Sports

November 15th, 2011 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State will face by far its biggest test yet on Friday night when it hosts second-ranked Oklahoma State in a rare nationally televised game for the Cyclones.  Oklahoma State is averaging nearly 52 points a game, which ranks second in the nation, and last week it scored 49 points in the first half of a 66-6 drubbing of Texas Tech.  Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads says the Cowboys offense might be the best he’s seen in his coaching career. Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden leads the Cowboys with 3,635 yards passing and 31 touchdowns.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel could miss the remainder of the season after sustaining what coach Todd Haley is calling a “significant” injury to his throwing hand.  Cassel hurt his right hand near the end of the Chiefs’ 17-10 loss to Denver on Sunday. The injury appeared to occur when Cassel was sacked by Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller, though Haley wasn’t sure if it was the hit or the way Cassel landed on the turf that caused it.  Haley refused to say whether the team would put the former Pro Bowl quarterback on injured reserve. But he did say “it’s a possibility” when asked whether he’d miss the rest of the season.  Tyler Palko is expected to start Monday night at New England.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Police say robbery charges are pending for Iowa State backup wide receiver Albert Gary following a June incident.  University police Capt. Aaron Delashmutt says Gary hasn’t been formally charged with robbery. Officials have filed paperwork with the court system and are awaiting final approval.  Delashmutt says more information about the case should be available Tuesday.  Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads announced Monday that Gary had been suspended for three games because of the incident. Rhoads says Gary will be available for Friday night’s game against No. 2 Oklahoma State.  Gary, a 22-year-old redshirt sophomore from Ocala, Fla., wasn’t made available to reporters Monday. He has seven catches for 76 yards this season.

Big 12: 9 Possible Bowl Teams, 2 Vie for Auto BCS

Sports

November 15th, 2011 by Jim Field

With three weeks left in the Big 12’s first round-robin schedule, the league’s automatic BCS berth could come down to one game.  Second-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 5 Oklahoma play in the regular season finale. With no more Big 12 championship game, the winner of that Dec. 3 game at Oklahoma State will be headed to the BCS – if the Sooners don’t slip up before then.  While No. 16 Kansas State could still tie for the regular-season conference title, the Wildcats are out of the mix for the automatic BCS bid because of losses to both Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.  The Wildcats, Baylor and Texas are already bowl eligible while Missouri, Texas A&M, Iowa State and Texas Tech each need only one more win to give the league nine bowl teams.

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) – Matthew Dellavedova scored 11 points, Rob Jones added 10 and 10 rebounds and Saint Mary’s overcame a sluggish start to beat Northern Iowa 57-41 on Monday night.  The Gaels (2-0) missed nine of their first 11 shots but went on two 19-4 runs, at the end of the first half and again midway through the second half, to roll to their second consecutive lopsided win. Saint Mary’s beat Fresno Pacific by 40 points in its opener.  Dellavedova shot only 4 of 12 from the floor but made two 3-pointers and had eight points during the Gaels’ big run after halftime. One of four starters returning for Saint Mary’s, Dellavedova added seven assists.  Johnny Moran scored 13 points and Chip Rank added 11 for Northern Iowa (1-1). The Panthers shot just 32 percent and trailed by as much as 28.
