northeast Iowa this weekend. According to Winneshiek County Emergency Management, the city of Calmar was especially hit hard, including the Northeast Iowa Community College campus. Homes, buildings and cars were damaged. In Decorah, a popular trail that runs along the Upper Iowa River was closed due to flooding and storm damage.

The National Weather Service office in La Crosse reports a line of storms that swept through northeast Iowa Saturday night and Sunday morning produced strong winds and heavy rain in Winneshiek and Allamakee Counties. Some buildings were damaged in Waukon and there was significant tree damage reported around Waukon’s City Park.

Many residents of northeast Iowa spent Sunday cleaning up after a round of severe weather swept through the area Saturday night into Sunday morning. At the height of the storm, about 12-thousand customers had lost power. Sean Snyder, Emergency Management Coordinator in Winneshiek County, said  “A lot of tree damage, a lot of downed power lines.”

“The City of Calmar was the hardest hit,” Snyder says. “NICC, South Winneshiek School District was hit as well as the residents of Calmar.” Snyder says there was structural damage to the Northeast Iowa Community College campus in Calmar. The Fidelity Bank will be closed today (Monday) due because of damage to the building on Calmar’s Main Street. Todd Shea with the National Weather Service office in La Crosse, Wisconsin, says their initial assessment is the damage in Calmar was caused by straight line winds.

“From what it appears from surveying and talking to officials in the area, we had just kind of a downburst or a swath of very intense thunderstorm winds that rolled through mainly the western and southern ends of the community,” Shea says. Calmar received three inches of rain as well. Nearly four inches fell in Decorah and storm damage closed a 13-mile bike trail around Decorah. In Allamakee County, a 60 mile an hour wind gust was recorded in Waukon and the Waukon City Park and Campground were damaged.

(Red Oak, Iowa) – Fire and Emergency Management officials in Red Oak say no injuries were reported following a structure fire, Sunday afternoon. Authorities say that around 2:14pm, the Montgomery County Communications Center received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting an upstairs apartment fire at 615 N 3rd Street in Red Oak, located just north of the downtown square. The apartment building is owned by Craig and Carmen Archer.

Officers of the Red Oak Police Department arrived on scene immediately and confirmed all occupants were out of the structure prior to Red Oak Fire arriving on scene. Red Oak Fire arrived on scene within 4 minutes of being paged and requested a second alarm structure fire response bringing additional crews from the Stanton Fire Department, Elliott Fire Department and additional aerial support from the Glenwood Fire Department.

Fire crews made an immediate and aggressive interior attack of the fire and were able to contain the fire to the origin apartment. Smoke and water damage is throughout the entire structure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist five displaced adults due to the fire. No injuries to any occupants or firefighters on scene however two cats were located deceased and unable to be revived at the scene after attempts were made. The Red Oak Fire Department was assisted by the Red Oak Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Communications, Stanton FD, Elliott FD, Glenwood FD, MidAmerican Energy, American Red Cross and the Iowa State Fire Marshall Office

(Atlantic, Iowa) – Police and rescue personnel were called to the scene of a vehicle and bicycle collision early this (Sunday) afternoon, at 10th and Plum Streets, in Atlantic. The page for emergency personnel went out at around 12:16-p.m. The person on the bike was said to be sitting upright, following the collision.

According to Atlantic Police, a 13-year-old male was riding a bicycle northbound on Plum Street, and ran the stop sign at the intersection with 10^th Street. The bicycle struck the driver’s side of a 2010 GMC Acadia, driven by Delilah Heuton, who was westbound on 10^th Street.

Police said the teen was transported by personal vehicle to Cass Health, for treatment of minor injuries.

(Missouri Valley, Iowa) – A woman from Missouri Valley died, and a man from Missouri Valley was injured, after the vehicle they were in crashed at around 2:50-a.m. today (Sunday), in Harrison County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2019 Chevy Cruze driven by 21-year-old Quentin Vogel was southbound on 335th Street, southeast of Mo. Valley, and approaching a curve at the intersection with Merrick Place, when the car failed to negotiate a curve.

The vehicle left the road and struck two trees. Both crash victims were wearing their seat belts. The were transported by Missouri Valley Ambulance, where a passenger in the car, 21-year-old Faith Staska, died from her injuries at the Missouri Valley Hospital. Quentin Vogel was injured. A report on his condition was not available.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by Missouri Valley Police, Fire and Ambulance.

