(Radio Iowa) — UC-Irvine scored nine runs in the fifth inning to put the game away as the 18th ranked Anteaters beat Iowa 15-4, Sunday, to salvage the final game of their three game series. It was Iowa’s sixth straight series win.

(That’s Iowa coach Rick Heller) It was the third straight series for the Hawkeyes in which they were unable to close out a three game sweep.

At 29-17 the Hawkeyes are considered an NCAA bubble team. They return to action Friday by opening a Big Ten series at home against Michigan State.

Nicholas Castellanos started the 10th with an infield single off Ian Kennedy, and after Miguel Cabrera popped out, Niko Goodrum reached on another infield hit. Ronny Rodriguez struck out, and then Dixon hit a 1-2 curveball over the fence in right-center field for his first career walkoff homer.

VENICE, Ill. (AP) — A teen sports standout featured in a Sports Illustrated article about young athletes who would rule the future of sports has been fatally shot. CHICAGO (AP) — Javier Baez led off the eighth inning with a tiebreaking homer, and the surging Chicago Cubs wiped out a four-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5. Baez drove a 2-2 pitch from John Brebbia (1-1) to right for his 11th homer, sending the Cubs to their season-high sixth straight win.

DETROIT (AP) — Alex Gordon homered as part of a four-run first inning, and the Kansas City Royals routed the Detroit Tigers 15-3. The Royals chased Detroit right-hander Tyson Ross in the second inning and scored the game’s first seven runs. Kelvin Gutierrez had four hits and a stolen base for Kansas City in his eighth major league game.

CHICAGO (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have activated veteran reliever Luke Gregerson from the 10-day injured list after he missed the first five weeks because of a right shoulder impingement. The 34-year-old right-hander has not pitched in a major league game since July 25. He missed the start of last season because of a hamstring injury and struggled through 17 appearances, posting a 7.11 ERA, before being shut down because of the shoulder problem.

Baez hits tiebreaking HR in 8th, Cubs beat Cardinals 6-5

CHICAGO (AP) — Taylor Davis got the comeback started with a grand slam in the fourth inning. Javier Baez finished it with a go-ahead homer in the eighth.
Just like that, the surging Cubs are in position to grab the NL Central lead.
Baez led off the eighth inning with a tiebreaking drive, and Chicago wiped out a four-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 on Saturday.

Baez drove a 2-2 pitch from John Brebbia (1-1) the opposite way to right for his 11th homer , sending the Cubs to their season-high sixth straight win. Fans chanted “Javy! Javy!” as he came out for a curtain call.

Davis hit a tying grand slam in the fourth against Michael Wacha for his first career homer, after Kyle Schwarber was intentionally walked to load the bases. Brandon Kintzler (1-0) worked a scoreless eighth. Pedro Strop retired all three batters in the ninth for his fourth save in five chances as the Cubs cut St. Louis’ lead in the NL Central to a half-game despite a shaky start by Yu Darvish. They’re also eyeing a potential weekend sweep of their rivals.

The Cubs sure have turned things around after a 2-7 start. Baez coming through in a big moment is nothing new. But for Davis, this was different. Recalled from Triple-A Iowa three weeks ago, he became the first Cubs player to hit a grand slam for his first career homer since pitcher Kevin Tapani at Atlanta on July 20, 1998. He came into the game with five hits in 23 at-bats since debuting with Chicago in 2017.

UP NEXT – Cardinals: RHP Adam Wainwright (3-2, 3.73 ERA) looks to win his third straight start. He held Washington to two runs in a season-high 6 1/3 innings on Tuesday.

  14. Humboldt 324

Atlantic Head Coach Ed Den Beste: “This was a loaded tournament today in Carroll. Two teams were on their home course and Spencer, Humbolt, and Spirit Lake were there. We had to play one of our best rounds to win today and we didn’t but had a pretty good team score.
Good to see Matt continue to play well and place in the top 5 today. We was 3 over on front and 2 over on back. Cyle struggled with the putter today. He hit well but couldn’t get it going today. Braden had a tough start then was even on the back through 13 but couldn’t keep it going. Tate played his best round today. He had two doubles and a triple but also had 9 pars. We needed his score today and he came through after a tough start. Drey was playing well but struggled with some short shots. Garret had a tough front but came back on the back to keep it below 100. I know we can shoot better than this and will need to at conference.”

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas community college has released a summary of its internal review into the heatstroke death last year of a football player who collapsed after the first day of practice. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz and his wife have won another round in a neighborhood fight. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that a judge’s ruling issued Wednesday affirms the Ferentzes do not owe neighbors around $9,600 for road maintenance and don’t have to remove landscaping that affords them privacy from intrusive football fans.
