SIDNEY, Iowa (AP) – Officials say the levee near Percival that failed in last summer’s Missouri River flooding will undergo temporary repairs but will remain vulnerable to severe flooding next year. According to reports, damage to the levee is about $120 million but only $10 million has been received to fix it. Pat Sheldon of the local levee district says it’s going to take time to clear legal hurdles and ensure the work is done right. Kim Thomas of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the Percival levee is a top priority but money is limited. The agency says the levee will be repaired to handle a 25-year flood by March 1, but it will take a year or more to restore it to the way it was before the flooding.
The Union County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a reported armed robbery. The incident was said to have occurred at around 1:30-p.m., Sunday, at 120th and Beechwood Ave., or about 5-miles southwest of Orient. Authorities say Ronnie Gilbert, of Corning, said he was robbed an gunpoint by an unknown male suspect in a tan Chevrolet or GMC pick-up. An undisclosed amount of money was taken. Anyone with information relating to the incident is aksed to contact the Union County Law Enforcement Center, at 641-782-8402.
The Iowa Department of Revenue won’t be mailing out income tax forms and instruction books to taxpayers this year. Department spokesperson, Kay Arvidson, says it’s a move that many states and the I-R-S have already made. Arvidson says you can still call or e-mail the department if you want the paper forms. She says they wanted to be sure that people can still have access to the information, they are just not mailing them to homes any more. Iowa is one of the leading states for electronic tax filing and Arvidson says fewer people actually need to have the paper forms.
Arvidson says they have cut back on the number of paper books over the last several years and she says they are like the rest of state goverment and watching every dollar that is spent. She says they can save over 50-thousand dollars by only sending the documents to the people that want them rather and mailing them to everyone’s home. Libraries have been one of the main places people could pick up the tax forms but that is changing too.
Arvidson says they’ve provided information to the libraries on how to direct people to their website for the forms, but she says the paper forms will no longer be given to the libraries to be handed out to the public. Arvidson says it is part of the evolving use of on-line tax filing. Arvidson says it’s a big change, but an important change for efficiency as people move into the electronic realm. She says they don’t want to leave anyone out, so the paper forms will still be available.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State used a 17-0 second-half run to come from behind to defeat the Drake Bulldogs, 71-64, Tuesday evening at the Knapp Center. The win improves Iowa State to 2-0 on the season while Drake falls to 0-2.
Chelsea Poppens stepped up for the Cyclones in the second half. After a quiet first half from the junior, Poppens was the key to Iowa State’s late comeback and victory. Poppens contributed a team-high 18 points, 16 in the second half, and eight rebounds. Nikki Moody posted a career-high 16 points while Jessica Schroll added 13 and Hallie Christofferson 11. Christofferson completed her first career double-double with a team-leading 11 rebounds.
Down 59-50 with 5:55 to go, Iowa State put together a string of baskets and defensive stops to get back into the game. The Cyclones tied the game at 59-59 on a driving layup by Moody and a converted free throw. Iowa State took the lead with 2:33 to play when Schroll rebounded her own missed layup and put it back. Poppens put the Cyclones up for good with a fast break layup on an outstanding pass from Moody.
The Cyclones were down 50-37 with 10:27 to go in the half, Iowa State assembled an 11-1 run to reduce the deficit to 51-48 with eight minutes to play. Drake responded to get the lead back up to six multiple times before a three by Kyndal Clark put the Bulldogs back up 59-50 with 5:55 to go.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair as Drake and Iowa State both controlled play for portions of the first half. The first 20 minutes consisted of six lead changes and five times the scores were deadlocked. Iowa State took a late lead in the first half on a layup by Schroll to take a 23-22 lead with 3:17 to go but the Bulldogs would retake the advantage and go into the locker room with a 26-24 lead.
Iowa State shot a disappointing 5-of-20 from the field in the first half, including 0-of-5 from three. The Cyclones were better from the free throw line converting 14-of-18 attempts. The Cyclones were led by eight points from Moody followed by six from Schroll.
Christofferson posted five points and five boards in the first 20 minutes and Fallon Ellis provided four rebounds from off the bench.
The Bulldogs were led by an exceptional shooting effort from Stephanie Running. Running led the Bulldogs with 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Rachael Hackbarth posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Clark also posted 15 points.
The Cyclones are back in action Sunday when they play host to Northern Arizona. The game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. CST tipoff.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ben Simons scored 24 points and Drake handed Iowa State its first loss of the season, beating the visiting Cyclones 74-65 on Tuesday night.
Rayvonte Rice added 18 points for the Bulldogs (2-0), who snapped a two-game losing streak to Iowa State that included a 91-43 defeat in Ames a year ago.
The Cyclones trailed by as much as 10 with 2:27 left, but Chris Babb’s 3-pointer a minute later cut the deficit to 66-63.
Simons responded with a floater and a pair of free throws sandwiched around a missed 3 by Babb, pushing the Bulldogs ahead by seven with 22 seconds left.
Royce White had his second straight double-double, compiling 21 points and 14 rebounds, to lead Iowa State (1-1).
Iowa State trailed by single digits to open the second half and it took nearly eight minutes for the Cyclones to grab the lead. Chris Babb’s pull-up 3-point shot put Iowa State up 44-43 with 12:26 left, drawing loud cheers from the sizable contingent of Cyclones fans who made the 35-mile trip to Des Moines.
But a game that had lacked flow from both sides suddenly found some, primarily from the Bulldogs.
Rayvonte Rice, who spent considerable time on the bench with three fouls, came back with seven straight points to put the Bulldogs up 56-50. Simons’s fourth 3-pointer of the night made it 59-52 with 5:27 left, and Karl Madison’s 3-point play and layup put Drake’s lead at 64-56 with just 2:43 left.
Babb and Tyrus McGee each added 10 points for the Cyclones, who shot just 36.8 percent from the field.
