ELIZABETH “BETTY” SLAYTON, 83, of Casey, died Sat., April 14th, at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. Funeral services for BETTY SLAYTON will be held 2-p.m. Wed., April 18th, at the Casey United Methodist Church. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home  has the arrangements.

Visitation is at the Casey United Methodist Church on Tue., April 17th, from 6-9pm.

Burial will be in the Dalmanutha Cemetery.

BETTY SLAYTON is survived by:

Her husband – Donald Slayton, of Casey.

Her daughter – Carolyn Clemens, of Olathe, KS.

Her sons – David Slayton, of Urbandale, & Robert Slayton, of Casey.

Her brother – Keith Caltrider, of Casey.

BYRON DWIGHT JENSEN, 78, of Harlan, died Fri., April 13th, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. Funeral services for BYRON JENSEN will be held 11-a.m. Sat., April 21st, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 6-8pm Fri., April 20th, with a Prayer service at 7-pm. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Saturday, one-hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the Astor Cemetery at Defiance.

BYRON JENSEN is survived by:

His brothers – Lowel (Shirley) Jensen, of Crawfordsville, IN & Ronadl (Bev) Jensen, of Harlan.

His sister – Mary Stangl, of Marshalltown.

A Special Friend – Shirley Baldwin, of Harlan.

Trespassing arrest in Montgomery County

A Stanton man was arrested Sunday afternoon on a Trepassing charge. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says 31-year old Joshua Edward Mastin was taken into custody at around 3:40-p.m. Mastin was being held Sunday in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond, pending an appearance before the magistrate.

Rally squirrel part of championship ring design

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The rally squirrel has moved on from T-shirts and stuffed animals. The World Series championship rings the St. Louis Cardinals received over the weekend pay homage to the critter that served as a good luck charm last fall. A tiny squirrel appears below the Cardinals logo and just above the player’s number inside a home plate with bats crossed. The Cardinals won two straight to upset the Phillies in the division series after a squirrel scampered across home plate as Skip Schumaker batted against Roy Oswalt.

Corps reduces releases at Gavins Point after rains

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reducing the amount of water released into the Missouri River following heavy rains this weekend in Nebraska and Iowa. The corps says that releases from the Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, South Dakota were lowered Sunday from 28,000 cubic feet per second to 26,000 and will be lowered Monday to 22,000. Similar reductions are under way at other upstream reservoirs. The corps’ Jody Farhat says the reductions are needed to prevent flooding along the Missouri River in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. The river is expected to temporarily fall below the navigation target of 31,000 cubic feet per second in Sioux City.

THURMAN, Iowa (AP) — One resident says it looks “like World War Three” in Thurman following a tornado that damaged at least 75 percent of homes in the small town. Thurman Mayor Rod Umphreys says city officials sounded the tornado sirens seven minutes before the twister packing 135 mile-per-hour winds swept through town Saturday night. He says no one was killed.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governor Terry Branstad has issued an emergency proclamation for two southwest Iowa counties in the wake of Saturday’s severe storms. The declaration allows state resources to be used to help communities in Fremont and Union counties recover. State officials say a hospital suffered roof damage and had its windows blown out in the Union County town of Creston. Governor Branstad reviewed the damage yesterday afternoon.

HICKMAN, Iowa (AP) — One man has died after a car struck a utility pole in Hickman. Des Moines police, responding to a report of downed power lines, found the crash about 2:20 a.m. yesterday. Police say one man was pronounced dead at the scene and two others were taken to hospitals.

KRIS SOTHMAN, 48, of Cumberland, died Sat., April 14th, at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Funeral services for KRIS SOTHMAN will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., April 18th, at the Cumberland Community building in Cumberland. Steen Funeral Home in Massena has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 3-8pm Tue., April 17th, with the family greeting friends from 6-8pm. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Kris Sothman Memorial Fund to be established by the family.

Burial will be in the Union Township Cemetery, in Cumberland.
