Sheriff’s officials in Montgomery County say a Glenwood man was cited for Failure to Yield, following a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon, about 4-miles north of Villisca. Authorities say a 1995 Toyota Camry driven by 49-year old Bruce Fitzwater, of Villisca, was traveling north on Highway 71, when a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am driven by 24-year old Tyler Wolfe, of Glenwood, exited westbound Highway 34 and didn’t see Fitzwater’s car. Wolfe attempted to turn south onto Highway 71 from the stop sign, when his vehicle pulled into the Toyota’s path.

The accident happened at around 3:35-p.m.  Damage from the incident amounted to $3,200. No injuries were reported.

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Jackie Carmichael had 19 points and 10 rebounds as Illinois State withstood Northern Iowa’s late 12-0 run and prevailed 65-61 in a Missouri Valley opener Thursday night. Jon Ekey also had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Redbirds (9-3), who won their fourth straight. Nic Moore added 13 points and Anthony Cousin 11. Anthony James led the Panthers (10-3) with 21 points but shot only 9 of 25. Chip Rank added 11 for Northern Iowa, which has lost two in a row. Carmichael and Ekey scored six points apiece as Illinois State opened the second half with a 12-2 run for a 40-30 edge with 14:35 to go. Moore’s 3-pointer pushed the lead to 59-46 with 5:57 left.  Northern Iowa came back furiously, running off 12 straight points to get within 59-58 with 1:56 left. But Cousin hit six straight free throws to help seal it.

Red Cross reflects on busy year in western Iowa

News

December 29th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

A very busy year is drawing to a close for the American Red Cross chapter that covers western Iowa and eastern Nebraska. Agency spokeswoman Danelle Schlegelmilch says they were on their toes all through 2011. “We responded to over 400 disasters in our area and we also sent 200 local volunteers out throughout the country to help out with the 137 big disasters that we had,” Schlegelmilch says. “Tornadoes, flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes and a little bit of everything under the sun this year.” She says by far, the largest and longest disaster they had to deal with was the four-month Missouri River flood which socked the region.

“That really did hit us hard,” Schlegelmilch says. “We had 11 shelters open. We served over 23,000 meals and snacks and gave out 13,000 clean-up kits and clean-up items so it definitely kept us busy this summer.” The Red Cross provided nearly 300 people with overnight lodging at the shelters during the flood. Also during the year, Schlegelmilch says they responded to several tornadoes that plowed through neighborhoods and towns.

“We had volunteers respond to Mapleton, Iowa, Alabama, Arkansas, pretty much all over the South wherever those tornados hit, we had local volunteers who stepped up and put on their Red Cross vests and went out and served,” she says. “We really want to thank everyone for all of their hard work and dedication this year.” Schlegelmilch says the region is very fortunate so many people volunteer their time to those needing assistance. The Omaha-based chapter has more than one-thousand active volunteers.

Ron Paul in Atlantic: addresses the economy & U-S presence overseas

News

December 29th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

Republican Presidential contender Ron Paul today (Thursday) called for a full audit of the Federal Reserve system as part of his plan to overhaul the U-S economy and reduce Federal Government spending by $1-Trillion during his first year in office. Speaking before an overflow crowd in Atlantic at the Cass County Community Center, the Congressman from Texas also said a new monetary system is needed in this country.

Ron Paul (R) - TX speaks at the Cass County Community Center

He says there is no oversight of the Fed. Congress, according to Paul can spend Trillions of dollars and hundreds of millions, but the Fed spent $15-trillion on the bank and mortgage company bailouts without any oversight by Congress. That errant spending, he says, is what contributed to the current financial crisis, and why he wants an audit of the Fed Reserve. Paul said one of the ways we could reduce spending is by eliminating the Education Department. Another, is reducing the role our military plays overseas. He says he would start by cutting spending overseas first, which can be accomplished by changing foreign policy.

His policy would include stepping back from being the world’s policeman, and nation building. The money that would be saved by reducing those roles, he says, would allow a strengthening of our country’s defense at home. He says he would bring all of our troops home, from wherever they may be. He says he sees no purpose for troops to be maintained overseas, when they could be here at home and spending money here. He said also, there needs to be changes in the tax code to bring U-S companies who have moved their operations overseas, back to America.