(Greenfield, Iowa) – The Adair County Secondary Roads Department reports 130th street in the northeastern part of the County (between Sheldon Avenue and County Road P-25), will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday, July 25, 2022 and continuing through Thursday, July 28, 2022. (Harlan, Iowa) – Severe storms brought straight-line winds of up to 80-mph Saturday night. Shelby6 County Emergency Management Coordinator Alex Londo reports the County was placed under a Servere Thunderstorm Warning at around 8:25 PM, with a special weather statement for the communities of Shelby, Tennant, and Harlan to shelter in place.

The storm sirens were sounded in those towns, as well as Elk Horn, as it passed through the county. The only damage that has been reported so far, Londo said, was trees and debris in the roadway throughout the county.

Crews were working on cleaning it up as well as restoring power to areas that have no power. Elsewhere, winds gusting up to 60 mph felled large trees and knocked out power in Lake View. The Harrison County EMA reports large, downed trees destroyed a couple of homes in Mondamin. Winds gusted up to 70 mph 2 miles west of Little Sioux, in Harrison County.

And, a 69 mph gust of wind was recorded by the AWOS one-mile west of Denison, at around 9-p.m.

(Sidney, Iowa) – Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports that at around 10:35-p.m., Friday, Fremont County Deputies were called to the Fremont County campgrounds south of Sidney for a report of a male who had threatened to kill three campers. Prior to law enforcement arrival, the male fled into a wooded area near the Fremont County Golf Course. A search was conducted, and the male was not located.

On Saturday (today), Deputies were called to the Fremont County Golf Course for a report that the male had returned to the area. The male, attempted to hide again in a wooded area, but was apprehended by Fremont County Deputies. The male, identified as 56-year-old Jeffrey Bloomfield, with no known address, was placed under arrest. A search of his person uncovered property stolen from a residence in Sidney.

Bloomfield faces charges that include Burglary 3rd Degree, Theft 5th Degree, Interference with Official Acts, and three counts of Harassment 1st Degree. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, Mills County Sheriff’s Office, Mills County K9 Unit, Shenandoah K9 Unit, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the Sidney Fire Department Drone Team, assisted with the case.

The Iowa State Patrol reports a total of three people died and three others were injured in separate northern Iowa crashes, Friday. Two people died and one person was injured during a single-vehicle crash that occurred at around 8:15-p.m. Friday, in Cerro Gordo County. The Patrol says a 2006 GMC Sierra pickup driven by 31-year-old Paul N. Swann, of Fertile, Iowa, was traveling north on Fir Avenue, when it went out of control and entered a ditch. The vehicle came back onto the road before entering the ditch a second time and coming to rest in the south ditch off of 330th Street, on its passenger side. Swann, and a passenger in the vehicle, 33-year-old Cody A. Keeney, also of Fertile, died at the scene. A second passenger, 31-year-old Jenns B. Berggren, of Mason City, was flown from the scene to a hospital. The crash remains under investigation. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Mason City and Clear Lake EMS Departments, and the Hanlontown Fire Dept. First Responders.

The second fatal accident happened at around 3:20-p.m., Friday, in Hancock County. The Patrol says a 2018 Chevy Silverado pickup driven by 16-year-old Kaden Buckley, of Ventura, was traveling east on 190th Street, when Buckley failed to stop at the posted intersection with Highway 69, south of Garner. The pickup struck a northbound 2019 Subaru Ascent broadside. The driver of the Subaru, 79-year-old Sharon Schneider, of Clear Lake, died from her injuries. The accident remains under investigation. Schneider was wearing her seat belt. The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, along with Garner EMS.

And, two people from Slater were injured during a crash that happened at around 8:32-p.m. Friday, in Butler County. The Patrol reports a 2019 Chevy Suburban, driven by 29-year-old Zachary Toben, of Slater, was stopped at the intersection of Highways 14 and 57, when the vehicle was struck from behind, by a 2013 Ford Fusion, driven by 56-year-old Craig Pals, of Cedar Falls.

The force of the impact pushed the Suburban through the intersection before it came to rest on the north side of Highway 57. Toben and his passenger, 31-year-old Brittany Toben, of Slater, were injured and transported by Parkersburg EMS to the hospital in Grundy Center. Both were wearing their seat belts. The crash remains under investigation. Assisting the State Patrol at the scene, was the Butler County Sheriff’s Dept., Parkersburg Police and Parkersburg EMS.
