The 24-year-old right-hander was added to the rotation after Chris Carpenter went on the disabled list with a shoulder problem this spring. Corey Hart had a solo homer in the fifth for Milwaukee after hitting a pair of home runs Saturday. Next up for the Red Birds, is a trip to Cincinnati, to take on the Reds. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The 2012 U.S. Olympic team wrestling trials are two weeks away but there’s already interest in bringing the event back to Iowa City in 2016.  Josh Schamberger, president of the Iowa City-Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau, says there is “a real good chance” USA Wrestling will want Iowa City to host the event again. He told the Iowa City Press-Citizen that there is a bid process for the event but a likely sellout for the 2012 event is promising for the future.  Schamberger says more than 11,000 tickets have been sold for this year’s trials, set for April 21-22 at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The trial will determine who’ll wrestle for the United States in the London Olympics.

News

April 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs has gotten $1 million in federal aid for flood repairs and expects to receive another $4 million to $5 million by month’s end. Finance director Art Hill said that the city is pleased with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s response to aid requests. He says the reimbursement process is moving better and faster than expected. Council Bluffs spent $19.5 million to fight the rising Missouri River for several months last year. Hill says he expects FEMA to provide $14 million in aid, with $1.8 million coming from the state. Most of that should be paid by the end of June. FEMA has denied a request for $750,000. Hill says the city won’t appeal, so Council Bluff’s total flood costs should be about $3.6 million.

Minor injuries result from rollover accident Sunday in Montgomery County

News

April 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Two rural Stanton teens suffered non-life threatening injuries during a rollover accident early Sunday morning, northeast of Stanton. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened at around 12:20-a.m., on 200th Street, near P Avenue. Officials say a 1995 Mercury Sable driven by 17-year old Austin Becthold, was traveling east on 200th when Becthold swerved to avoid hitting a deer. The car crossed the center line of the road, hit an abutment in the road ditch, and became airborne.

The vehicle hit the ground and rolled over before coming to rest on its wheels. Becthold, and a passenger in the car, 13-year old Alex Becthold, were transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. No citations were issued. The car sustained an estimated $3000 damage.

Iowa lawmakers say education overhaul unlikely

News

April 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad and Iowa lawmakers have invested plenty of time on proposed reforms to Iowa’s public schools, but it looks like big changes to the education system are unlikely this session. Branstad initially offered a number of proposals, including linking teacher pay to performance in the classroom, requiring potential teachers to meet grade point standards before they could seek education training and holding students back if they didn’t meet reading benchmarks. After complaints from teacher groups and others, Branstad delayed the proposed salary changes, and now it appears that many of his other proposals will fall by the wayside due to disagreements with Senate Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal notes the Legislature likely will approve plans to increase spending on early elementary programs.