That would also include an elimination of the inheritance tax. Paul said he would protect Social Security however, and keep the checks coming to those who need it most, such as the elderly and poor who are dependent on it for medical care. Paul spoke for about 45-minutes before answering a few questions, and moving on to Council Bluffs.

Sooners and Hawkeyes faces off in Insight Bowl

Sports

December 29th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — A season of expectations didn’t turn out quite the way Oklahoma planned. The Sooners opened the season No. 1 and had hopes of winning a second national title under coach Bob Stoops. Those aspirations fizzled with two losses in the final three games, dropping Oklahoma (9-3) into Friday night’s Insight Bowl against Iowa. Disappointed to miss out on a BCS bowl, the Sooners still would like to end the season strong in what could be the final game for quarterback Landry Jones, who’s weighing whether to leave for the NFL next season. Iowa (7-5) will be without leading rusher Marcus Coker due to a suspension but doesn’t figure to be a walkover after knocking off Missouri in last year’s Insight Bowl.

Pinstripe Bowl Preview Capsule

Iowa State (6-6) vs. Rutgers (8-4), 3:20 p.m. (ESPN)

Line: Rutgers by 2.

Series record: First meeting.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

The Cyclones try to finish with a winning record, and the fourth bowl victory in program history. The first three have all come since 2000. Coach Paul Rhoads just signed a new 10-year contract extension and another victory would keep the mood positive heading into the offseason. Rutgers is trying to reach nine victories for the third time since coach Greg Schiano took over in 2001 and win its fifth straight bowl. The Scarlet Knights had made five straight postseason appearances before going 4-8 last year.

KEY MATCHUP

Rutgers defensive front seven vs. Iowa State’s offensive line. Scarlet Knights are quick and relatively light up front. Tackles Justin Francis and Scott Vallone are their biggest linemen at 275 pounds each. But Rutgers likes to blitz and ranked 17th in the nation in sacks (2.67 per game) and 16th in tackles for loss (7.25 per game). Anchored by All-Big 12 LT Kelechi Osemele, who checks in at 6-foot-6 and 347 pounds, the Cyclones’ line is one of the biggest Rutgers has faced this season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Iowa State: QB Jared Barnett. The redshirt freshman took over as the starter midway through the season. He ran for 435 yards and passed for 1,178, and led the Cyclones on a three-game winning streak that included a 37-31 double-overtime upset of Oklahoma State. LB A.J. Klein was co-defensive player of the year in the Big 12.

Rutgers: QBs Chas Dodds and Gary Nova. The job has been shuffled between the junior Dodds and the freshman Nova all season and the starter for the Pinstripe Bowl will be a game-time decision. Despite inconsistent play from the quarterbacks, WR Mohamed Sanu set a Big East record with 109 catches.

FACTS & FIGURES

Rutgers KR Jeremy Deering averages 31.2 yards per kickoff return, second-best in Big East history … Rhoads and Schiano are both former defensive coordinators, and they have matched wits before. Rhoads was defensive coordinators for eight seasons at Pittsburgh before returning to his home state to take over the Cyclones in 2009. … Iowa State ranks 117th in the nation in turnovers committed with 32. Rutgers ranks sixth in the country in takeaways with 31.

IA DNR says Confinement Manure Applicators should attend training before March 1st

Ag/Outdoor

December 29th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES – Required annual training starts Jan. 17 and concludes on Feb. 29 for confinement site manure applicators at many county Iowa State University Extension offices. Seven dry manure classes will also be held.  “Confinement site applicators are required to attend annual training, even though their certificates are good for three years,” said Jeff Prier, DNR coordinator of the program. “It’s also a good reminder of new and existing rules and other information pertinent to applicators and producers.”

Certificates expire on Dec. 31. To avoid late fees, certification renewal must be submitted to DNR no later than March 1. Applicators whose certificates are expiring must complete the training, and submit forms and fees. Confinement site applicators must attend two hours of training each year of the three year certification. A $25 continuing education fee is charged and pre-registration is required. Prier said even those who received initial certification the fall of 2011 must complete training in 2012. Applicators can find contacts for registration and a list of counties where the training is available at www.agronext.iastate.edu/immag/certification/confdates.html.

Those applicators who cannot attend a training session should contact their local Extension office to schedule time to watch a video. Extension offices may charge a $10 fee to show the video outside of a scheduled showing. Applicators may also take a 50‐question exam. Contact the DNR field office most convenient to you to make an appointment, by calling:
